tennis fans

I think they need to be longer like tennis so the fans can enjoy what real pool is about.

There is an amazing amount of similarities between tennis and pool:

>Within our lifetime there was no professional tennis association
>So called pros were considered bad boys, hence ,"tennis Bum."
>Basically it is one against one , incorporating offense and defense
>The only team concept is doubles, both mixed and not.
> in order to be a true fan of tennis you must be a player( good or bad)
to understand what a challenge the sport is.

The last point is the most important . Tennis and pool will always have a finite audience. Players. One of the most important role of the USTA is the development of new players, thus more fans. A long process. 20 maybe 30 years. Who in pool is that dedicated?

One missing link between tennis and pool is that there is no one game that is the official game of pool. Tennis is standard in it's rules, playing field, and the talents needed to be a player.
That is the biggest road block to growing the sport. There has to be a governing body choose one game and promote it. 9-ball, 10-ball, 14.1, one pocket , banks, 8-ball, 15-ball rotation(French), 3c billiards snooker, snooker golf. The different rules for 8-ball alone drive me crazy. Although it's not my favorite, 8-ball IMHO holds the most promise for general promotion.

Oh well, another day, another problem solved.:sorry:

exactly which is why you should read my post about taking the game to the kids more, others think im crazy and keep talking olympic mumbo jumbo but you hit the nail on the head.

I agree.

The kids are where it's at. And finally the poolhalls are getting to be alot nicer place than they were 30 years ago.

When you show a kid something you never know where it will go.

Your not crazy.......

I think using the scoring like tennis would make for exciting pool.

Lag winner Starts set break...Match, first to win 2 sets
Race to 3 win by 2
Set race to 5

Example match:

I win lag and start break ( I break all racks win or lose point)...

B&R 1-0
B&R 2-0
B dry he wins 2-1
B&R 3-1

Set score 1-0 other guy breaks now

B&R 1-0
B&R 2-0
B&R 3-0

Set score 1-1 my break now

etc..... first to win 5 currently tied at 1-1.

I would love to play in that format. I think fans would get more interested with all the game points, more pressure points, break is more important, get to see both players B&R, more stats available etc.

you're kidding! tennis scoring is not good even for tennis.

Not enough new fans go to tournaments to see pool and pass what they saw on. Not enough pool fans go to tournaments. The few times pool is shown on TV the formats are boring to the ocaisional player. Hell, I think most of it's boring aside from TAR and a few finals matches on the stream.

Getting kids involved has to start at the JR high schools for the parents to come on board and support the kids. (buy cues, cases and such) Someone thats good with kids should open a pool room for 18 and under. Just pool. No video games or any game but pool. Lock them up with only pool tables and see if it takes off. If it does more will be opened.

For TV and new players maybe all offense is the way to go. Something like the ghost or Allen Hopkins Equal Ofense. I hate to say change the game but pool as it's played now doesn't get it for kids or new viewers that tune in to the sport. Kids that start off playing just ofence can move on to real pool as they get older or want to learn and play the real game.

Getting kids involved in pool is a hard nut to crack but they need a faster game to get them hooked IMO. Johnnyt

I think a Major's finals should be to 25+, maybe 3/5 races to 11, but for the early rounds, they gotta stay <15 to get the filler in there.

The couple of times I won the US Open and the DCC, I was damn happy those scrubs put their chickens in. No, wait. That never happened.
