Mcdermott question

I have an old mcdermott cue. I took it out for the first time in, I don't know how long.
The bumper has a white waxy substance on it. I can scratch it off a bit with my nail.
I am wondering what it is and the best way to clean it off.

While scraping it off the bumper fell off.
I thought there should be a weight screw behind it. But it looks like some sort of wax, is that right? What about changing the weight bolt.?
Any ideas on the best way to get it back on?

It came apart. Need a new one. They are press fit. http://www.mcdermottcue.com/billiard_accessories.php Just pry out whats left.

Some of Mcdermotts older bumpers were nearly impossible to pull out. their shape would allow your hands to slip off. I had a customer who chingered his bumper up with pliers trying to remove it and wanted a new one. I ordered several from Muellers but the new bumpers were a different compound, more plastic like and not as soft. The new bumper was not as tight but felt worse in my opinion. I always wondered if the new ones might have been from another company?

There was a special tool developed for removing those MCDermott bumpers. It fit around the tapered belly of the bumper. Many of the bumpers turned white over time in various climate situations. Part of your bumper is still inside the cue butt - it is not wax. The cue butt needs to be cleaned out completely of the old bumper remnants. I would consult McDermott as to the correct replacement bumper and the proper reinstall.

lifetime warranty so you can send it back.

McD had a issue where the bumper was the wrong material /shape and would rattle or fall out.

I have reached out to mcdermott to ask how to remove the rest of the material.
waiting to hear back.
I really didnt want to send the cue back for a bumper.
anyone have any ideas how to remove it?
the material is wax like i can scrape some off with my fingernail.
the cue is probably 15-20 year old. rarely used. new condition.
I took it out to show my son.

I have seen a 1996 cue made by them that had a very similar problem. Cleaned out the waxy stuff and replaced the bumper.

This won't help the OP, but I use pliers to remove McD bumpers.
Just do not use the business end, use the handles to squeeze the bumper.
Rubber coated handles offer better protection against scarring.
