Low priced cue owners

I play with sub $300 cues not by personal choice but by economic choice.
I was just wondering how many of you play with inexpensive cues and what are they.
Mine are plain janes by Lucasi and Terry McFadden. The McFadden new was more but I bought it used at a good deal.
 
my first cue was a used 'players' sneaky pete i bought for 20$ used. i love it and have won a few tournaments with it. played with it for years(still do sometimes). i just bought a sub 300$ lucasi and i dig it too...no complaints really. i've never really tried anything too expensive so maybe i don't know what i'm talking about.
 
nothing wrong at all with playing with less expensive cues. i've hit with $20-$60K ( that's right 60 thousand dollars) cue and imo i've hit with cues under $300 that play better.

i bought a used mezz axi-k for under $300 and i use a J.W. Petree jump break that i bought for slightly over 300.

i used to get beat week after week at my favorite weekly local barbox tournament by a guy using the same lucasi you use. and another guy i used to go off to used that lucasi with the radial pin 4points into rosewood i think, don't know the model number

One reason I recommend Pechauer cues ...the lower cost ones are built just like the expensive ones. You are paying for the decoration.
 
I've played with sneaky pete's the last 20 years. I've found nothing wrong with the way they play. My current one is a custom stick, made by Mike Deli in San Diego. The cost was well under $300. I've tried many high-end cues and only a few impressed me with the quality of the hit over my simple little sneaky.
 
SVB plays w an inexpensive production cuetec and he seems to play ok from what I've seen:grin:
 
My JOSS cost me $35.00 in 1985. Worth probably a grand or so now.

I have two newer JOSS cues that cost less than a C note.

Most of my cues in fact are under $200 and I have only twice ever spent $200 on a cue.

Names I have: JOSS, Huebler, Meucci Originals, Espiritu, McDermott, Predator, Viking....and more.

You can very easily get a really great cue for a "low price", even a custom.


Nothing wrong with getting bang for your buck.

Don't let the forums fool you, you don't have to spend a lot of money to play great pool. In fact a $50 sneaky pete can serve extremely well.

yo i know mike!!!! he's a friend of mine. well technically he's family. i still have one of his sneakies too. it's warped to hell. nothing he did i left it in the car for 3 years. it stayed straight the whole 3 years until i took it out.

Mike ever tell you he was EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) when he was in the USMC?
 
There isn't a thing wrong with an inexpensive cue, as long as it's straight and has a good tip on it. :smile:
 
I once told a guy that its not "what" you play with, it's "that" you play.

Get out and have fun, invite your non pool playing friends. Many very nice cues can be had for less than $150, the selection is much greater than it used to be, so enjoy!

I wish Efren plays with his old $15.00 cue, he is missing a lot with his sponsor cues, or age...
 
lucasi + 314, picked it up for 120$, plays just like any predator i've tried. looks good too. some say they are even made in the same factory, but i don't know. should never say never but i don't think i'll ever change.
 
I played with a dufferin sneaky pete for 8 years. I stopped in a Schicks place and had him put a nice taper on it and I loved it.
 
Well. my "honorary nephew" Matt Horner just won the Master's singles at the Western BCA regional championships. Never lost a match...

Most of those who post about cues here would laugh at his...a very plain looking sneaky with a stacked leather wrap I bought him for his birthday several years back. (I bought the wrap..not the cue.) Solid maple shaft, and he just went to a Kamui medium black tip. He uses a poison jump/break...definitely NOT fancy gear. He's tried laminated shaft cues, doesn't like 'em.

Also, he's married with child, has a (eek!) job...yet still has the talent to play that well.

So, definitely...you don't need a $pendy cue to be a good player. What you need is the desire to become one, and the work eithic to put in the time. Oh...and good genetics giving you good eyesight & good hand/eye coordination doesn't hurt! ;)
 
There are many fine cues to be had for $300.00. I'm a big fan of the early to mid 80's Dan Janes Joss cues, many times they can be bought on ebay for a cheap price and his cues from that era play wonderfully.
 
I don't have a lot of experience with cues, so I have no perspective. But most folks who try my McDermott tell me they like it.

About $200 for mine.
 
$225 mid 1980's Palmer. I had to buy a new stick because I needed to return the Rich cue I bought from a friend with the stipulation if he ever wanted it back I would sell it back for the same $50 I paid for it.

I have had two Canadian-made Falcons, one that was ~$200, and the other about $400, for nearly 15 years. Love them. Also have a Predator SP that $takehor$e reworked. Fantastic hitting cue. I have a sub-$500 custom from PI that I like, too. Nothing against pricier cues, but the ones I have work well, and hit a lot better than I do.
 
Most of the cues I sell are below $300, and so far nobody has complained about any of them. From what I know about most cues over $300, like J13smiley said, its mostly about decoration, the specific materials used, or individual cue makers.
