making a table play faster

I do not know if this is in the right section but I just want to know what you guys think. The table i bought plays extremely slow, like a dirty bar-box with skanky balls. I do not have a clue how to get it to play faster though, I have cleaned it with a wet rag numerous times, I have ironed it, took a lint roller to it and everything, but its still slow. So I was wondering if you guys have any ideas. My balls are reasonably clean, still shiny, but the only thing I can think of is that the cloth is not stretched tight enough. Any ideas on making it faster?

the cloth is not stretched enough, or your rails are old and dead...if the rails are not dead then they could be set too high and pinching the balls and killing the speed when it hits them.

Besides that the only thing that might help is you could use some spray starch and then Iron the table....did that at a friends house once on some old cloth and it made the table look like a mazda commercial.

Hey Grey ghost, that sounds like a good idea, but does it make the cueball slide like it's on brand new cloth?

Also a lighter weightball set, and a ball cleaner is a good way to keep the speed up.

Overhaul it!

yea a little bit if i remember correctly, we had flipped the old cloth upside down so it was knappy and used the spray starch to get it to lay down and fly

I read this and noticed your age, 17. The first table my dad bought when I was 10 was a 7 ft table with 1/4" particle/plywood (don't really know) bed. I swear that the cloth was nothing better than a cheap table cloth. The rails had the profile but the rubber was completely dead.

We had a lot of fun. Learned how to aim. Helped me develop a great draw shot. Use to practice for hours to get the ball to draw back a few inches. When I got on a real table couldn't believe how far the ball would travel.

It was impossible to bank a ball because of the rails.

Sold the table when I was 18 and got more than we paid for it. Sold it to some young kids a few blocks away. Picked up a old Brunswick from a guy that was moving out of state.

I can feel your frustrations, but it is better than nothing.

Hope those ideas help as all of the things you really need to do are probably out of your price range.

Take the top off and tighten the cloth. It is not that difficult. It might take an afternoon but it is worthwhile if it is a slate table.

The first time you might want to get some help from someone who has done it before. You could also search the web for how to install pool table cloth and follow the instructions.

You need a couple of wrenches, or sockets, maybe an allen wrench and two guys to lift off the intact set of rails. Take the staples out with a pair of pliers and use the same size staples to re-install.

While you have the cloth off, clean the bed and the bottom of the cloth.
