Matchroom Sport in Talks to Sell Minority Stake Worth $215M

In my limited experience with having a big biz, mine was worth roughly $100M 20 years ago. So kinda small by comparison. I owned 50% to be clear.

We looked at different ideas/divisions on a loosely structured time line. We’d allocate X amount of $ and put the idea/division in motion and then mostly let it do it’s thing for a period of time.

After a period of time, we’d look at the numbers and see what results we had. If they were bad we’d usually let it go another cycle and then if still bad-either restructure or eliminate.

What it looks like to me is MR has the “pool division” up and going. They have empowered and hired all new staff. They need a couple cycles of numbers to look at them will make a decision.

Could go good or bad. But until they have numbers it will roll on for the time being.

That’s the normal course of biz. Some are more structured and formal than others. I can’t speak to MR’s structure. But it’s very unlikely that if the pool division is making $ it will get cut. If it’s a big loser-rip pool.

Time will tell,

If it holds up, for the love of God and my blood pressure I hope they correct the 5 ball.

PS: all jokes aside I hope for the very best for MR & pool.

Selling a 25% stake for a hefty profit is a good business move imo. MR still is the controlling shareholder and the investor is along for the ride. or until they increase their stake, which can always happen, particularly with a family run business that has been passed down a generation. By the third generation (Barry Hearn's grand kids) they may not own MR anymore. I doubt that Emily has any stake in anything. She is just an employee. I forsee either no change in MR's plan for pool or an increase in their involvement, depending on how they are doing with it. Others on here got that part right. If it's profitable you continue. If it's not you either pull up or pull back. I would suggest MR is making a commitment to pool for a period of time (maybe 3-5 years) to see what develops. Pool could see a real boom with increasingly larger purses (500K or more) or it could see the opposite, no more MR pool. It all depends on what size audience they can develop.

And 4 years later...they did sell 15% - sounds like a bit over $150M - to a US investment firm:

However - rather short shrift given to "9 Ball Pool" here's the only mention:
Sports investment firm Bruin Capital has bought into Matchroom Holdings, whose interests range from professional darts and boxing to snooker and pool, the companies said.

Meanwhile, Hearn:
“We want to make a massive push into America,” he added. “We’re going to take darts around the world, especially in America.”

Pyne, previously a key figure at sports agency IMG and Nascar, said: “Darts is global, snooker’s global, boxing’s global...Global events, great operators, I think this company is just getting started.”

If I might add to Skip100's superb post, I see things similarly.

I see a few possibilities:

1) The new minority owner will focus on the more visible sports and Matchroom pool may be ignored in the short term. Perhaps they will feel that their attentions belong elsewhere.

2) The new minority owner will, regardless of recent operating results, view pool as a good area for potential growth and will advocate greater investment by Matchroom Sports into Matchroom pool.

3) The new minority owner may advocate greater or lesser investment by Matchroom Sports into Matchroom Pool based on recent operating results.

One view that should not be taken here is that the infusion of new cash is certain to give Matchroom Pool a longer leash. Pool players once deluded themselves into believing that the riches of Kevin Trudeau ensured that the IPT would last for at least a few seasons. The reality among the best management teams is that they know exactly when to pull the plug on an underperforming venture.

In all probability, the proposed deal will help Matchroom Sports, but only time will tell whether it is good for Matchroom Pool.

Indeed. An infusion of new money may end up being a good thing for Matchroom Pool, but I doubt it. New stakeholders will start asking uncomfortable questions about the slower growing, lower profit generating, and less strategically important parts of a business.

Darts in particular seems like a much more promising potential avenue for investment.

The recent rise of the Ultimate Pool and Predator events and the refusal of top American players to participate in the UK Open won't help the cause.

a minor investor may, and likely, have no say in any decisions. or it may also have an option to purchase all. no one knows but the insiders.

If this deal goes through, then what do you think APA is worth? There's 250K members with annual dues of $30 and they play at LEAST once per week at $8/session. To be safe forty weeks X $8 ($2 for Corporate $6 for Franchise Holder) = I can't count that high...................

This right here is one of the main reasons why pool isn't as mainstream and big as people want it to be. Well said Skip.

Have to disagree here. The minority investor will almost certainly enjoy a seat on Matchroom Sport's Board of Directors, giving it both input and influence in the mapping out of the company's strategic direction.

Participation and live attendance won’t bring a profit by themselves. It’ll have to be televised or streamed to see a return AND/OR Live Gaming??
