Looking for advice on a cue/shaft to buy for a beginner

I just recently started playing frequently and bought my own table. I really do not know a whole lot about different sticks/cues and was wondering where good places to buy them at are and what kinds would be good for a beginner level that are around 50-100 dollars total.

If you're in a town big enough for decent size pool halls you can find plenty of cues in the price range. Like randyg says, Maple Shafts. Stay away from composites and aluminum.

If you look hard enough and can stay away from the glitter you might find a really nice cue. Look for all wood with absolutely nothing fancy. Now if you go with what looks like a House Cue but with a joint (Sneaky Peat style), be sure there's a small ring at the joint. It will help prevent damage there. This is the cheapest design but believe me the prices are sometimes shocking depending on the maker.

I will add to what 3andstop said...don't forget to check the "for sale" forum here. You can often find very inexpensive used cues, with a lot of life left in them.

For the money I feel these are good cues ...

edit ... couldn't find it at first, I saw this one in person and hit a few balls with it, surprisingly good feel for an economy cue IMO.

Also, look at the Action Cue line ...

Lucasi, McDermott, Joss are good cues for a low-budget and you will have some good years with em for you. No risk to make a mistake here.

have fun and welcome to the pool-world:)

I love my players sneaky pete. For less than $100, you can get one of these, a tip upgrade (I use a kamui black soft) and a case.

This cue even has a weight bolt that can be replaced if you want to change the weight of your cue. Ozone doesn't list the weight bolts on their site, but they were nice enough to send me a couple after I spoke with them on the phone...excellent customer service!

I recently bought a used predator ikon1 with Z2 shaft. It seems that people are recommending normal cue for picking up the basic before advancing.

I played randomly for 2 years and I'm gonna look for an instructor to check on my fundamentals and bring my game to another level.

Is it ok for me to use my new cue or sell it and get something else ? :embarrassed2:
