I am thinking about upgrading my cue shaft from McDermott Standard Shaft to G-Core, I would like to listen to your advice.


Those who have ever played with BOTH McDermott Standard Shaft and G-Core Shaft, which one do you like the most??

Thanks Calgaryplayer, I have a buddy who is entrusting me to buy the right shaft for him;). I just about started this thread this morning. I found some info by using the search function but maybe more players have tried the g-core lately. The price seems more then fair and a few of the members are real high on them.

Cuebuddy...Yep, and I'm one of them. IMO, the G-Core plays as well as (better imo) than Predator, OB, Tiger, etc. I LOVE mine...but when I first got it I hated it. Now I wouldn't trade it for anything...been playing with it every day now for 15 months.

For the price of the shaft it really cant hurt it just blind buy it. If you prefer the standard shaft at least you have an extra shaft eh? Thats how i think about it since its pretty cheap. You can always sell it to the people who are high on them too or curious about the G core.

Just wondering if anyone knows how far down till you hit the carbon fibre?

Im thinking about turning my G core into a snooker shaft LOL. Is this a bad idea? (13mm btw)
 
You can hit farther out on the edge of the CB without getting vibration at the end of the cue shaft. It's definitely stiffer than the standard shaft and gives you the sense that the ball is going to go where you hit it without deflection/squirt.

Definitely worth the money, and McDermott will retip it twice a year if you send it in to them.

I have both and I like the G-Core better. One thing I found that you might want to consider. I have an older McDermott from 1995, an MG01 with 3/8x10, and the new G-core shaft I have will not thread on easily. It is impossible to thread them on right now with central Texas humidity being the way it is. I can only put it on about halfway before it is so tight that I am afraid to turn it any more. It is as if the older 3/8x10 joint is just slightly larger than the current ones. All my shafts fit on my new Dubliner but the old standard shaft feels just a little loose until you get it all the way on. I would definitely try out the particular shaft you are going to buy on your cue before purchase, or make sure they have a good return policy. Of course you can send the butt to McDermott and I am sure they will make sure the fit is perfect.

Thats great Scott, I new you were one of the guys that liked the g-core. I am wondering what the chances of the new shaft matching up with the butt section and being the same dimension. The joint collar mic's out at
.850, I have not been able to find out the size if the joint collar of the
g-core. I have not contacted McDermott yet.
Just out of curiosity what did you not like when you first got the new shaft?
 
Hey Cuebudy, I just took the dial calipers to both of my GCore shafts and the one that came with the Dubliner was .855 and the off the shelf one was .846. The difference is not that noticeable when the shafts are on the cue. You have to really look close at the joint to see the lip when the smaller shaft is on it.
 
Jim...I was given the shaft by Jerry Powers as a prototype to "try it out and see what I think...good, bad, or indifferent". Jerry gave me the small shaft, even though I protested that I didn't like small shafts...and I especially didn't care for LD shafts. LOL He said, "Try it, you'll like it!" LOL again. I told him I'd use it for 100 hrs and give him a report. After 20 hrs I hated it...HATED it! That said, I'd promised I'd use it for 100 hrs and give a report...so I did. By the time I'd spent that much time (about 3 months), my feelings were completely reversed...and now you couldn't pry it out of my 'cold dead hands'! :grin: For me, the G-Core is the total nuts! :thumbup:

Thanks for the measurement it helps a lot. You are correct feeling 4 or 5 thousandths of an inch is not that easy.

Thanks again Scott that is about the same thing that happened to me and my Predator that I have been using for about 7 years.

there is a loacl dearer selling Mcdermott cues here, a good news to me.
 
No matter what, you'll find that the gcore hits pretty stiff. I've got one on an old D-16 and I like it very much. I'd say that an old mcd shaft hits as well, but you really need a better ferrule to get there. Something like a paper based Micarta. Hits well, but much, much different. Very much softer and a touch more deflection.

Check out their website, under lifetime maintenance plan. There is an address and details about what they do for the $21.95 shipping and handling fee. The G core will gete retipped with the everest it comes standard with and Jayme is quick to answer emails and knows what the term "customer service" means.

I will own McDermotts because of the way they hit, but just as importantly for the way the company excells at customer service and communication.

I have tried the following shafts for my McDermott.

1. Standard Shaft.
2. G-Core Shaft.
3. I-3 Shaft.
4. OB Classic Shaft.

Personally, I think if your going to spend the cash on a 'low deflection shaft' go all the way and get an OB shaft. They have 4 different styles to choose from now and they are far superior in every way, IMHO.
 
i have an early 90's mcD along with several other newer models. and i have an i-2 for my 90's model. never used the g-core but would consider trying it. the i-2 took me a long while to get used to but now i love it. i had carolina cue redo the collar to match the butt and it looks and plays great and consistent.
 
Personally, if I wanted to get a G core, I would just buy a cue that comes with a G core shaft and swap the standard shaft I had on my nicer cue onto the cheaper McD butt. That way you end up with 2 complete cues instead of 1 cue with a spare original shaft for only about $100 more. Some of the lower end McD's that come with G-core are only about $240.
