micarta from Mason

i didn't realize the micarta police were so strict aorund here.i once again assure everyone who has purchased it that it is "true micarta",whatever that means.i guess this guy wants me to divulge the source and how it's made and how to get it,but i won't.

Socks,if i wanted your business i would have sent you a PM that had some prices for different amounts of micarta.i don't really need business from someone like you.i spemt close to 6 months dealing with salesmen, technical guys and different plastic sompanies trying to get the stuff and get it made right.it was extremely difficult and i had to sned numerous samples of "old yellow" and some saples of new yellow micarta in to get the right stuff.

"he advertised a product as micarta never stateing if it was true "micarta"

that really doesn't make much sense, but when i advertised the stuff as micarta, that is when i said it was true micarta.

i know you are going crazy trying to find which one of the products it is at their website right now,but don't worry it's not there at the website,it was custom order.

"frankly, i'm disgusted that im the one being flamed"

who should be getting flamed?you made some rude insinuating comments and are trying to make me divulge my sources for the stuff.no wonder you are getting flamed.

manufactured by norplex-micarta. i ask if it is, and it is, great fine no harm no foul. instead of a nice simple answer of "yes" i'm issued back a rude pm as if i divulged some industry secret that this is a trademarked material that any monkey could figure out came from norplex. and if the answer was "no"? noone sees the dishonesty that would have existed had that been the case? i'm glad i brought this up. this whole thread, except for eric's original post starting it, which again i appologise for using this one, just further's manwon's points.

i'll even offer up a cookie to anyone that can figure out which of thier 100 or so products listed on thier website is the one he's using.

To know the man, one would realize he's not the type to be intentionally missleading, or dishonest. You basically, publicly, called his integrity into question, were as it could have (and IMO, should've) been done with a little more tack and privately. If at that time he was rude and such, then you would be justified responding as you did. Just turn the table around and ask yourself how you would have reacted if you developed something for the benifit of others, and had time and money invested, then someone publicly called your integrity into question, How would you respond? Unless you in some way work for that company, I don't see why it concerned you so much., In your first post, you actually sound offended so much by his use of the word micarta, one would think you owned the copyright.
I'm sure he has a good sum of money tied up in this, the stuff isn't off-the shelf material, and companies won't make a small sample batch for free. Usually there are a few batches made with tweaking in between and a considerable cost involved, and he sure doesn't need someone of your 'caliber' mucking it up for him

Dave

"the deceptive nature of your comments to associate this material to the old westinghouse manufactured micarta is exactly the unexeptable behavior that has been being discussed recently on this forum. I was not in the slightest bit rude in my informative post above, but your following PM to me was rude and was. you are the only one here out of line."

i just read this, missed it earlier.in what way did i associate this stuff with the old stuff?what unacceptable behavior was a iresponsible for.if you ask me what you have done in this thread is unacceptable.

the Pm might have been slightly rude not unlike you original post, but out of line i don't think so.in fact i took extra care not to say what i reall felt in that PM.

thanks Dave, you nailed it.i have tons of time and money invested and i wanted to make a small profit on the first batch.it really is pretty cheap.the 3 feet price is less than $3 per ferrule shipped.after the initial investment was recouped i was going to drop the price to about $30 a foot shipped.anyway, thanks for all of the orders guys and stick with mw,the price will be cut almost in half on my next batch.

By the way, if anybody wants any genuine, asbestos base, old yellow micarta., I've got all you could ever want for 100.00 per ferrule.

Dick

Dick, is that price still good if I need a ferrule for a 4" tenon?:) We talked on the phone years ago, and I still get a chuckle when I recall your story about measuring the micarta block wrong, thus practically giving it away when you sold it.

If the micarta ferrules you have are the deep, deep yellow-almost orange-I would be interested in acquiring some.

Hey Mason, I don't think you'll have a problem with us sticking with you on this. Hopefully, you can get some rod done in the future and even in larger sizes. You've stepped out on a limb to provide a product for us that is like something from the past but better in many ways. As valued as the old Micarta is I really don't want it. The fruit on that limb you stepped out on is "as far as I'm concerned" YOURS. I appreciate your efforts.

Thanks, Ray

no where in any of my posts have i used the words "new" or "old" to make any comparison. your the one who has used these adjictives. i made no referance to anylikeness of you're particular flavor of micarta to the asbestos based version produced in the 40's. others adding comments have. i simply made referance to the name micarta being used.

i only brought it up because, like so many others on this forum, i am sick and tired of being lied to by jerks like you that are out to make a buck for them selves regardless of who they step on on the way.

frankly i dont care what materials and content are used in its manufactureing

i am standing up for all the uninformed users on this forum, that simply here the word micarta and make the inferance that this is anything like or is the same product manufactured years ago by the same company.

you can call keep calling me an asshole all day and night, why keep it to pms, share share with everyone else how offended you are by my apparent challange to your integrity.

you have chosen to do business in a public forum, as such you will face the scrutiny of the public.

