DZ Bob Dzuricky made my first true custom. Stated build time would be 26-27 weeks. Build time was like 26. 5 weeks. Stopped counting e- mails at about sixty. Total communication and updates. A pro photographer, I was sent pics of every piece of build. My wrap less is on his completed page. Easy to find, it's the most unusual cue there. Originally the eight maple veneers in the handle were just un adorned. He said he thought ivory dots would look nice so I said how much more. He said it was not discussed so he threw them in!!! Flawless finish. Ask about his secret special shaft which he doesn't speak of in his website! Think he puts Kryptonite in it somehow. Went with the cue ball joint just because it's different. His website is an absolute education on cues. Check it out even if you don't use him.

My next cue is going to be Dzuricky. He`s website is the best and his pricing seems more than fair.

This is like going on a car forum and saying I want a car with 4 wheels.............what do you suggest? lol. What a plethora of responses, both good and bad. Why dont you go with a decent production cue out of the gate. Give yourself some time to hit some. See what type of hit and response you like at this point. If you been out a while...............it may have changed a bit. JS Good luck with your choice.

cue

For price and time id mention shurtz cues. Bob owen. He makes an extremely nice cue for the money, their priced under what the other guys charge for the same thing imo. His points and veneers are super sharp and his tapers are good. I had a cue made from someone else (i wont mention a name) and the taper was awful, shurtz tapered it and it plays a ton better now. On his website you can see the cues sold and some will show what they sold for. His wait time is reasonable also compared to most. Diveneys another thats great but im not sure on his wait time. U can call or email and ask wait times for what youd want and theyll give you a price. I agree with the post before thks also you may want to try a few out if possible as things may have changed a bit for you. If i had to do it over again id go with shurtz or diveney.

You can't go wrong with a BCM!

Bryan Mordt's wood selection is excellent, and all of his work is always very clean - points, rings, wraps, it's all sharp and neat.
And he's got something else you won't get with every cuemaker - good customer service.

Have a look: http://www.bcmcue.com/

He's also a member and frequent poster on these boards, so you could PM him or have a look at some of his older threads for examples of his work & character on AZ.

I think the wait time right now is about 4-6 months, give or take.
Would probably depend upon your cue's complexity too though, I guess.

While certainly not a new cuemaker, you may also wish to consider Jim Buss. I have an 8 pointer from him and I am very happy with the quality of the cue.

I am looking to have a cue made.

You will get more names here than the white pages in a phone book.

There are many great cue makers. Without listening to a lot of opinions first, it would be more important on what style of cue you want.

If time is of a concern you could always buy a Davis blank and have it finished by your cue maker of choice. Not sure if he does 8 pointers. Just another suggestions to add to your list.

I would like to toss in Paul Sumrall S&S cues as one to call. Good luck with your quest and welcome back to the great game of Pool.

I would suggest Troy Downey. He is an established yet underrated cue maker, and builds a nice playing cue. Gabe Owen was playing with a Downey when he won the U.S. Open, if that tells you anything.

Leon Sly!

Leon Sly, hands down. If you want a well made cue with great playability-go with him. He can build anything you want and you will get it rather quickly. His quality, craftsmanship, and finish are second to none. There are other good makers out there, no doubt. I think for the money, he is tough to beat. You get a a lot of cue for the cash. More importantly, they have a great, solid hit!

Esoteric Lead Time

I think the question is not so much, who makes a good cue within your budget, but how long their lead time is.
DZ cues states 1 year on his web page.
Leon Sly needed 3 months for my player, i guess longer for a 8 pointer.
As far as i know Jim Baxter does not do 8 pointers.
The Esoteric cues look sweet, but i have no idea of his lead time.

I talked to Rick last week and asked him to start on a cue for me. With points, veneers, and inlays, he said it would be ready by April 1, so looks like about 3 months.

Kent Davis in CA. IMO maybe the best I've hit with.
Jack Madden in Montana.

IMO Davis cues have a little less deflection & Madden has a little longer taper.
But try contacting these makers yourself. Less mark up aka better bang for your buck.
Good luck on your journey

Josh

+1 for Kent Davis

I don't know if he's taking orders or not, but Kenny Murrell makes awesome cues. His pointwork is right up there with the best of em. He's also a great guy. He might not be taking orders, but if he is, he should at least be an option.

What he said.....

And another nod to Leon Sly. Great cues, and great guy to talk to.

KM and LS are both good choices.

You have seen some awesome choices for cue makers. It is my opinion that most of these cue makers can make you an awesome cue.

When I buy a cue one thing that is important to me is resell value. My suggestion is to start buying some used cues from some of the makers you are interested in. Try to find a cue that you can sell for similar value in case you dont like the feel.

A good start would be with this Barnhart. This is an 8 point cue that is priced right. I dont think you could get a mid tier maker to make you a new 8 pointer for much less than this cue.

Wow that`s not bad. I think i need to add Rick to my list of cue makers i "need" a cue from... :D

I second Leon sly not only quick great quality. One really nice guy to deal with.
I have a fullsplice ebony/maple bumperless hoppe cue from Leon Sly. Great cue, it`s so nice i ordered a "twin" purple heart/maple bumperless hoppe cue from him a week after i got the first one...

I got to give a shout out to Bob Flynn @ Denali cues too.
He is currently building me a breaker and a jump cue, both full purple heart core cues with G10 3/8x10 pin and purple heart shafts. I think i payed just over $500 for both, wich is almost too cheap.

Not according to Bob Owens site, it says he won the us open using his Schurtz.
