Looking for info on a case...

I hope we have all seen "The Hustler" by now; probably most of us own a copy (or two) as well.

Anyway, the case that 'Fast Eddie' uses in the movie- I think it was either suede or Velvet covered (hard to tell in B&W) which had a woven (leather?) handle. He puts it up on the shelf when he goes into Ames the first time looking for a game with Fats.

Anyone know more about this particular case?

Was it a production case?
If not, who made it?
Are they available?
If not, anyone have any GOOD photos of this case so that it might be reproduced?

I always liked it. I have made a few cases of wood for myself, but would like to have one like that if possible.

Thanks in advance to everyone and happy new year!

dam and you know i just found out about a month ago or so by accident who made that case....and now i can't remember the friggin name....

ill tell you one interesting fact about the movie....the term Doom that Vince says about the buska in the case....that was the inspiration for the name of the Doom video game franchise.

The case was made from the A.E. Schmidt company. The case is NOT a brunswick like most folks think.

It is very rare to find one in good condition. Contact Chris (bogey54311). He is the first person off the top of my head to go to if your looking for one.

Cool info so far guys!

If A. E. Schmidt made it, do you think they might have designs so it could be reproduced?

Not looking for a good original, but a rough one might be in my price range, or a reproduction of it is good enough for me as well.

I'll send a PM to Chris and see what assistance he can give.

I sent a PM to Chris and also contacted A.E. Schmidt directly to see if they have any interest in producing these again.

I assume other members would like to have one as well, if they could.:)

Great detail pictures there.

I think John may be out of my price range, but I guess I can drop him a line...

Would love to have one; I think it is a cool case that you don't see very often any more. Like a Fellini (for rarity now), but different.

I received an e-mail reply from Kurt Schmidt at A.E. Schmidt co. which I have pasted below:

"It is not a case that we could have built. We never really had any capacity to build cue cases of any kind. The shape of the case is exactly like a Brunswick esquire case. But the embossing on it does not appear to be something that they would have done. Other than that, I have no idea where the cue case originally came from. I have sent the pictures out to one of our managers at another store. Larry has been in this industry for around 50 years and may remember something that I don’t’

Kurt"

So, I guess we'll see what Larry hasto say now.

Does anyone have pictures of a Brunswick Esquire case by chance? I'd like to compare it to the A.E. Schmidt case photos I have collected.

Myth or not, hopefully we can get to the bottom of this!

Still no word (yet) from John Barton... I'm a bit scared what the price will be...

More info from Kurt Schmidt:

"oddly enough, one of my retired cue makers called me right after I sent you an e-mail today. He started working for us in 1960---he had no recollection of ever making any cue cases. My only thought was, That this was a esquire cue case, and possibly we or someone else wrapped it in the hand tooled stuff."

So the mystery continues...

A.E Schmidt sold all sorts of things that they did not personally produce. Including goods made by Viking, Adam, Huebler, Brunswick....Etc...
The case is in fact the same one as seen in the hustler. there are enough clear shots of it to see exactly what it looks like. I'm quite sure it was made by Brunswick.

This seems to be the case, as indicated by Kurt's second e-mail to me.

I still have not heard anything from John about making a replica...

Assuming he is willing/able to do them, would anyone else be interested in a "Hustler commemorative" cue case from John Barton? Maybe with additional interest, he can make several at once and get us a slightly lower cost as opposed to having just one case made for me.

Anyone?

I bet John will make you one. Jim Murnak makes a similar one and I have made a few that are sort of like it also. I like the looks of them. Heres a couple pictures one I made.

Great looking Case my Friend ... please send me a price for a case like that mate.

Thanks
Berny

That is a fantastic looking bit of work there!

Can you please show the inside as well?

And, as Berny said: Please PM me with a price, but with the less-elaborate embossing of the original style listed further up. I am not crazy about all that leather work, although I do appreciate the work that goes into it.

Great looking case. I have always liked Fast Eddie's case as well. I had matcase make me a 2x2 that is very similar, but has a shoulder strap as well. It is a fantastic case when i just need a cue and a break cue.

My current favorite is the Whitten 1X2- clean and simple with excellent protection.

I think the old case is classy. I'd like to have one, as long as I can afford it! The workmanship that goes into these cases is apparent for sure...:)

I agree, that old case that jayman posted is super classy, I'd love to own it. I'm sure that the one that metallicane spoke of that's made by matcase is a knock out as well, he makes some fantastic cases. I really wasn't trying to sell one I just thought that you might like to see it. I'm so far behind that the wait would be more than most people would consider. Here's a picture of the interior of one of them, it's just padded dividers no tubes. Also here's a picture of a plain one I made without the tooling. I'm glad you started the thread, all I'd ever seen before was the more plain version of the brunswick, the one jayman posted is much nicer.
