McDermott I3 shaft question

I'm looking at an I3 shaft locally, ( only pics so far ) and i have a question. My understanding is that the I series has a short 1/4 inch furrel. This one has what looks like a 1 inch furrel on it. Also, from the pictures I can't tell if the I3 icon is blue or black. It should be blue but it almost looks black. Are there older versions of these shafts that were not color coded?







 
I had an I3 a few months ago. The ferrule was short, the icon was black, but the threading on the inside of the shaft was blue. I've seen different joints and custom joint collars, but i've never seen a longer ferrule on one.

I bought an I3 the first month they came out a few years ago. My dealer also bought some I-2's and I-1's at the same time.

I am 100% certain in the cues we got, the I-3 had a very short ferrule, about .25 inch. The I-2 and I-1 had longer ferrules. I think they were 1 inch long.

I later saw an I-2 made a year or so later. It now had a short ferrule. I don't remember if it was as short as the I-3, but it was definitely very short.

So in summary, the I-3 always had a very short ferrule.
The I-2 started with a long ferrule, and then progressed to a short ferrule.
The I-1 started with a long ferrule, I have no information where it progressed to.

I actually don't think that's true. Almost certain that I saw an original long ferrule I-3 for sale on ebay - in fact I might have even put in a bid on it. At any rate I agree with the earlier post that you should just call McDermott.

As far as color coding goes, I know that the I shafts vary GREATLY in this department depending on when they were produced. For example, the I-2 that I own has a green logo on the shaft with patent pending information and a black insert. The newest shafts are the ones you see on the website, with the color coded insert - I don't know about the logo coloring though.

If you're concerned with the shaft's playability, I'm pretty sure that there's a reason why McDermott decided to shorten the ferrule of the I-shafts. However, that's not to say that it's necessarily an upgrade for you (eg. some people prefer the pre-cat 314 to the newer ones). Since it's local, why don't you just shoot a few balls with it to see if it works for you? :thumbup:
 
Found Jayme's email address and sent in the question to him about the ferrul length on the i-shafts. Thought I would share his reply. Thanks for the input as well! :)


Our first generation i-shafts were made with our standard 1 1/8" ferrule length for about 6 months.
