Today i took my cue to Chris Byrne of CB cues(Englewood Co.) to have it re wrapped. It came with a cheap looking leather wrap and Chris put on a linen brown with white specks wrap. It looks great and he did a fine job.
I watched him do it and when he removed the leather we saw maple wood that was cut into 4 pie shaped pieces and glued together. He said they did this for strength. Is this a common practice?
 
Some custom makers laminate their handle wood.
Some don't.
If you asked the question in Ask the Cue Maker, you'd probably find out which ones do and don't, and the reasoning behind laminating the handle wood or not.

The leather wrap on my Lucasi LE-66, although not very expensive looking, has the perfect feel that I like. What impressed me the most about it is that for a cue of this price, the seam on the leather wrap is almost impossible to detect with the naked eye. I saw a lot of EXPENSIVE custom cues for sale at the Galveston World Classic with leather wraps installs that were FAR inferior to mine (seams sticking out like a street curb). Do you just prefer linen or was your wrap all that inferior?

I have never played with leather before and did not like the feel. Everyone that saw it asked if it was real or vinyl. I guess i got a bad looking piece of leather. Also the linen has made the grip a little smaller which suits my short fingers. And yes the seam in the leather was hard to see.
