Here's the question all casual players ask all serious players when a serious proposition like this comes up. Do you have any money?

Seriously.

Out of curiousity how old are you? If by young you mean high school aged, I would prioritize school first and you can always learn the game while you go to school and figure out a solid back up plan just in case. You just need to prioritize your time properly.

Nothing wrong with high aspirations though, no one gets there by accident. I think your best bet would be to move to an area which has a plethora of strong players, get lessons, play, network and get recognized and eventually someone will take notice and want to help you out.

thanks....

well maybe im not too young 27........i really just need a place to shoot so i can clock in and play....

Get a job at a pool hall....

you will get to see the good the bad and the ugly of it all. Make free table time a part of your wage compensation and watch, listen, learn, and play .... play.... play.

You can also learn more with the "search" tab on this website than you could ever comprehend, or be able to assimilate in a lifetime..... It may take a lifetime just to read it all

Good luck

Ahh, then I agree with Grindz. A bartender job in a pool hall seems to be the best option. Preferably one that sees a lot of competition go through there.

It's a great way to network.

Your request could be interpreted as:

"will a pool hall owner let me play pool forever for free and get me lessons for free too?"

What benefit do they get in return? 50% of winnings and free john scrubbing?

What's your level now? Who can vouch for your speed, integrity and drive?
What's your high run in each of the disciplines?

Bear your soul young man and maybe, just maybe, a genie will materialize...

Good luck!

Another thread. This is gettin weird. Look we all love the game. I don't wanna get locked in anyones cellar though.

speed....

actually thats all i want is just a place to shoot...it doesnt even have to be a pool hall just someones house...my main intent is to get to the table...my speed is solid...im one of the best in my area...but i could be a real champion...i think the only difference between me and the pros..is table time...i just need that...... and my integrity.....i care about pool so much... i have 120 dvds...i shoot as much as i can...i think about it all the time...i just wanna play and need a place to start....any decent place with a table that i can shoot endless pool on is good for me...

My friend I'm going to point out the obvious to you in an obvious way because I think you need it spelled out for you like that. You need to make a choice. Either choose to live a life of near minimum wage pay or do something fruitful and actually give yourself options in life.

Here's are some examples of the options making a good salary allows you to make.

ribs or ribeye?

2 1-Liter steins or 1 2-Liter boot?

prenup or roll the dice?

nice home room stocked with beer or musky home room stocked with jobless guy who drinks your beer and pays no rent?

the answer is no......i might be able to get some......
ill go broke for this game....

With a statement like that then your already there

On a more serious not i agree with everybody else. It seems like the bug bite you a little later than most champions but thats not a bad thing. If pool is your entire life than you really dont have a life (watch the twlight zone episode "Game of Pool"). Im not saying dont follow your dreams but be realistic about them. Im willing to bet everybody on here has a job that they go to day in and day out with the occassionly weekend tournament which is great and ideal.

Job wise I would go with the bartender in a pool hall or pool lounge idea. FREE pool when your not working (i use to work at hard times) or a regular pool hall. If the owner lets you open up his spot im sure he wouldnt mind letting you play afterhours or early in the moring. One place i work i had the keys but i wasnt allowed to bring anybody in when the place wsnt open. But i spent 10-15 hours a day playing pool for almost a year.

Something to think about

I think there are laws to protect you from people
locking you in their basement.
Well at least I hope there are.

Why not just get a job in a pool room?

All the best, but I don't think it's a good idea to ask
strangers to lock you up.

If this is what you really want to do then you need to find a champion to work with. Champions breed champions.

There are two things you need to focus on, being rock solid in your fundamentals and being rock solid in your demeanor. Neils Feijen got there through intense drills and then coaching by Bert Kinister.

Learning to fade the heat and play your best under pressure is something that you will not get from DVDs. You have to get in the box in tournament play and perhaps action.

The jury is out on whether action improves or hurts your game. I personally think that it hurts your game over the long run if it's done in the quasi-hustling manner. If, when you match up you are trying to get the nuts all the time and you play around with people to disguise your speed then you are not doing yourself any favors for the time when you need to truly step up against a monster player.

Players like Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann are living proof that one can become a world champion without gambling.

The Filipinos on the other hand stay sharp because of gambling. But they aren't looking to hustle. Instead they are matched up on very good knowledge of their relative skill levels and each match is then a close contest of skill.

Because the top players in the Philippines all stay in the same area it's easy for them to match up for relatively low stakes and pride and pecking order.

This is unfortunately not available to you as a player in the USA. Not only because of the geographical limitations but also because of the cultural differences. Today's top players in the USA have cut their teeth on the hustling route and as such they are at a slight disadvantage when it comes to the pure guts match up with other champions in my opinion.

So, to me I would advise you to find someone like Grady Matthews, or some old champion who is willing to take you on as an apprentice. Grady advertised here a few years ago that he was willing to do this if anyone was willing and it never panned out.

Good luck in what you choose. One thing that I have noticed among the top players is that while they have ups and downs financially they, for the most part, enjoy the freedom that comes with being the modern equivalent of the free-ranging gunslinger.

I got 2 more words for you:

Here's a silly suggestion; why not buy your own Pool table?

Yes, you need to do it for yourself.

Its a big world out there and I am sorry to say that in the real World, desire plays a small role in success.
