Maybe this is one question that has never been asked.

I gambled on pool for about six months. After that I was wagering on my ability and I had enough cushion of past winnings to never look back from there!

I was playing a stranger one night. A tall cleancut fine looking young man. After a couple hours it was obvious he knew he was outclassed but he wouldn't pull up. He didn't say anything awkward but he seemed desperate somehow. Busted him clean down to his socks. By this time I had came to value people who would lose a good bit with good grace so I walked to the door with him talking. As we stepped out into the cold evening I saw a lady sitting in the one strange car. He had stopped to light a cigarette and smoke it facing the other way before facing the music. Maybe he was hoping for the walking stick that he was too proud to ask for. When I walked over to the passenger side of his car I saw the woman had a small baby on her shoulder, looked like she might be pregnant again. It was far too cold for them to be sitting in parking lots while her husband or boyfriend played pool.

I talked to her a little bit and gave a little advice that I knew wouldn't be heeded. I also gave her roughly half of the money I had taken over the pool table. I hadn't really done anything wrong but it sure felt like it. That wasn't the last time I gambled but that took a lot of the fun out of it. While I busted many people later, it never was by intent as it had been for several years before encountering this couple. A good hustler died in that parking lot that evening.

Mitch, good stories you posted while I was typing! Reminded me of something similar. Pickings were pretty lean at the moment on the poor side of town and I was still young enough to pass for a college kid or not much older. I headed over to the rich side of town. I found small action, enough to justify the trip with several people donating. When things had settled down a bit one asked if I would wait around while he called a cousin. "Sure" it was only about midnight or a bit earlier and somebody called in should be good for twenty a game or more.

His cousin wasn't happy to be rolled out of bed since he had to work an early shift the next day but the guy I had played talked him into coming get his money back and he no doubt told him I was toting a pretty thick wad.

I sat at the bar drinking a beer and chilling. When his cousin stepped in the door he took one look at me and started cussing the guy! The cousin knew me well from one of my usual haunts and we wouldn't be playing.

I don't gamble (99% level) because I don't want to take the other person's money.
I gambled on pool years ago and In my personnel opinion most pool games are not gambling its stealing.(Someone is stealing )
I now go to a Pool Hall where the young kids call me Coach because if they ask me a Question I try to help them. I also give Lessons for very reasonable rates . I would rather someone learn something for there money then to just take it . I like most of you have seen people get robbed without any gun. I have also learned If I win your money I feel bad but if you win mine I feel worse IMHO

99% of the time the game is won or lost before the the coin flip.

Better to have a fair game with everyone and play cheap that way you don't have to worry about nothing and always have a game when you walk in the pool room.

Best hustle is a 9 to 5.

people that put down gamblers are ones that know deep inside they dont have the nerve or ability to be a winner so need to put down those that do.
yet they gamble every day on things that dont involve money.

I agree to what you are saying, in theory. I have had fights over twenty-five cents. More trouble over five dollars or less, sometimes a lot less, bet than larger bets. I can't remember a problem over twenty a game or more. Very few even angry people and they were people that came in for a cheap bet and jacked it to twenty or fifty trying to hustle me. It was kinda funny in a way. Until the bet got right you never knew who was the hustler and who was the hustlee!

It’s always won or lost before the coin flip-that’s dead right, took me a while to figure that out.

Being gambler or not is like believe in 🎅, it a person choice.

My gambling is at local Indian casino. Twice a month they give Vets, $10.00 in slot play.

Last time I took advantage of offer, I play 50 Crnts, got a bonus.

When dust settle I cash out for $150.00, did not try and beat house. Many people do, they think the winning will not stop.

I put the money aside I win for something I wanted.

It's fun to put $5 on a game or a set for $20. My game isn't solid enough for much higher stakes, neither is my wallet. I would like to play for higher stakes but I need to work my way up.
That’s good that you are aware of that.

Play where you’re comfortable. And when you want to step up, understand it will be a bit uncomfortable for a little while. Then it won’t-when it’s not-that a sign of growth. Repeat.

Stepping up too high too fast is real bad.

Some guys I know get to a certain point and they are happy and stay in their comfort zone which is cool.

Main thing is have fun, know your goals and limits.

I played a $25/$50/$100 game of No Limit Texas Holdem 2 weeks ago. Nah, I don't gamble.

Years ago, I was a punk ass kid playing at a pool hall off Bears avenue in Tampa. This was before I ever had my own cue and I didn't even know what a safety was much less draw, follow, or any strategy at all. I put my quarters on the table and got in line to play. When it was my turn to play the guy I was to play got paid by the player before me. I tried to get him to bet me (it was like $5 a game) and he said no. I kept trying to get him to bet (I wanted to see how good I was). he would not engage the bet. The entire game, he toyed with me. he let me make several shots but I found myself hidden time and time again. Somehow it came down to my last ball and the eight ball. He would put the cue ball three to four rails off the eight and right back behind the eight where I couldn't see my ball. This was bar rules so no ball in hand. I realized he was playing with me. The next guy up and him started to bet. So I asked him why he wouldn't take my money? He said I wouldn't understand or something.

A few years later I found him on the message boards for USF (Go Bulls!) as Howie P. On the message board he had told stories of playing big time and having a heart attack during a tourney. I just now realized he might have posted on this board. A quick search and I now realize that Howie P is Howe Pearl. Huh. No wonder he could toy with me.
