Looking online for house to fit 9'

Hey Guys-
Being an avid pool player I will eventually get a 9 footer in a future house. The problem is getting a house with a room big enough to fit it. Have any of you tried to search online for a house with a room that size? Were you successful? Or did you have to go through a real estate againt and have him/her go through their inventory to find one with that size room? I haven't had any luck with looking with their small list of search parameters. How did you go house shopping to fit a pool table?

OOPS" I think Not!!!

I have a house with a full basement. Problem was the poles. I had an engineer come in, $900, and tell me what to do to remove one of the poles. $250 worth of steel, my good buddy the welder and bingo. Done deal!!!

OH, I forgot to mention that I took the pole out first. The 6" X 10" steel beam barley flexed . No big deal.

I just plain got lucky UWPG. When I moved from the Chicago area back to Miss. in 99, my wife found the house we bought while i was still working in Chicago. She knew I wanted a GC4 and ROOM for it. It just happened the first house she looked at had a grand piano in the middle of what is now my game room. She bought the house without my ever seeing it. I'm like Don in that I trust my wife emphatically. Hey, after 35 years she knows what I like. Had 3 acres and a catfish pond too. She dun good.

We are in the same situation. Looking for a house, already been preapproved, and have few requirements in the house we will buy. A room big enough to hold a 9 ft with confort and a back yard big enough for the dogs...

I never tried going online, but I drove a couple of realtors crazy about 5 years ago with my requirement for the room to be a specific size with no obstructions and within a certain price range. It took 7 months, but we finally came upon one that worked out great. It ended up being in the basement but it was very level and I installed a P-tac heating and air conditioning unit which keeps the temperature and humidity perfect all year long. Unfortunately, in about a year or two I'm having a new home built in another state and am already looking at floor plan designs which you can get online from different builders in that particular city. If you have a house built, you can discuss that option with the builder(s) right up front or find their existing floor plans available on the internet. Otherwise, get a couple of realtors working for you on an ongoing basis with the room requirement and just be patient because it will take time.

Yeah I found a site that had floor plans of house building plans you could purchase for the architectural drawings which laid out room dimensions. And that did not have a 20x 18+ room went right out the window. Then its finding a small patch of land and loan. But that may be out of the proce range.

I don't think it would necessarily be out of the price range and might not be any worse than buying an existing home already on a parcel of land. You just have to talk to builders and negotiate with them. Let's say you're looking at a home with 2,300 sq. ft. (or whatever) you lay out a 20x18 room first and build everything else around it. You might have one less bedroom or the wife and kids might have to sleep in the attic, but who cares. It's still going to run the same because you buy on a sq. ft. basis anyway, probably somewhere between $50-$80 per sq. ft., although I don't know what that is in Canada. Go to various websites of specific builders in an area or city. Pull their names out of the yellow pages or business directory of the internet. Individually, they're more apt to put floor plans on their own site, but they can build you anything. For existing homes, you might want to look for basements that size. Mine is 25X19 but I could surely do it with a lot less, and will, in my new home because they don't build basements where I'm going.

If you build your own you should have no problem getting the plans modified.

If you buy existing some of the online realty sites list room sizes but not basement sizes. You do have basements in Bigfoot country don't you? You'll probably just have to lug a 25' tape measure around for about a year to find a basement that big with no obstructions.

Paul Mon, like Purdy, had to take out a pole to make room. I think he said he brought in a 20' W22 steel beam in thru his basement window :p

Another option for those in more rural areas with a bit of land would be an outbuilding or exterior garage of some kind, a little interior work and walla.

I'm looking at a house near me right now, it's in the city, anyway it has an outbuilding that the current owner is using as an office of some kind, it's got AC and power and is semi connected to the house by a covered patio.. I really want the house because it seems ideal, I have enough room for my wife and daughter and they can have the house to decorate how they see fit and the outbuilding is my game room/sanctuary, and since it's not in the main house it wouldn't be a big deal if I had a couple of buddies over and they wanted to smoke, drink, and get a little loud.

I wouldn't shop for a house with your #1 need being a room big enough for a 9 footer. That would be similar to shopping for a house with a big enough bedroom to hold your king sized bed and oversized furniture. It usually doesn't work because you have to sacrifice too many other important things. The room big enough for a table should be a WANT, not a NEED. House prices in Vancouver are higher than anywhere else in western Canada, so be careful out there. Location, good structure and a functional floorplan - in that order, should be your criteria. We canucks love our basements, so look there for your billiard room first. Removing a telepost in most cases is a snap, but have an engineer look at the home and make your offer conditional on being able to make the structural changes. If you want the table upstairs, then look for a plan thats easily renovated, ie., you can be creative and take a wall or two out to free up the room you need, or even add on to the existing house. Good luck, and yes, use a Realtor.

First off I am not from Vancouver, CA...but Vancouver, WA... :D

If I buy a house there WILL be a pool table put in there at some point, so might as well figure on busting a wall down or finding an alternative. But that makes me think about the possibilities of other ideas concerning space. Thanks.

I was having a house built when I came across a 9' Brunswick-Balke-Collander
around 100 years old for $1,800. The guy selling it was getting ready to go through a divorce and wanted to have some money in his secert stash. Had the builder add a 22'X24' room while he was building the house. Wife hated it. Still have the table, still have the house, don't have the wife. Plenty of room for the table and my three yellow labs.

Why not?

:D

When I was shopping for a house having room for at least a 7-footer was mandatory. Fortunately I found a house with an 8-footer in the basement already.

I respectfully submit that this is TERRIBLE advice! Unless you are married to a saint, your pool room will probably be the only room you have any input on anyway. The way I see it, if UW holds out for a house with a 9 footer, then at least he will have 1 thing in the house that is his (unless of course he would prefer the frilly powder room for company). Having a 9 footer in the basement is way cool, talk your wife into it, whatever it takes.

Oh, and another thing. What is more important than having a 9 foot table??
Air, maybe food and water. Are you sure you are in the right forum? This is the AZ billiardfanatic/zealot/hardcorepurist/losehalfyourpaycheckatthepoolhall forum. Believe me, your wife will find plenty of other things for you to sacrifice (unless of course you are not married, then nevermind). Two uninterrupted nights with Pamela Anderson/Ewa Laurance is a WANT, a 9 foot table is a NEED. Just my opinion.

It SHOULD make you think about the possibilities of other ideas concerning space...like putting a large, fully stocked L-shaped bar, stereo, and plasma TV in the next room. THAT'S a NEED also...listen you gotta get your priorities straight and if you're married, you can't become PW'd and give in to a sewing room/study/or family room. Your pool room will be your sanctuary and what's NEEDED to maintain male sanity, not to speak of improving and staying super sharp in your game. Just make sure there's a lanai or garden outside, that'll work.

I don't think you've taken your quest seriously enough because they're out there in abundance. Try this:

www.house-plans-guide.com/washington_house_plans.html

www.dreamhomesource.com

And if that's not enough for you, just google "house floor plans" and you'll get more websites than you can handle. And even though a room isn't exactly
20x18 but close, a builder can always move a wall and change the dimensions of an adjacent room to make it that. Now...get to work and get serious!