2. Intentionally offering items for sale with inaccurate Descriptions Again during the time frame this has become more and more of an issue. Sometimes, it just an honest mistake due to a persons lack of knowledge on the subject. However, there are also those who have been intentionally misrepresenting items for sale or trade.

that is exactly what i saw this product leading to. i dont know you from a hole in the wall. so i stepped forward. sure i could of kept it to PM, but again, this is a public forum and not only did and do i have the right to know, so does the rest of the AZB population. for this reason, i asked my question publicly. crucify me all you like for it. its not going to change a damn thing.

as i can see now, noone is allowed to ask a question in order to be a more informed consumer. maybe we can go back to the days of monoplies and sweat shops where the consumer has no protection and we can all be scammed relentlessly on ebay and through paypal and spend thousands of dollars on cheap chinese imports not worth a nickle. won't that be dandy. so come on. keep the bad reps and vulger insults coming.

Thanks for the review Eric.

I have already made an inquiry to a cuemaker friend to possibly give it a whirl.

Much appreciated,
Koop - doesn't care what it's called as long as it hits em nice.

Mason,

No worries on this thread. The way I see it, someone like Eric endorses your product, that's good enough for me. Best of luck with it.

Fellows, let it go. There's no more that can come of this but bad. It is what it is & nobody is going to change it. Apparently it is indeed a true micarta produced by the company who owns the micarta name. Micarta is a plastic that gets combined with a base material such as fiber, linen, canvas or paper to produce a particular material. It's in the same type as fiberglass resin or phenolic. It's the plastic component of the end product.

If everybody relates "micarta" to the old yellow paper ferrules that were popular in past years, then it is them that is misinformed or not informed at all. It's no fault of anybody. There must be 100 or more micarta based materials that are in fact true micarta. Again, it's an ingredient not an actual end product. In this case the material may should be called linen base micarta to avoid confusion. But again, there's no harm or wrong in simply calling it micarta because that is what it is. Just like linen phenolic, cancas phenolic & paper phenolic are all called phenolic but are all totally different. It's cracker jacks at this point.

Let bye gones be bye gones & end this. People got hurt feelings & made enemies over what? A plastic name? There's no need for the bitterness. Misunderstandings are human.

And where are those uninformed users?
Nobody has complained yet but you.
Dale Pierce asked Mason if it was asbestos micarta.
Mason said no.
Now, $30 a foot? Free samples to a few makers for review.
Who got scammed?

Hey, didn't Westinghouse and Formica go to court in dispute over the patent?

Asking questions is fine, it's all in how you ask them. Wanting to be informed is great, but doesn't give you the right to insult people. Resorting to calling him a jerk is just plain childish. Calling him a liar....that just wrong, as he hasn't lied. Just like you said, it's a public forum, and just as much as you have the right to say what you said, we have the same right to disagree, and stand up for a standup guy such as Mason. You can say all you want about standing up for the Un-informed AZ'rs, but in this whole deal, you've only done 2 things, (IMO) 1) shown that you are one of the un-informed, and 2) only given the forum more of a black eye due to your apparent disregard for a persons established reputation. As stated, nothing can change what has taken place, and nothing can change the opinions that have now been formed, on both sides. But remember, it's a 2 edged sword, I believe that Mason's rep will hold firm with those of us that know him and have dealt with him, but your rep has now been established also, and may not fair as well, considering you called someone's integrity into question, without ever even dealing with him and without a shred of proof to even suggest an impropriatey. You made an apparently rash opinion that he may not be truthfull, then called him out. He's been here more than twice as long as you, and until this, has never had his integrity brought under this kind of light, instead, he has a well earned, positive rep. My suggestion, and I mean this in a non hostile way, no offense meant, is to leave the cuemaker's area to the cuemakers and let them worry about the copyright infringments etc. as this is their business.

Hey socks....

You are really showing your ass! And the only apology in order is for your spelling! IMO ;)

Joey, the $30 per foot price will be later.the next batch or the one after will come down in price.i am still trying to recoup my initial investment.i was just letting the cuemakers know that it will be cheap enough to really use on a regular basis eventually.for now it is still $50 per foot unless you buy 3 feet.

on another note,i am getting slammed with orders,i guess Socks actually got the ball rolling instead of stopping it.i want to reiterate that the ferrules all have a .250" hole in the middle,so if you can't live without a cap, then you might not want these ferrules.i know there are many great cuemakers using both style of ferrule, capped or wood through.i myself like the wood to go through and touch the tip.i think it gives better feel.so that is how the ferrules were made.

i have mentioned this once or twice in the threads but i don't know if it got mentioned in this thread.if you only do capped, you might want to just try this out without a cap.it really has a nice hit and the playability is excellent.i honestly feel it beats the old yellow stuff in every way.
