Making Brown Phenolic.....Darker

Hi,

I've got an older Huebler SP cue with a dark/mahogany colored brown phenolic joint ring.......I'm trying to match it up with a new shaft :rolleyes:

I've got some brown phenolic which looks identical as it sits raw stock but, when I turn the joint collar down on the shaft it turns into a lighter colored almost tan color :eek:

I can try to stain the phenolic but, the stain doesn't want to stick to the material!?!?

Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated,

I've got some stuff which is actually darker than the joint material -- until I turn it down to size :rolleyes:

Actually, I'm beginning to think the real answer is to cutoff the joint collar on the butt and replace it with the same material on the shaft joint and then......WAALAA!?

That may be the only way to get it to match, most likely if it were mine that is what I would do.
 
give it a sun tan

see it ultraviolet light will turn it dark after the shaft ring is turned down a little.
 
Is this the stuff you got from that guy in FL?:D if so It will turn darker as time goes on. Good Luck with it

All natural (brown/tan) phenolic darkens as it ages. In time, it will go back to it's original color that it was before cutting sanding.

Would resin impregnated rosewood be a good substiture for dark brown phenolic on buttcaps and joint rings? Would it be durable enough?

Although I've never used it I would say probably. I looked at and handled some Wildwood at the Trade show last week and this stuff was like phenolic. Some people are using plain hardwoods for joints and butt caps so if they will hold up I'm sure the impregnated stuff will.

Are those dymondwood or phenolic resin impregnated woods or polymer stabized wood Dick?

No, they're not diamond wood or anything artificial but solid wood with some kind of resin force all the way through it. The stuff is stunning to look at but it is very heavy and must be cored. Here are some pictures although I may have blown them up to large so that it is easy to see what it looks like. It's a little pricey also running from around 50.00 to around 200.00.
