I found a lathe listed locally. The info provided is this Metal lathe (Materials & Tools)
13" swing 40" bed some new parts new tools converted to v-belt asking 800 o.b.o. trade for?

It seems like a good deal but what would i need to look for to determine if it is usable for cue making? I don't have plans in the near future to make cues but it seems like a good deal and i have some extra cash right now.

Thanks

Mainly the threw hole in the headstock. You would ideally like it to be 1 1/2 inches. Make sure the ways are not really marked up and the carrige works properly....Just a few things to look for...Dave

What brand & if possible model # is the lathe. I believe South Bend 13" and up are all at least 1 3/8 threw hole. Most usually are when you get to the 13"+ range.

The omonous phrase 'converted to v-belt' indicates this was
a flat-belt lathe, likely weighs a gazillion pounds and is older than
John McCain, I would be leary - if you have to ask this question,
this is probably not the deal for you.

BTW - 40 inch BED probably means it is 24 in between centers, or less.

You're right it is a cast iron dinosaur but you are wrong about a 40" bed they usually will allow 32-34 inches between a chuck and the tailstock. 40" with collets.
