Looking to have custom cue made

I am new here on AZ and am interested in having my first custom cue made for me. Please PM me if this is something you can possibly do to my specs below. Thanks!

-Budget $1200 or less
-4 jet black ebony points into a birdseye maple forearm
-Turquoise or some other blue colored inlays in the points TBD
-A couple veneers on the points of matching blue and black or something similar TBD (recommendations welcome)
-Ivory joint and Ivory Buttcap
-Ivory and black stitched rings
-Leather or Lizard wrap TBD
-Birdseye maple butt sleeve with jet black ebony windows and inlays to match the forearm (possibly would like to do points instead of windows with matching inlays. Again, open to recommendations.)
- 19 oz for weight

Please PM me with estimated lead time and a ballpark price to do this. I’m still in the design phase and am open to any suggestions you may have regarding what I would like to have done.

Reply with q’s.

Thanks,

Shawn

Contact WilleeCue , if he's up to it , you'll get the most bang for your buck on planet earth ... He does real nice inlay work ...

24 inlays, 4 points, ivory joint & butt, ivory rings, leather or lizard wrap. That's a heck of a lot of cue for a $1200 budget.

On the low side of typical cue pricing, the ivory joint would be $100, ivory butt $200, leather wrap $100, $25 each inlay x 24 = $600, points x $25 each $100. That's already $1100 & you don't have the base price of the cue body and shaft(s) figured in yet. If you get this cue for $1200, you are getting a steal.

Eric, do you have any intentions on possibly building this or are you just going to quote $ on what your cost would be to do it? Shawn is a very good friend of mine that is looking to have his first cue made and is new to the site. He threw out a budget number. He DID NOT mention anything about the quantity of inlays. He DID mention to PM him if this is something you can possibly do to his specs. He also DID mention it is still in design phase.

If he gets the cue for $1200 it is not a steal, it is probably pretty close to the real price. Need an example?

My girlfriends Dale Perry cue cost $1000. Yep I know it’s Dale Perry so we can hold off on comments on him, his cues, and his business practice. It is DP6-5 on his site below. He let her do a lizard upgrade for $100 taking it from $900 to $1000. Low and behold it has 24 turquoise inlays in the points as well as turquoise rings. Add in your ivory joint and buttcap for (your price) $300 and you get $1300 which isn’t too far off on what he is asking for.

I’m not trying to bust your balls and I know you like to “tell it how it is”, but if you have no intention on helping point him in the right direction, or offer to build for him please move along and don’t post. Like he said it is still in design phase and this is his first custom cue. Let’s make it a good experience instead of saying if he gets something for $1200 he is getting a steal.

I know zilch on all the steps involved in making the cue and you can probably tell me I am clueless using the DP as an example comparing how he constructs his cue vs how you or any other maker would do it; however it has been less than 1 day and he already has 2 PMs with offers not including the 1 posted in the thread to contact Willecues. Maybe it isn’t so farfetched or a steal as you call it to have it done….just sayin…

Free bump for Shawn to get several more PMs or offers before he makes his decision. Happy Friday all.

You misinterpreted my post. Drop the defensive gaurd for a moment & absorb what I said instead of assuming i'm just making asshole comments. The intent of my post was to offer helping hints to your friend, as well as to any newbie builder who might be getting excited at the opportunity to build a $1200 cue.

For your friend, consider this. The cost of building the cue he clearly described is high. Combine that cost with the skills required, time, machine time, utilities, etc. & this cue is going to be more costly to build than it is supposed to sell for. Experienced & solid builders know this. Newbie builders may not, and therefore would be biting off more than they could chew. The other option would be a failing cuemaker who cannot sell cues otherwise.....and I don't have to tell you that there are reasons he is failing as a cuemaker. Point being, the design given at the budget given has a high potential to go faulty, for both the buyer and the builder.

It's a nice idea to post a design & budget & wait for builders to compete for the job. But this isn't priceline. The budget is too small for the design, no matter who the builder is. That could be big trouble for everybody involved if a builder actually agrees to do it. My point was that your friend, a newbie here, should take a step back & reconsider his option vs. budget ratio or else he might end up with something he didn't bargain for. I wasn't being a dick. I was being realistic. When I said that the deal would be a steal, I didn't say who would be getting robbed.

Eric, I appreciate what you have told me and like Matt said I am new at this. Really at this point I have in my mind what I would like to have in a cue and nothing more. I definitely can appreciate the time it takes to build a quality cue. I put a price out there to show what I can afford, not meaning for it to be a bidding war. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

steve lomax had a cue at the smokey mountain shootout that was perfect black ebony points with a birdseye formarm with five veneers in the red and green color patern.....matching butt with windows...nice silver rings and a beautifull lizard wrap......price..............1,500!!!....so thats just my two cents.......he might still have it.

Thank you for the post sir. Shawn, Steve's handle is stevel on here if you want to look him up.

That makes sense. I apologize if I come off a little sharp around the edges. The intent was helpful, not harmful.

I think if you compromised a little on your material choices, you could open your options of cuemakers by the dozens. The design itself isn't that extraordinary or expensive. Maybe drop the ivory & use something else that's white like MPI, elforyn, aegis, etc. Go for a nice lizard print leather wrap rather than real lizard or exotic leather. Just subbing the ivory for synthetic would shave roughly $400, on the low side, bringing you from $1200 to $800. If you did that & kept your $1200 budget, it would open the door to a lot of qualified builders who build very nice cues. Just something to consider.

Steve Lomax would be as good as you'll get for that money. He does awesome work & is as honest as a man comes.
