Looking for old sports illustrated magazines from the 60/70s with pool related articles. Even if you don't have them for sale but know of the issue, I will search.

It seems the 12/4/61 issue of SI has a write up on Johnston City.

What are some others?

Thanks,
Ian

I doubt they did more than 5(probably less) pool-related articles in the time-frame mentioned. I could be wrong but i like my odds. Its possible they did Mizerak related stuff when he did the MillerLite commercial.

Got me curious and i Googled "SportsIllustrated articles on billiards". They do exist. Not a lot but there's one about Lisciotti-Jennings, one about LilJohnMacias and few others. I wonder what LilJohn is doing now. That cat was NOT afraid to stack it high and play for it.

There was one about Irving Crane but I think it appeared in only certain distribution areas. That would have been about 1970.

Found this description: "Very popular 12/4/61 Sports Illustrated that has a 7 page feature on the 1st Johnston City, Illinois billiards/pool classic. The feature is titled "Hustler's Holiday in the Lion's Den" and mainly focuses on New York (Minnesota) Fats (see scan). This SI (front cover shows snow skiing) is in ExMt condition, with a label. This tournament was very popular for many years."

Well, this is the cover of the one you're looking for. :)

Tugboat Whaley -- LOL -- is the referee. What a name! Cue and cigar in careful balance, Daddy Warbucks lines up a shot.

Got a chuck on page 60: Now Boston Shorty (Larry Johnson, 32, Boston) is playing. Shorty is a short 5 feet 2 who gets sore when a hustler says he's "shorter than the cue stick." Says Johnson: "That's a lie, the cue stick is 58, 59 inches. I'm 62 inches."

A photographer is shooting pictures of the match. Boston Shorty stops the game and says he doesn't want his picture taken. The photographer wants to know how come. Shorty's backer climbs down from the gallery. "Shorty ain't played the West Coast yet," the backer says with a forced grin. "You understand, he's still got some live territory to cover. He don't want them to know who he is or what he looks like. You understand, don't you, man?"

My favorite Liljon photo of him directing traffic, getting his bets down, before Keith breaks on the Action Table at Super Billiards Expo.

Here's a couple of good ones - Dec. 16, 1974 issue (Rick Barry on the cover) with a long story about the Dayton tournament and the August 8, 1977 issue (Carlos Monzon, the boxer, on the cover) with a terrific story about Danny Diliberto.

Thanks Jay, Just ordered the Carlos Monzon issue.

Tom Fox wrote series of pool related articles for SI like "Hustlers' Holiday in the Lions' Den" Dec 4, '61. Then there was "Battle of the Hottest Sticks" mostly illustrations by Douglas Gorsline. Another Tom Fox was "You Don't Beat Wimpy at the Game He Loves."

Playboy had some good articles like "Shooting Out The Lights with Wimpy." There was another a few years later featuring Ronnie Allen which escapes me at the moment.

And then there was the mother of all cartoon histories of pool by the legendary Arnold Roth, SI Dec 14, '70. (The center spread posted below.)

James Morgan wrote another SI LL piece "Wimpy Tackles an ex-Tiger."

Patrick Jordan for SI wrote "A Clutch of Odd Birds" about pool hall regulars.

Time and Newsweek also did stories from time to time.
