I've got a local player who wants me to replace a cracked ferrule on an older Meucci......what type of material does Bob use???

I have a couple PVC ferrules that look similar -- just not sure  if they would change the hit!?

I've been using the IVORY SUBSTATUTE from ATLAS for years. It is the closest, that I've found. As for the PVC it will probably play very similar, but is a different color...JER

I always thought he used cheap PVC ferrules. I had a predot shaft that the ferrule cracked on and I decided to replace with PVC because I was scared it would change the hit. Meullers replaced it and I had a softer tip put on (Moori soft compared to Meucci's choice of LePro Medium) and the shaft hits better than it did before.

meucci ferrules are the worst. the cue will play better with a 1'' capped ferrule. iove dont a hundred and the players liked them better everytime

Me too, Also the closest I have found without changing the hit & feel too much. Most customers adapt very easily to It.

As a repairman, you are intrusted with your customer's cue. What he gives you is HIS Meucci, Joss, Mali or Hercek. What he wants back from you, is a repair that gives him the same hit & look as he had in that Q, when new. It's not your job to decide, that his Q would play better if it were 1/4" shorter or to have a harder hit. Your JOB as a repairman, is to give him a repair that simulates the ORIGINAL. If you took your Buick into a body shop with a crumpled fender & it came out with a brand new Olds fender, you would be pissed. SHOW THAT SAME RESPECT to your Q customers. They don't care what YOU think is better. They want, what they HAD BEFORE YOU GOT IT...JER

Cue repair

I always thought that Atlas' MP substitute stood for Atlas Meucci Product substitute to keep from patent infringement. I have used it for years and give the customer the same playing characteristics he/she had before the repair. If they want different materials, I will give them what they ask for or tell them I can't. If they ask and my opinion is different from theirs I give them my reasons for my opinion and let them decide.

I bought some from Chris Hightower. I think you'll find them on his site.

I've also done a few replacements over the years with the ferrules that Chris sells and everyone has always been happy with the product/result.

thank you for your undressing. im sure it was called for. reguardless i make the customer fully aware i dont carry replacement ferrules for meuccis never have never will. just because they make a bazillion cues a day doesnt mean its right. out of the 4 cues mentioned you are standing up for the worst quality possible. thanks for detailing my JOB description.

to touch on your analogy. when i built my chevelle i was suprised to find the buick skylark fender from the same model year was the same fender used on the chevelle. so if you ask would i be pissed then answer is no i wouldnt... because it is the same

you couldnt have been more wrong in your statement. 100%. most customers have little or no clue about materials used with the exception of ivory/non ivory. most have to ask the one that is repairing for thier OPINION on what needs done. therefore it is my JOB. they absolutely do care what I think is better or they wouldnt ask.

as my boss, anytime you feel like sending me a paycheck for my work feel free. i will pm you my address...dave

I have some of the Meucci Ferrules if you need them. The trouble is, I may not be able to get them to you for a couple of weeks as I'm leaving early tomorrow morning for a trip and won't get home tonight until it's too late to go to the post office.

Must be that time of the month, everyone has been extra touchy lately. I don't think blackheart was trying to be a dick, but instead pointing out that the OP was asking for a replacement meucci ferrule and several gave him 'this would produce a better hit...' type responses. Maybe his customer came to him for the repair and specifically asked to get the repair done with something that produced the same exact response and feel. If so, his question is warranted and the 'this X material will produce a better hit' type responses, while although gives some good information, gives information that in this situation is useless...

Thanks for the repsonses!

Hi Guys,

Yeah, this player loves his Meucci and has played with it for a long time.....and he plays very well with it to boot! :D  ;)

I want to replace the ferrule with the same type of material if that is possible :)

Thanks,

Ken ;)

just as an fyi, meucci cues have used 4-5 different ferrule materials as stated in the FAQs section of thier website. they include: Implex, PVC, ABS, and thier current proprietary material.

http://www.meuccicues.com/faq.htm

Chris supplies one that he advertises as Meucci original, i picked up a bag of those and they are a darker cream color, but he doesnt state which material it is though it looked very similar to a PCV ferrule i had installed by muellers, so so i would venture to guess his is PVC or Implex. i also purchased some ABS from prathers and it is a creamy translucent color.

Good point Jer but I'd tell the client Meucci's ferrules is notorious for breaking at the bottom.
There is too much stress on that bottom.
The soft ferrule is press-fitted witn maybe 3-5 glue rings around the tenon.
The cap does not touch the top of the tenon ( pretty far on the new ones even ).
I'd let him shoot with a threaded melamine or Ivor-X and ask his opinion on the hit.
Those you can guarantee to be much more durable.
Joss, Mali or Hercek ferrules should last forever unless gouged or really abused with thin tips.

Cuestix International out of Denver sells replacement Meucci ferules. Also Porper sells an 1 1/4 inch capped ferule that you can bore out which is very similar.
