Louie Roberts award

Grady should definitely be in the running - maybe for the lifetime achievement award for stirring up action - AND betting on HIS OWN MONEY

I would have to agree with the above statement...

Grady lasting as long as he has on his own dime is more than impressive

Forget about this award, they need to get Grady's name on the BCA HOF ballot. It's long overdue and he's more than deserving of the honor.

Gotta think Grady should get a mention. At his age, playing as long, several sets, and for as much as he did against Justin, took alot of heart. I believe he even forfeited one match in the tournament to keep playing. If you saw him playing, you can see what a toll it took on him.
It wasn't just against Justin, either. I know Grady also matched up with 'Nate' and came out ahead. I'm pretty sure Grady was in more games than Shane was in the action room this year, and pretty sure every one was for decent dough...

Grady is 100% a good candidate for the Louis Roberts Award, and for the BCA HOF.

But that said, the hall of fame that he is in, the One Pocket Hall of Fame, is turning into a bigger and bigger thing each year, and it's no small honor that Grady was the very first guy to get in it! You should have seen the crowd at the dinner this year -- it was packed, and there had to have been 30 or 40 top legends of the game there, past present & on the sidelines, among the 130 or so guests.

Thanks, Steve... IMO, the 1P HOF is just as much of an honor - and I am sure that honor means more to Grady than anything else.

SVB has the nuts in the 2008 Louie Roberts award. I can't see how he could lose this.

2nd place imo is between Cone, Scooter and TAR guys.

when will the announcement be made?
The voting closes one week after the DCC and a press release will be sent. You'll read it here first.

I was there all week. I think Lil D from Hattiesburg was hell on some folks this week. The kid gets up like 10, 15k and gambles it away in one morning. Thats worth something there. If nothing else a honorable mention. Scooter gambled all damn week. He was in a constant gamble. He'd let you pick em. He didn't care who he was betting on. He just wanted action. Tedder had quite a bit of action himself. Hell he went all in on his first set he played I think. He lost that by the way. Justin Cone was in a lot of action. He played Grady, Chohan, Shannon Murphy, Shane Van. Shane had a lot of action but I hate to say I don't really think he should get the Louie. IMO he was staked in most if not all he did. Not that is bad, but the guys sending there cash in there everytime will always get my vote. I think Scooter gets it this year. If Shane gets it (which I bet he will) I will be a little disapointed.

Hey FRED since you had to come at me like that. What is the prize of the award. Tourny entry fot life as stated at onepocket.org. So why would you put the same guy up for the award if he already has that.

I didn't. I laughed. Out loud. I was laughing. That means I was being jovial. In a grouchy sort of way. Hey, I'm grouchy. I've been up way too long. Need an apology? You got it.

Prestige?

The award is given out by the goodness of Diamond Billiards and Greg Sullivan. The winner gets their name and photo in the photos of champions that line the tournament halls. I'd think that would be enough, considering they already get the free ride.

I won't argue the sense of that decision, but that's been part of the rules since the beginning, before I took over the committee. Anyone can win. That means past champions and non-players as well.

The gray area is the nomination of the TAR group. I'd love them to be able to get the award, but the "rules" say that the award goes to the "person." They deserve some kind of recognition, If they come out close in the voting, I think the committee will need to relook at the criteria.

Let's not over-rate Shane for the Action Award

I was at the Derby myself for a week, and I was real impressed with seeing Shane up most of two nights for two great sets, but how many sets did he actually get into in there? I saw three sets, and at least two or three other nights that he didn't go in the room at all -- resting up for the tournament I would say. I might have missed something, but not much.

Any of you guys that saw the room through the Action Report Eyes only, I think you got a skewed view -- no offense to the Action Report, but they focused on one table, not the whole room. You guys saw a lot of Shane, but in the room, it was definitely not just the Shane show. In fact, I believe there were at least 10 players in more action than Shane -- and it was good entertaining action. Some of these guys are quiet, like Shane is quiet, but they didn't get the Action Report cameras turned on them every time they matched up like Shane did. Others definitely create more of a stir in the room every time they are there by virtue of their outgoing personality. No offense to Shane, but he's no Louie Roberts in personality -- he's more in the mold of Nick Varner in that regard.

Grady, Justin Cone, and this kid -- and others -- were more involved every day, IMO:

Shane played (that I remember):

Hennesse twice
Cliff twice
Justin Cone once (Long Set)
Alex three times

The difference between Shane and the others mentioned here is that when Scooter or Justin matched up people said "Oh...what are they doing?" when Shane matched up in tough games that he didn't always win people said "Excuse me can I sit here for 10 hours"

The buzz before his set with Justin Cone was as big as anything I have ever seen in the action room. Then it was topped by the first Alex set...people were stopping me in the hall for the next 2 days saying "That was the best set I have ever seen."

But...hey...this opinion comes from a guy looking through TAR eyes.

Make that 8 sets...so yeah you missed alot. He played Alex 3 sets alone to cover what you stated.

Cliff 8b for 2500
Cliff 1p for 2500
Pinegar 10b for 2500
Pinegar 10b for 5k
Cone 1p for 8k(? 35k counting rail...people throwing lots of diff figures)
Alex 3 sets for 5k each 10b

I count 7 days of playing a high profile set...2 sets with Alex were on the same day.

Edit: JCIN beat me to it

True I was only there for 7 days -- three of which Shane was on the sidelines (in the tournament room :) ). How many of those sets were booked and arranged by The Action Report, and how many were actaully stirred up by Shane himself? I'm not knocking -- just asking. The Roberts award is for stirring up action, imo... Of course people want to watch a great player like Shane.

Exact wording on the criteria of the award... The award is given to the person that exemplifies the terms "Action and Entertainment"

Nowhere in that description does it say that you must "stir up" your own action. Shane was in as much or more action than anyone.

Hundreds of railbirds sat and watched and bet and cheered and cried and cursed over each and every one of those sets. He played the highest profile matches and I would highly doubt he did not take part in "booking" those matches. Perhaps TAR will speak up and allude to the match making process that happened for some of those matches, but I wouldn't blame them nor expect them too.

What one defines as entertainment is very opinionated of course....there is no right or wrong in the matter. My vote would possibly go to another to be honest, but facts are facts in regards to the amount of action and entertainment provided by the SD kid.

Shane wins (eyes wide open)

Shane gave up the weight, played all the better players while playing in all the tournements. For hours and hours his matches were not flash in the pan action. How many people bet on the side at shane's matches- It is quality of play at the highest level he played pretty consistent. Who else played cliff? shane matched up in 8-ball, one pocket, gave up the break and the last two. He rose from the mass of players, he played alex and on and on. Shane wins hands down, Scooter and the rest are just shortstops- Fatboy made a brief visit and under thw wing of Johnny Archer who wanted to play doubles with scooter and another. Maybe Eric(fatboy) should have given some 10-1 odds. How about the new rules change for wearing a collared shirt in matches and tv table. Both Billy and Fatboy refused to wear collars-ther special I guess. did ya see billy get drilled by the freezer at 500 a rack. And cliff played great in the race to 21 8-ball. Cliff impressed me totally. thats my review, and thats to (jcin and his staff) for putting on a great show! mark
