Midnight Madness made me a bit ill

I went to the Music city open as my first big tourney yesterday. I watched some great 9 ball. I watch Nick Hickerson (sp) run a 7 racks in one match and win his next match on the hill. Then come midnight madness he runs 8 for a 11-2 win. Now he comes up against Larry Nevel who is playing very strong and gets down 9-4 or 9-5 and comes back to win 11-9.

Now my rump has went from killing me to numb and back a dozen times sitting on the hard bleachers.

Then Archer and Nick take a break before getting started. Nick comes back and someone ask him whats up. Nick says him and Archer chopped up the 4k and are going to play it out because of the Calcutta.

Now once the money is not riding on it the game, in my mind it is a different animal altogether. I sat all this time to watch 2 great players not have enough faith in themselves to play for cheese. I got up and drove home without watching them put on the show.

I felt cheated

eh, I see what you are saying, but in their shoes, I get it. It's not like these guys earn millions on a pro tour. They are (and will be for the foreseeable future) in a position where it just makes sense to secure money for yourself when you can. It's not about faith in yourself, it's about making a smart choice to earn a living.

There lies the problem. They want pool to get bigger and in turn make more money themselves but everyone is to worried about getting paid rather than being the best. You can never build a true fan base when the final is just a show. Might as well make it the WWE.

its their job when ur not guaranteed aa pay day wat would u do..... now dumping when ur gambling i totally disagree

thats' not dumping. It is called survival.
Very few in the pool world gives a rats ass about the fans. In fact few in the business give crap about pool period.
To take it one stop further if it weren't for the streaming nobody would be talking about this at all. Lets face it, if there were a fan base pool would be on TV and there would be money behind it. NOT TV< NO MONEY< NO PRO TOUR!!!
WHY??? Because there is no fan base. Hell even the streamers are very guarded about the numbers!!

Is the reason for this because there is so little money? If the pot was large would this activity become less likely to happen?

8Up It was a pleasure to meet a fellow AZ'r. I hope the pretty girls sitting around me didn't cause your butt to go numb. LOL

Yeah Joe it was tough but without your fine stable it would have been worse.

I would rather watch a bad Earl match than see it chopped.

This a great example of why there is no pool on TV. Can you see this being on ESPN and someone lets it out of the bag that they are chopping the pot. Yea its what they do for a living, but they chose this way of life. Have a little heart.................just sayin

Surprised

The calcutta buyers did not chop up the money as well? both the players probably went for about the same in the event. Do not know, I was not there.

I have no idea if the buyers chopped. Not sure what Nick sold for but I bet it wasn't the same as archer.

lots of things seemed strange too but I figured that was just because it was my first big tournament.

I would have no problem with a saver. Say loser gets $1000, winner $3000. But chopping effects the calcutta buyers. Now if the calcutta buyers were in the loop and agreed to a split, well, noone is getting hurt. Except maybe the fan if it's obvious from their play that it's a chop.

I read years ago that the reason for the bad blood between Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus was a play off between the two when Jack was young. Palmer offered to 'chop' adn Jack refused. Arnold thought at the time he was being generous. Jack went on to win his first U>S. Open and it created anamosity between the two for years. Chopping just makes sense in certain spots.

its just the way it works. there is so little $$$ in pool "savers" happen all the time. Thats just part of the deal and when you buy a top player you have to figure that in. If you dont ya shouldnt be buying big names. And the lower the $$$ gets the more "deals" will happen, thats not what ruined pool, thats a result of a ruined game.

Savers and a fifty/fifty chop are different things. If I have one of the finalists in the calcutta, a saver doesn't bother me, but I certainly want to know about a 50/50 chop.

Exactly punter a saver and chopped are totally different.

Archer was sponsored in it by JOB's owner who also paid at least 50% of Josh Oneil entry. He then bought Larry Nevel in the calcutta. He had his bases covered.

Now Hennesee and Josh had words during their match just before the midnight madness. Then they drew each other in the MM and Josh beat him pretty well had him down 10-2 at one point and ended 11-5 or 6. This caused a stir by when someone said thats how we do it in Gallatin. Hennesee took offense and there were words for a bit between the guy and Henessee but Josh tried to diffuse it which I thought showed some class.

Now this puts Josh against Archer in the next match. Archer wins very lopsided while Josh mostly sits but doesn't really show disappointment when its over. He then gets a few pointers from Archer and they sit together talking and watch the Hickerson- Nevel match. Now 3 of the last 4 guys have The owner invested in someway. Then the underdog Hickerson wins against Nevel and they go away and come back with Hickerson standing in front of me and telling the guy behind me "we chopped it but have to play it out".

Most likely I see the worst possibilities and all was good, Except the chop.
