Mcdermott cues

Well said, softshot...to tell the truth, I love my Keith Josey...but my McDermott is a good player as well.

(edit) I'll also confess there are people who post here who could beat me using a wal-mart cue...

HAHAHAHAH! O me. It is thy who ruffle the feather. My most sincere apologies go out to those who shoot with custom cues. I didnt mean it. Im just so sorry. I dont think anyone gets what im saying so lets just end this. NEXT!!!
PS. DID I MENTION I LOVE CUSTOM CUES? Or did that go unnoticed once again for the sake of someone being able to go off about why they use their custom? HMMM?? O yeah , NEXT!!!

btw, what exactly does it mean when someone says they had a cue made "one off?" btw jacoby ellsbury stole home straight up against the yanks tonight for anyone who cares!

not a Cubs or Cards fan?? American league ball (notice I didn't say baseball)...eeeewwww. J/K. Just wondering whereabouts you're located....??

One off, huh?

In the sense that I used it (with respect to a production cue)...
McDermott started my D21 thru the production line, and when the time came they pulled it off the line, took it to their custom shop, and added the mod's I'd requested. Then they sent it back into the production area for finish, wrap, etc.
The term "one off" is usually associated with one of a kind.

They did do a lot of custom work in the beginning. You could mix and match inlays, they made custom shafts, what ever wrap you wanted and so on. I had a pool room at the time and often just called in a custom orders and in like 6 weeks there was the cue just as the customer ordered it. They even made me one with a slimmer butt, no "Problemo". That was a really well run and efficient company. They didn't leap frog over everyone else by luck.

Ok this is gonna seem like a rant but not really. haha. Why does everyone always concentrate on the so called "custome" stick? I just dont see why mcdermott sticks dont get the recognition that they deserve. I mean when it comes to overall value and shooting, you cant beat them. you can send them back twice a yr for like 15 bucks a pop and get a practically brand new stick sent back. most of them have wood to wood flat face joints with a big pin (3/8 x 16) and thats what most look for in a player. man they shoot as good as any other custom out there imho but everyone concentrates on the custom cues, i guess primarily bc theyre harder to get their hands on. i dont know, it just seems like a no brainer to me. Is it bc mcdermott makes so many stick or what? anyone have any thoughts for me? is this just in my imagination?

The following is merely my opinion, but sharing it with others is the reason we are here I guess.

I have had a McDermott M1-1A 'Warden', a lower end cue, but I was saving up for it either...
What I didn't like in it was that it was way too flexible for my liking, it vibrated too much in the shaft after a shot with side spin. This is only compared to my personal preference and many must like McDermotts for the reason I don't!

On the other hand, I don't believe that pin pointing the big wood-to-wood pin isn't a good idea as there are hundreds of other options that affect the way a cue hits and it definitely isn't up to only the pin.

For example, I have not played with a better cue yet than my ex-cue, a Michael Capone cue with a Radial pin and sleeved ivory joint. It was awesome and a million miles away from my McDermott.

What makes the McD. the best choice is that it is customizable, that they care a lot more for the woods used than other brands and that they are built in the USA.

Overall, I like McDermotts and have nothing against them other than I personally don't prefer their feel.

I think it's important to realize the distinction between custom cues and handcrafted cues... Something can be "production" but still be very high quality, but just not carry the "custom" tag...

i think some may have missed the initial point. He is a fairly new guy here so lets do our best to answer his question. Which was why Production cues such as McDermott do not gett a lot of recognition. I deo not think he was trying to compare custom vs production. thats a no brainer. i just think he might shoot with a McD and wonder why they are not talked about as much. thats just my .02. I have no exp with McD so I can not answer but i think this may get some back on track. Correct me if I am wrong flowerpower

McDermott Cues

I own two McD's and love the way they hit and feel with the 3/8X10 wood to wood joints. Even my M2WW which is a 250.00 cue play's great with a Predator Z shaft on it!

For anyone out there that finds their McD is playing with a little to much flex.
Try adding a matching Predator Z or 314 shaft or possibly even McD's new I shafts or shafts with the new G Core Technology. I think you will find the playability goes way up!

Im not saying that the regular shafts that come with the cue are bad, in fact, I have kept both shafts for both my M2WW and my Dubliner. I float back and forth between shafts to get a feel for all of them.

I couldn't be happier with my cues and the company.

Have a great night. :)

anyone on this matter

Hi everyone. New to the forum, been around for awhile but this is my first post. My first cue ever was the d-23 in the picture. I played with that cue for fifteen years and I still love it. My main player now is the coco. Josey and it is just one sweet hitting cue. The other cues are an old Meucci sneaky pete, an old Joss and a Chris Whitaker cue.

i was just trying to point to the fact that every one of the smaller custom cue makers that sell for a couple thousand bucks have a few certain details that are mostly the same ie joint splice points hand inlaid blah blah. most of the larger companies dont offer cues liike those but my mcdermott is identical in every way to saaay...i dont know a bob runde or mike stacey. i was just pointing out that when people talk bout custom cues they dont mention mcdermott bc for the most part they are production but you can get a custom cue from them like i did last year thats the same stick. so you get a stick with all the aspects you want in a custom but made by one of the best "makers" in the world. and while mcdermott produces ALOT of lower end cues, if you think they dont make good sticks you need to look at the higher end sticks. i did so i knew their capabilities were beyond a backyard co so they made a custom and its soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo awesome hahahklhf;alsht;lqwkeh;dskjlfhg;sdgh;asltha;skjlgh;alshg;lajhr;gtlkhj****ldjsakl BY THE WAY I STARTED THIS SO YOU GUYS WOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO DO SO DONT ASK WHY I STARTED THIS NOW IM DIGGIN UP OLD BONES RARDY RAR RAR LAJDSF;LAJSDF;LAJSD****

I look at it this way.
Playing cue-Lucasi
Car- Older Ford Taurus
Both are cheap and that's what i can afford and both do the job they were meant to do.
Now if i had the means i would drive a Lexus and play with a custom made cue.
But that being said the fact that most production cues that are around $200 or so play as well as they do has to be one of the best values of any product made.

im a huge mcdermott fan as well. i shoot with a mcdermott tahoe, and use a mcdermott J/B.

btw, if any of you are interested i have a nice mid to late 70's mcdermott for sale in the wanted section that im taking offers on.

Looking for: Older, McDermott (Hustler) 2 Piece Bar Cue

August 22, 2011 - 6:25pm EDST

I am looking for a McDermott 2 piece Bar Cue called the Hustler. I have found some on line but, they seem to be a newer design than what I am looking for. The cues that are currently available have a "brass insert" for the screw. The cue that I am looking for didn't have the "brass insert". I seem to recall that they were made back in the mid to late "70's and early '80's. If anyone can help me with my search, please contact me at my e-mail address; tuf8seconds@yahoo.com. I dont usually have the ability to come on line and check this forum so, posting it here would not make it to me. Thanks in advance for everyones help.
