Low deflection shaft question....

it seems like it does add some unwanted english at times. don't really notice it with the predators but with the meucci red and black dot the ball spins a little too much to me. seems to come off at a slightly different angle as well

That question can slide down a very slippery slope because the word "average" can be fundamentally deceiving.

If you have a basketball team where 3 players are 6'6" and two are 5 ft. the AVERAGE height is about 6 ft. which doesn't sound too bad...but you won't win a single game in the Bigs. (-:

But just to use an extreme to prove a point...if there was such a thing as a ZERO deflection cue, which in every other way, behaved just like a traditional cue then I doubt that many reasonalbe people would argue about the fundamental superiority of a cue that ELIMINATED a variable that can and does cause shots to be missed.


So, to the extent that a given cue produces a significant reduction in that variable, then....IF ALL ELSE IS EQUAL...that cue would be proportionally superior to the other cue.

That concept is analagous to skeet shooting in zero wind vs. X mph of wind...and the degree of gusts.

To shoot in wind...even a constant mph of wind, introduces the need to GUESS at how the lead must be changed whereas in zero wind, there is no guessing. The lead can be solved by math/geometry and would be the same every time.

Since squirt varies with the degree of tip offset and since tip offset cannot be arrived at exactly every time then squirt is a variable that can ONLY be guessed at by the shooter...some more successfully than others.

So, except for those whose stroking skills have reached near-perfection...which excludes the "average player" your post refers to, there is little doubt that a reduction in deflection vs. X will benefit the player.

The age-old exception being those players who have reached world-class skills and/or those who are too old to adopt new approaches...and who "grew up" on traditional shafts.

For those people...if it ain't broke, dont' fix it.

they are however less forgiving with unintended off centre hits. you may have heard the old adage that low squirt shafts are more forgiving with off centre hits. that's a myth - it's the other way around.


What is your source of data in support of that theory? Predator, of course, has published significant data to the contrary.


this as well, it's not particularly true. it's more that if a beginner player learns from scratch then a low squirt shaft is better because he doesn't have to bother learning how to compensate for all the squirt. plus there is the argument that compensating for barely any deflection at all is easier than compensating for a lot. therefore a less skilled player will find this easier.

but the argument in your quote, that a not so good player would be better with a low deflection shaft is all to do with deflection, not putting spin on the ball.



that is simply because you haven't hit the ball in the centre (hence all the spin on the ball) and you have also cut the ball a bit causing you to miss. it's your stroke. :)

My 2cents. I've been playing for, well since I was 6, I'm now 41. I screwed an OB-1 on my Schon...both shafts had NEW Talisman Mediums....and the OB-1 just put all kinds o spin on the ball! I"m not talking hmmm that might have a little more action.....I'm talking, DID YOU SEE THAT?

Sadly, the OB wasn't what I was looking for. I really wanted to like that shaft. I now have a 314-2 on my Schon, and it plays exactly like what I had in mind in an L/D shaft.

My GUESS is that the taper of the OB-1...its weight vs. your other shaft...the different tip diameters (possibly)...in other words some one or a combination of the physical differences between the shafts led you to strike the CB lower with the OB-1.

If not...if that shaft TRULY results in more spin....ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL...would have led me to do the same thing you did...stop using it and go back to the 414-2.

IMHO...spin above the amounts that can be applied with a house cue, may do a lot for the EGO but is generally irrelevant if not damaging to the shooter's game due to the introduction of as much error as benefit and the extremely small number of occasions where such excessive (IMHO) amounts of spin are required.

You get used to how a type of cue shoots. I think you get into a good or bad stroke, that has a big influence on the hit. Some types of cues are more forgiving to bad stroke than others.Different tips will also come into play.I think the reason for the not intended spin is that on the particular shot, did not hit it exactly where you thought you did.
Video the shot helps, but it takes alot to see the small amounts that have an impact. 1 test is to repeat hitting a ball to the rail down the length of the table. If you do not hit the endrail square or if you have spin on th eball, it will not come back down over the table spot. I was surprise how often I missed the spot , yet thought I hit the ball well. A spotted or 9 ball works well. Stroke control is the key to pool.
I like the lower deflection shafts myself.
