Masters, triangle chalk becoming outdated

I have used Masters and Silver Cup in the past and have both Magic Chalk and Blue Diamond for my home table.

I prefer the Magic and Blue Diamond.

Yes they cost more...probably $4/year vs 75 cents, how cheap are you guys?

I am not familiar with Taom. I had a Kamui evangelist let me try his sacred cube at a bar one night...definately what made me look beyond Masters but too messy for home use.

No I am not trying to buy a better game...does that really have to come up every time someone wants a new shaft or balls or chalk...especially coming from guys with a closet full of custom cues.

I just like a smoother, less dusty/squeaky chalk.

It's not about being cheap for me. Here's the thing: if it sticks so well to tips, doesn't it stick to everything else? It's like cleaning up a bunch of sawdust vs. cleaning up a bit of oil.

Wonder if there’s ever been a study on the
effects of breathing chalk dust for decades
Absolutely. Silica dust lodges into the fine air sacks of the lungs and inhibits proper oxygen absorption; but, you'd have to breath in a lot of it for a long period of time to develop a glass-like layer within your lungs. Studies were done back in the 70s on this exact subject due to Teachers, College Professors, and people who work in the factories which make chalks developing poor breathing and lung problems after years at the blackboard (cleaning the erasers really) or in a chalk-dust filled environment when OSHA material safety handling guidelines were not what they are today.

Whereas, you don't ever see clouds of chalk dust in a Pool Hall, unless some guy brings in one of those little bottles of Baby Power and goes crazy with it; or, some crazy starts flapping the old table cloth around when they do a recover.

Considering the sheer volume of cigarettes pool players used to smoke back in the day, I don't think anyone need worry about their personal health from using a little cube of chalk.

Anyone remember banging the classroom erasers together, and making clouds of chalk dust to torture your fellow classmates with?

Good times. - GJ

Never did that but there were a couple teachers I wanted to bang.

This begs the question:

Is there indeed a formula difference between Tweeten's Master, Triangle, and, Silver Cup chalk (or any other chalk for that matter) - which is not based on personal preference, but based on scientific fact?

Seems to me a Chemist could easily analyse and compare these different chalks to quantify the relative amounts of: Silca (Silicone Dioxide SiO2), Corundum (Crystal Aluminum Oxide Al2O3), Binding Agent, and Dye. Since the basic chalk formula which we use today has been around since before 1900, the only mystery to the difference in these 3 Tweeten chalks - if any - would be in the specific formulation 'recipe' (which can significantly affect play, paint-ability, and how well it holds or not ).

Just as we all have specific preferences for certain durometer rated cue tips by their hardness rating, why don't we have the same basic information for the chalk which we prefer (e.g. 80/20, 85/15, or 90/10 Silica/Corundum)? Also, the higher the level and type of binder used, would keep more chalk on the tip and less on the table, and result in a 'cleaner' chalk - so, perhaps you would want to add that number into your preferred chalk 'recipe' too, when selecting the right chalk for you - just like how you choose your preferred cue tip.

Someone on here must have a chemist buddy who could analyse 3 cubes of chalk to reveal the answer; even if only for gits and shiggles.

Anyone? - GJ

It costs $600-$1000 to run a complex spectrograph against a gram of chalk

Correct, and, which is specifically why I bothered to write: "Someone on here must have a chemist buddy who could analyse 3 cubes of chalk to reveal the answer; even if only for gits and shiggles." . Friends who work in labs and such and have routine access to such equipment can do plenty of favors during their lunch hour or unbeknownst to the firm they work for, if they like you enough. - GJ

20 year master chalk user here. When the only pool hall around you has crappy quality Master Chalk. You buy your own Master Chalk or try out $20 chalk that everyone seem to play with.

I tried:

Kamui Roku- Wasn't as messy, but still made a mess. Applied very thin.
Taom Pyro- Currently using, not as messy. Seems to apply thicker then other chalk. Does not seem to miscue a lot.

Think the Tweeten Compony oener chalk market as it is what most people use.

Yes there are other brands, that have small market share.

I'm the exactly the same way. I've always been a Master Chalk guy - on the other hand, I never had any issues with Triangle, NTS Black Label, or back in the day, Brunswick's Gold Crown chalk, but my chalk of choice was always simply been Master chalk - AND, if I ever grabbed one of my cue cases which didn't have chalk in it, and unless the cubes at the hall were relatively fresh, I would be a VERY UNHAPPY camper.

I don't know, something about being handed one of those dirty, lop-sided, drilled-out cubes of 'public' chalk, just always irked me... sort of like having to use one of those scuffed-up rental balls at the bowling alley; or borrow some guys dirty handkerchief. To me, it seemed like those types of halls didn't give a rat's tail about the condition of their equipment (chalk included), the quality of your experience there, and saving on a 25 cent cube of fresh chalk out-weighed their commitment to pool and their customers.

Those dirty, misshapen cubes of house chalk... errrr!

"Bring you own", I couldn't agree more. - GJ

I don't mind paying for chalk it's $20. If I'm paying that much for it DAMN WELL I'm going to find the best.

It's the same thing with Cue Tips for years i was using Le Pros till layered tips came around.

Well, to each his own and more power to you, Brother. Today's world of $20 chalk, $25 tips, and $5 Strabuck's Cafe Mocha Java Frappucino Lattes is definitely not for me. I'm of the Master Chalk, Elk Master tips, and $1 McDonalds black coffee World-of-Pool; so, I'll never spend $20 cash money on what works at 50 cents for me; unless that $20 chalk comes with in a '2-Pak' with a rack girl who makes Dolly Parton look like a malnourished child. - GJ

Exactly why both of them are still in Business.

So why blow 20 bucks on chalk that gets all over everything?
Well again, if you read, everyone that uses taom v10, can't find any dust on anything besides the tip
This has been said over and over by everyone that uses it. It's not kamui
20 bucks for something that lasts much longer than most 35 dollar tips that get changed several times a yr doesn't seem to bad to me.

It's the same debate EVERYTIME. You're never going to win this argument, some people are just cheap asses and not willing to spend anything extra. They are not spending it.

I use to work with a guy that needed a "specialized" car part. He had the choice of getting the part in the USA or the UK he chose the part from the UK. A month later he was bitching i should of gotten the part in the USA for $.50 more. ABSOLUTE CHEAPASS

My wife use to buy $30 hand bags from Kohl's every three months not because they went out of style but because they broke. I was tired of hearing her complain. I took her to the Coach store and buy her a $200 bag it lasted 2 years. Needless to say she don't buy cheap stuff no more. She buys stuff that is quality. NOW SHE LOOKS FOR QUALITY NOT CHEAP.

Same debate Toasty O's are just as good as Cheerios. Some swear that the generic tastes exactly the same. I definitely can tell the difference. You get what you pay for it

It's not about being cheap, they just too Kool to pay that much for chalk, like us suckers 😆 but will pay alot like I mentioned for tips lol
It's a stigma for them, like the guys who get upset about glove wearing

Nah its just being cheap.

I pay $25 for a tip because it's damn consistent. Damn Le Pros i use to have to put on several of them to find the decent one. FYI the only reason why i put my own tips on was I'm a cheap ass and didn't want to spend $10 every time to get it changed. Also i do better quality work now.

I don't care I'm still not wearing a glove. I like the feel of the shaft. I've been using a CF shaft recently and it's just as smooth as my wood shaft.

I love beating guys with the chalk, little glove, cue stick holder, visor, shooting glasses, shaft weight, butt extension.....with a cue off the wall with a flat triangle tip.
