Magic Eraser???

There is a local guy here who told me he cleans his entire shaft including the ferrule with a magic eraser, and then uses burnishing paper to smooth it back out. He finishes with a very light grit sandpaper. My question is wouldn't the chemicals in the Eraser cause damage to the wood? His shaft looked brand new and was as slick as any I have ever used. I am just curious as to the longevity of this technique??
 
I assumed that there are chemicals used in the pen to allow it to clean. I may be wrong being that I have not used one, but everything I have ever used to clean is made up of some chemical compound.
 
Its just a sponge that cleans good with water, its supper porous or not super porous. One of the two.

Theres alot of old threads on this too.
 
No no no no no no....

The Magical Magic Eraser is a scrubbing pad thingy with special fiber thingies that removes scuff marks on walls and clean the hell out of a pool cue shaft. You can the get them in the cleaning aisle at the grocery store.

Burnish with a piece of brown paper bag and your shaft will feel just like his. Shmooooth....

OOPPs, didnt mean use water on your shaft though. lol

Magic Eraser is a brand name for melamine foam. Here is a Wikipedia link that will clear things up for you about this material.

Have used them for years with water. Have never had any ill effects. If you dont like the idea use rubbing alcohol.

no chemicals and I believe its made from melamine. It is mildly abrasive.

I was experimenting with cleaning a shaft with liquid furniture abrasive. Like polish. I first used a fine and then a super fine. I let it dry then buffed it with a dry paper towell. It was so sticky, there was no way I could play with it. I then used a dry Magic Eraser. It came out perfectly smooth and burnished.
 
i like mildly damp papertowel then a dry towel. alcohol will break down the glues in a layered tip. tip will fall apart.

also wash your hands with soap and water before you shoot maybe in the middle. works wonders then you dont need all that crapolla
 
I have personally been using the Magic Eraser for years. I keep passing this information on to all pool players I meet. Most of them are skeptical at first...Some don't even try it. But the ones that do are very pleased and thankful for the tip.
 
Use it with rubbing alcohol, wipe down with a damp cloth then burnish.

what advantages does magic eraser have over sand paper? what grit is it comparable to?

and if anyone knows, what grit are both of q-wiz's sides? q-wiz seems like washable long lasting sand paper.
 
I wouldn't say it is anything like sand paper. It won't degrade a material very much, it will destroy itself before it damages anything. Lol....If I had to, I would say that it is 800 grit. That's a pure feeler/guess though..
