I know this won't make the smokers happy. As of May 1st bars and resturants in Mich are smoke free. I hate coming home from pool league smelling like stale smoke. I do feel for my smoking bretheren (spelling?). I have many friends that smoke.

If it's like Ohio's smoke free law it won't stop the bars from allowing the patrons from smoking. I was happy when I thought I could go into a bar during my league nights and not smell like an ashtray when I got home. But, nothing has changed and I still have to change clothes in the garage before my wife will let me in the house due to all the smoke on my clothes.

Sorry to hear that Joe. My wife doesn't mind but I start to notice it when I get home. I hope they will enforce the law.

We haven't had that problem here in Maine, so maybe it'll be ok in Michigan. I don't remember seeing smoking anywhere in a bar or resturaunt after the ban went into effect, tho I'm sure it probably has happened. I go to a lot of different places, and I've never seen it, and we've had the ban in effect for many years now.

Most places here have created fenced-in outdoor smokers areas, some quite elaborate with heating and shelter from the wind.

People adapt. They will in Michigan, too.

awesome, to me second hand smoke is highly irritating to put it mildly anyways how do you actually enforce such a great idea ?

I don't know the specifics, but I would assume anyone caught violating the ordinance would be subject to fines, and/or difficulties maintaining licensing, either for food service licenses and/or liqour licenses.

Then again, Google is our friend.

"§1545. Penalty
A person who violates any provision of this chapter commits a civil violation for which a fine of $100 may be adjudged, except that a fine of up to $1,500 may be adjudged for each violation of this chapter in cases when a person engages in a pattern of conduct that demonstrates a lack of good faith in complying with this chapter. [2005, c. 257, §7 (AMD).]"

I suppose if it's worth $1500 per visit from the Constabulary to let your patrons smoke, you could do so. At least here in Maine.

Google isn't as helpful re Michigans ordinance.

"What are the specific penalties for violating the smoke free law?
Information regarding the specific penalties for violations of the law will be posted at a later date."

I would expect that it would probably be similar to what we have here in Maine, though anything is possible.

Good for Michigan! The poolrooms you guys have now? 40% of them will be closed or on their last leg within 5 years. Congrats! Another great day for pool...

To follow that line of thinking, Maines smoking ordinances went into effect in 2004.

By my poor math skills, that is over 6 years now. We managed to get past that 5-year mark quite nicely.

We have more bars and resturaunts than we ever have had. And the same number of places to play pool, give or take one room now and again.

The sky isn't falling. But the air sure is cleaner indoors.

Joe,

Give some time ... or someone just need to report that bar. Couple times getting busted with fines and penalty to close business will shape them right up.

I used to live in Indiana and certain pool hall used to violate the no smoking law but they came around after couple tips to the authorities.

Hang in there ;)

File an anonomous complaint. After a fine or three the owner will get the message. If a poolroom owner can't adapt, they shouldn't be in business.

Short run will be tough for businesses. Long run will mean more customers and more money. Time to bring in those nonsmoking friends you have that never wanted to come before because of allegies/asthma/smell .

Yeah, because ONE bar isn't abiding, don't just go to any of the other bars that are non-smoking, make SURE you report them! DON'T let that business owner run his establishment the way he sees fit! Be a good little...... and report him to your fuhrer!

I don't think they just bust an establishment from just a report. They actually come out and raid them. Have to be proved of guilty act. If not, any unhappy drunk who got kicked out from acting a fool would try to close down a bar.

Yeah, all you people applauding another stupid new law. Welcome to communist america! First day of the law here in Mi, and in the paper today is an article of how they now want to make it illegal to smoke in your home if you have any pets! New York is trying to ban salt added to foods, as is another state.

You people asked for it, and wanted it... have fun living with the consequences in the future. The America I grew up in is long gone.:frown::mad:

stupid my ass, smoking is nasty and i shouldn't have to breath that crap in an enclosed enviornment /

You never had to in the past now did you?

Do you expect me to believe that you were forced to enter a place of business where smoking was allowed?

What's that?

You didn't like the fact that they were doing something didn't like so, it's OK for them to be forced to comply with your will ... even though you don't own the property and paid no more for services than any other customer?

Do I have understand you correctly?

It never ceases to amaze me how readily so many people will welcome tyranny.

–noun,plural-nies.
1.
arbitrary or unrestrained exercise of power; despotic abuse of authority.
2.
the government or rule of a tyrant or absolute ruler.
3.
a state ruled by a tyrant or absolute ruler.
4.
oppressive or unjustly severe government on the part of any ruler.
5.
undue severity or harshness.
6.
a tyrannical act or proceeding.

So protecting the population from the adverse health affects of smoking is now "undue severity or harshness"? Meaning that those who do not wish to breathe VERY HARMFUL CARCINOGENS. As I always say when this argument rears its ugly head, if YOU want to smoke and harm yourself, that is fine, I do not begrudge you your personal liberty regarding smoking. I do not understand why you cannot afford me the same choice if I choose NOT to breathe cigarette smoke. And before you start with the tired old argument "don't want to be around smoke then LEAVE, why do I have to leave? When you can very simply go outside and get your nicotine fix, and then return to the building with those who do not wish to smoke or breathe your smoke.

It is an extremely selfish viewpoint. "My way or the highway." "I'm gonna do what I want and if you don't like it, too bad." "I don't care if it hurts you and makes you smell, even if you don't want to smell like this, it's my choice, dammit." Very petulant, like children who can't get their way. Selfish.

Not tyrannical.

For the record, I feel bad for smokers and their need to smoke. The nicotine is insidious. I do not begrudge you your need to smoke. PLEASE do not force me to breathe your smoke and smell like your smoke and we can get along really well. I'll wait for you to get your smoke in, and won't complain. Really. I understand your need.

Actually I WAS forced to attend elementary school, middle school, and high school by law and was exposed to asbestos the whole time. So it does happen.

10 years after I graduated it was determined too dangerous and the school district had it all removed. When I attended...they told you to cover your mouth with your hand when passing the asbestos that was falling off the pipes and laying in piles. It was almost as absurd as duck and cover days.
