Looking for photo of Martin Kaiman, aka Omaha Fats, Fat Marty

Tried to run down Diana Hoppe at the DCC last week but never hooked up. Anyone aware of any photos of this old coot? He actually helped me learn the game when I was a kid, and if I could get a poster-sized photo I'd like to frame it and hang it in my game room. Marty was a fixture in Denver rooms in his last years, but had hustled pool his whole life and was a regular in Johnston City.

Bump

Gonna give myself a bump and tell a quick Fat Marty story:

He and Minnesota Fats didn't like one another. They confronted eachother at the Jansco pool fests in Johnstown. Minnesota, who dressed expensively, chided Marty for his country bumpkin ways. Marty always dressed in rags.

He says to Marty: "Just this morning I was on the phone with Zsa Zsa Gabor." So Marty mulls this over and responds, "Well, I never knew the man, but if you played him, I'm sure you had the nuts."

What a character.

Marty was one of a kind. Simply outrageous!

Back in the early 70's Wide World of Sports and it's TV crew showed in Denver at Celebrity Lanes to tape Marty shooting a one handed spot shot.

We had all been in there all night playing and gambling and whatever and decided to hang around and watch the fiasco. After all, Marty was the "self-proclaimed" greatest Jack up player in the world.

About 9AM he comes strolling in wearing his typical pleated slacks, wing tiped shoes, and his white t-shirt, which was wrinkles up above his belly button. What a sight.

His t-shirt was obviously from the day before because there was a huge mustard stain right down the middle.

The TV crew showed up and finally some guy approached Marty and confronted him about his nasty shirt. Marty grumbled and had me drive him a few blocks away to a K-Mart where he ppurchase a brand spanking new,,,,white t-shirt.

We were driving back and he was going to change on the way. When he took that shirt off and raised those arms, I near passed out. OMG!

So we get back and Marty warms up and goes through his Fats impersonation and finnally is ready. He made the shot too,,,,,,,,on the 23rd try. It was just hilarious.

All in all, Old Marty wasn't a bad guy. He was a WW11 vet and had some injuries he never quite recovered from. He could though be quite entertaining.

I have a picture somewhere of him in Johnson City taking a huge bite out of a hot dog. If I can find it, I will get in touch and get it to you.

Thanks pal

I have a picture I can send if you PM your email address. Bob

I'm resurrecting this thread because I got a couple photos in the mail today from bobalouiecda.

They'll be framed tomorrow and added to my game room wall. Fat Marty was a special guy in my life.
I've added to bob's rep, and I suggest others do so as well. This is what makes this forum such a swell place.

On a side note, it's interesting that the photo credit notes that Marty was a tutor for the infamous Fast Larry. I'll be damned, but it makes sense. Both rebels, thoroughly.

There is a photo of Omaha shooting a one handed shot in Pool Wars. I just couldn't leave it out. He was one fascinating and VERY funny human being. Probably the only guy who could talk Fats to a draw. I saw them face off in Johnston City a couple of times, and nearly died from laughter.

Coincidentally I was just contacted today by Martin Kaiman's niece -- who is also looking for photos. Would you be willing to share the ones you come up with? Who knows, maybe you know his niece already, lol.

I sent her the only one I have, which is from an old Johnston City program.

PS your PM box is full...
