Play with accomplished players. Take your lumps and learn. Try leaving opp close or frozen to rail. It's easier than it sounds. Practice slow rolling your ball and leaving it deep in the hole. Just like golf it's better to leave one hanging than to make it. They can't get it out cause it's hanging so deep. If they are smart they will make your ball but you should also make your opp ball if they leave one hanging. This will keep them from getting shape on a second ball. Books and tapes are fine, but you also need to put in time at the table. It's a journey!

I watched a couple really good players yesterday for a couple hours at Kolbys. I was amazed at the balls that were DEEP into the pocket that they were able to kick out!!

Its a good room, I might be there later today for the 8 and under tournament. Do you have a rating?

If you can aquire the 2 books...(someone on here will have the exact title) Winning one-pocket, and Shots and strategies...its 2 leather bound books by the greats...warning they are not going to be cheap but they are worth every penny....secondly, accu-stats video productions has hundreds of great matches, commentated by great players...typically I would stay away from the "one of" videos that individual players put out....on the flip side, the player review one-pocket matches help you to get in the head of the players and their individual thought process...

I think for an absolute beginner, Kohler's One-Pocket is very good starter. I would quickly however go to one pocket matches on DVD from Accustats and TAR.

jack koehler book upscale one pocket is a great beginner book
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0962289035/azbilliardscom
eddie robin books mentioned above winning one pocket and shots moves and strategies considered the best but i think someone with some experience would get more out of them
definitely a must have if you are serious about one pocket
lennys production of power one pocket by scott frost has a lot of good info and moves
http://ontherailtv.com/content/scott-frost-dvd
accusts dvds with the commentary is also a great way to learn
also as mewntioned find someone to play who knows the game to help you out

Over the last year I've bought and watched many one pocket DVD's:

Instructional's:
Scott Frosts Power One Pocket
Gabe Owen's One Pocket my way
Billy Incarndona's Instructional DVD
Banking with the Beard DVDs (not 1P, but helpful all the same)

Action matches from Lenny:
Frost vs Efren
Frost vs Joyner
+ various tournament matches from his streams

All the Grady Matthew DVDs.... Think five of them were useful for 1P one way or another

Accustats:
10 or 11 Derby City Finals
10 or so matches suggested by the fine folks over at onepocket.org

Books:
The Koehler books

Been putting of buying Winning One Pocket & SoS, but they are next on my hit list.

We had a baby last year and my playing time took a big hit. While these books and DVD's have kept my mental game sharp during that time, they will never replace playing one pocket against a guy that knows what he doing. Nothing will ever replace focused table time.

If your interested in any of the DVDs above let me know, they can be had cheaper than what it would cost to get them directly. All my stuff is original and still mint.

One pocket is a game where you really need to play it to learn, next best way is to watch as much good players videos /youtube as possible

But you must master 9 ball first, then move to one pocket.

Here is something you might like.
http://www.amazon.ca/Billiards-Official-Rules-Records-Book/dp/1558211896

I have an earlier copy. The price is certainly right. It has the rules for the most popular games as well as every other billiard game you can think of. Diagrams as well.

For a beginner like myself, I think this book is right up your alley.

The rules for 14:1 and one pocket are concise and clear and good for anyone starting off until you want to delve into them deeper.

Why??? Learning some Straight Pool would be much better than 9 ball.

i agree also banks
the only benefit to 9 ball is learning to kick
most of the long distance running
patterns wont be used much in one pocket
but to play 1p well you need to have skills from all games

All these books and DVDs are great but you need to learn how to execute the shots prior to "learning" the shots....

I would recommend Pro Skill Drills volume 6 which was made especially for developing your one pocket shots. What is the use in trying a shot or seeing a shot when you need to use a stroke or skill set not properly trained in other games? One pocket has many types of shots that you will never learn to use by playing other games.

I recommended the DVD to an up and coming player about 6 months ago. He was getting into one pocket and didn't know where to start except to play other people. As soon as he got the DVD and started practicing the drills, his game jumped up about 3-4 balls in about 2 months..maybe more. Really.

This is a plug for my product, but also, I really love the game and hope I can do something to help people get better...
