Maple shafts from bowling alley wood

I got some of that wood. The growth rings generally lined up pretty well but most of it is curly maple. I wasn't pleased with that. As it turns out, most are turning true on the lathe.

I wouldn't touch it............... there is too much good maple available to mess with it.

Of course it is intriguing to think of old maple but as others have mentioned, for the asking price of alley wood as opposed to what you can get in dowel form, its probably not worth it.

The person gets to keep the best for himself and sells the less desirable squares to everyone else.

I'll take my chance with the suppliers that I have purchased from. I've had good luck for decent prices.

Some good shafts and some break shafts. Maybe some that could get used as cores or plugs. Not any tomato stakes as of yet.

I bought some nice straight grain handle wood and cores. Lets say that when the supplier states that the handle wood is nice enuff not to have to cover, he wasn't lying.

I made a break shaft for guy some time ago. when I saw the finished product, I said, darn, this is way to nice for a break shaft. I didn't charge him much but he does have a very nice break shaft.
