McDermott cues hit like a 2x4?

Thanks for all the help guys!

I have 2 pool instructors by the way, and the other one told me that he does not recommend McDermott's becuase the metal pin screws into the wood shaft, so it will eventually strip. He said get something where it is metal on metal.

Is this True?

If you look at most of the custom cues even the high end ones they mostly have metal pins straight into the wood of the shaft. i think you instructor might know more about shooting pool than cues

I think it's southwest cues have a 8 ish year waiting list and a price rang of like 1500 and up and most if not all of their cues are as you described with the metal pin going straight into the shaft. i don't think people would be waiting that long to buy a cue for that much if it wasn't going to last a while. did you check these instructors refrences?

what kind of info are you looking for?

nice QP you have. ok, my question is simple, how would you rate your QP compared to other known brands (aside from QPs) ? I just need someone who can attest to it's quality and personal use. :) coz I might get one myself and I just want to make sure that it don't suck ! :) I base my cue standards from other persons recommendations ! tnx again !

The only thing that I think everyone is saying is that you need to try it and if YOU like it, then YOU should play with it.

If you were spending many hundreds or thousands of dollars on a cue and were worried about it stripping, then maybe that might be a consideration...but I have had McDermotts and I have never had any problems with any of them. Some say that the metal to wood makes the hit more 'pure' than a metal to metal...but again, its all opinion of the shooter.

I play with a Schon now...and I love the hit it gives me, but I have hit with serveral dozen other Schons and have not liked the hit as well as the one Im using...its all subjective.

You should really make your own choice. That is not the most help, but its the best advice that can really be given.

Good luck!

Thanks for all your help guys, it's nice to get this much response.

Umm, I think I forgot to mention that I was planning ordering it online, so that would mean I could not try it out before I buy it. I would like to know a place that I could try different cues, but I'm not sure where any places are. I live in Utah were there is like 3 pool halls total in the entire state.

Any suggestions?

this guys right i think you should give it a try. with wood being organic and no 2 pieces being alike the hit is really going to be determined by the player. if you go to a billiards store they might have a tester cue you could try first

This is absolutley incorrect, dont buy that for one minute. The best hitters i've ever hit are made that way.. 20+ years and no stripping.

Wow, I had no idea... I think I will try it out, that was kinda holding me back.

I've had 2 Southwest cues that I played with for four years each. Never stripped. I currently play with a Dan Dishaw with the same pin style that I've had since 1995, with four shafts, and have had none of the four strip.

Take a 2 x 4 with you and compare the two. If they both feel the same save your money and use a 2 x 4.

McD's have been around for a long time and many great players use them.

Haha, you guys make me laugh. I think my teacher may have over exaggerated just a little.

your teachers are just players where you play aren't they and not actual paid instructors?

I mean meucci cue's have a long history of poor service and workmanship from the mid 90's on. Mcdermotts have a long history of good service and workmanship for the last 20+years. I wouldn't buy either personally, unless it was a old d series mcdermott, or a old meucci without the script logo. Thats just my personal preference though. Cue's are like girlfriends, try them out if you like them you should keep them. If you don't get a new one.

They are paid instructors. The one that told me the Mcdermott hits like a 2x4 used to own a pool hall, so he is freakishly good!

Owning a pool room doesn't mean someone can play or teach. I've known a lot of owners who couldn't play a lick. What do you consider "freakishly good"?

Running the table almost every time, and when he's shooting the 8-ball he starts messing around and pulls a 3 cushion bank shot in a called pocket! He's not pro, buts he's the best I've seen in real life.
