Lots of Pics :: Shanghai Billiards Expo + ZEN Cues + Tournament

There's a Billiards Expo going on in China, Shanghai now and i couldn't resist the temptation. Flew up to Shanghai with John Barton for 2 days and it was a blast (though most of the fun didn't come from the expo itself :grin.
I've never been to the SBE before but i know for sure that the CBE (China Billiards Expo, yup that's what it's called..) is NO WHERE near SBE. I was there last year and there was only 1 dealer that brought custom cues...so there was only 1 pathetic booth that sold custom cues last year. This year it's 300% better! Cos there were 3 booths that had custom cues...

China is such a HUGE market, i just wish there would be some cue makers or dealers from the states that would be willing to fly over to participate. Well hopefully next year it'll get better.

Despite the lack of custom cues available at the Expo it was still a great trip. Here's why.

1) I finally got to check out ZEN Cues newer offerings...they are GORGEOUS! They were basically sold out on the first day... check out the pictures and you'll see why.

2) There was an on-going tournament at the poolhall right next to our hotel and there were quite some players there as the China Open just ended few days ago. So i manage to catch myself some great game up close.

3) Finally caught up with Paul and Chady after all these time...

4) Whiskey. Lots of Whiskey. Ask John.

Is the underside lighting for the tables a trend over there? I see the tables in the booth are lit underneath in addition to the tables being played on.
Great pictures of the yellow cloth *shudder* makes my eyes tired even thinking about playing on that.

The Brunswick Tables are all made by a Chinese manufacturer named Yalin. They are authorised by Brunswick to produce these tables for the Chinese market. Yalin is a fairly big brand in China when it comes to tables.

I've never heard of the brand Sampro as well, but i've also not heard of 80% of the other table brands in China cos there's just that many of them here. That said the Sampro table is really really well built, i played on them in Shanghai and aesthetically everything looks real tight and flush. Table feels solid.

In all honesty the cue so was so so since there weren't that many customs available, it was more of a nice get together for fellow enthusiast. With the right exhibitors in place i'm sure this event will be much better.

Hey Greg, the pics are pretty bad actually...but there was no way i could carry my DSLR and 4x8 case around the show..so it was back to my point and shoot. Wish i brought the DSLR though..would have been able to do more justice to the ZEN cues...

Chady was a great host as well, had a blast with him.

John looks well cos that's the first day...you should've see him the next day :grin:

Those are for Snooker Cues. They hold what i would called a 3/4 Snooker Cue.

It's pretty much a default Expo setup here in China. They've been doing this for 5yrs now and i'd say they get better.

The intention of the show was more like a Trade Fair where pool room owners or big dealers would come in to see what they'd want to buy, that's why there's numerous pool table manufacturers. Unlike the SBE where it's targeted more for end consumer.
This is the part where i think CBE needs to address and make some changes to as i see more end consumers attending the show and wanting to visit the show but there's just not enough content for them.

It is sort of a trend here, there are quite some pool halls with tables that has these under lightings. I've seen a couple where even the diamonds on the table are lit.

My camera might have made the cloth brighter than it is, i'd say it's dirty yellow or mustard yellow.

That would be way awesome! The next big event would be in Guangzhou which should happen sometime in March. I hear it's better than the Shanghai show. If you guys are interested i could try to contact the organiser and have them to post here.
