Looking to have a cue built, but want a full splice venner blank. Show me what you guys have for sale.
Before you order or buy a blank, I would caution you to find yourself a maker(s) that will agree to complete a customer supplied blank. There are many makers who would really rather not complete a customer supplied blank, just in case there are problems.
If you decide to go with a either a Prather or Davis blank, be aware that both of these blank makers can also do a very nice job of completing that blank for you. Also, as Ken stated, Jerry -R- is doing a limited run of veneered full splice cues from blanks he is crafting himself, and they are looking very nice indeed. Also, Travis from Blackcreek does a nice full splice cue. And, Ed Prewitt is doing a stellar full splice these days...but he is outta my league currently.
I am currently having my 2nd blank completed and can tell you from experience, you're not gonna save much, if any money this way. I did not go this route because of any savings, but rather it allowed me the chance to get some really nice woods in a veneered wrapless full splice...which is all I play with or currently collect.
A Prather blank with a straight grained maple nose and more common exotic will run you $240...if you want to upgrade to a BEM or curly maple nose, add $40...if you want a nice figured not-so-common exotic, add $40 more. Both of my blanks were in the $320 range, but both turned out very, very nice.
It is my understanding that the Davis blanks start at $350 and go up from there. Mr Davis also does two types of full splice blank...a Burton Spain splice which is generally meant to have a wrap installed over it, and then your more 'traditional' full length full splice, which can be left wrapless.
You can figure that a maker is gonna charge anywhere from roughly $500 and up to complete the blank. You also want to make sure that the maker is going to take their time to turn the blank slowly down, as well as keeping the points centered and even.
There is a lot more to consider going this route, but with the right blank and right maker, the results can be quite satisfying.
