Lubbock TX - Questions on putting together a good tournament

Thinking about putting together a tournament in Lubbock TX, at my dad's joint, Jakes (50th and Slide), this a nice sports bar with live music and good food and COLD beer. This could be a pretty decent place to run a tournament. They currently have 4 Valley bar tables. While I am down here visiting for a week or so, I have down some work in the back to straighten up the tables, we are lowering the coin charge down to 75 cents and going to magnetic cue balls from the mud ball and improving the lights etc.

I was thinking about coming back and running a tournament, I spoke with the vending operator and we could probably get some more tables one way or another. I think with 8 more tables which could easily fit in the live music area giving us a a total of 12 tables or so which would be plenty for a tournament.

I would like to get a 64 man plus field and get some of the better players from the region. I do not want to travel back down from Indy to run a tournament in a few months or so and have a bombed out field with not so many players. The reason I mention this is over the weekend I went and played in a Fast Eddies tourney in Amarillo where they only had about 25 or so players I do not know the exact number but it was a short field.

What do the TX, OK, NM players here on AZ think it would take to fill a tournament. How much added this would be guaranteed not contingent on a full field, quarters vs. green fees.

Also another question I have is can you have a calcutta in TX. I know they did not have one at the Fast Eddies tournament. The TABC has to be taken into consideration since this is a sports bar with alcohol.

Would there be any interest in TX for a 1000 dollar added Valley bar box tourney with magnetic cue balls in Feb or so, I do not like the Nov/Dec thing due to the holidays and I will be at the Derby in Jan so Feb might work and that is far out so plans could be made. I would definitely want a date that worked so we could get a good field. If anyone on here is from TX and is knowledgeable give me a PM.

Bump for Texas input

I thought there might be some interest in a tourney in Lubbock.

I'll give you my 2 cents worth from my experience in going to Texas Tech for 4 years. I went out there for college and played pool whenever I could and the college even has/had a billiard club. No matter which place I went to play there was never a strong crowd of players for a tournament. You might end up putting a whole lot of effort into it, but getting 64 players is highly unlikely in my opinion. Best of luck if you do decide to give it a shot.

....and if you see that Elvis T. Busboy (singer/band) is playin' in a music venue (bar/nightclub) anywhere around, try to go and check him out. Very entertaining fellow with a great backing band. He's from Littlefield and plays around Lubbock often.

I was hoping to attract a bigger than Lubbock array of players. Perhaps having entries of 50 dollars plus and guarenteeing a thousand added we could attract a decent crowd. The first fast eddies tourney had 80 plus players in Lubbock I heard and I know there are quaite a few top notch bar box players in the area from Dalls to New Mexico and up into Okie country just wondering what ti would take to get them to show up.

You can not legally have calcuttas in Texas.

Is that just for pool because I googled Texas Calcutta Golf and came up with the following from the Lubbock area. It looks like a golf course had a tourney with a calcutta and was in Texas near lubbock.

I also asked the TABC today about the calcutta and they said no calcutta would be allowed. They did say we could have a pool tourney and add money to the pot.

Lubbock tourney

I think it would be a great idea if structured properly. If the money is right the players will come. A ''players auction" is legal as long as the participants are entered in the tourney. It is illegal for sweaters & railbirds to participate. If your a "money man""backer" stake horse & want to bid;all you have to do is enter. I wish Elvi all the best . Lubbock used to be known for quality events; this could happen again. Lets hear from some more of you money players.

This issue woluld easily go away if people would stop alerting the TABC.
For 9000th time, the law has nothing to do with it. The TABC and the LAW are totally seperate issues. Please stop alerting the TABC and this issue will simply go away!!!!!

success

Plenty of advertising to get the word. as far as the Calcutta I wouldn't have said word one to TABC just askin for trouble there. if you want to have one then just do it.
