Mika Immonen

Mika's personality and class do not come close to measuring up to his skills with a pool cue.

I don't think Mika needed to be rude about the question.

I was at the expo one year watching Hatch's match and he lost pretty badly. A boy about 10 years old came up to Hatch and asked for an autograph. The father of the boy apologized about coming up to him after a loss. Dennis' quote, "It's not his fault I lost, I just didn't shoot well. Of course I will give you an autograph." Class act as far as the fans go. Something Mika should think about.

Mika is a world champion and Hall of Famer he is a great guy if you get to know him a little bit.

Believe me when Efren loses he is thinking bad stuff even though he acts like it is no big deal.

If you are lucky enough take a lesson from Mika, do it. The best way to get to know a professional is treat them as such.

No one likes to lose, some are more honest about it than others.

I don't think anyone is saying that he's the only one who doesn't like to lose but if in defense of another someone has to say "if you get to know him/her" then that should speak for itself.

I have observed mika's attitude for a long time now and got to see it in person, i personally think he has narcissist traits and take joy that IMO he is the pro with the most shutout or blowouts that i've seen.

still love they guy just from a far, like a stream or something like that.
(come on, he's been shutout a lot)

Mika has always been driven by a huge competitive spirit. Even before his international career he was furious when losing. Also, Mika is Finnish. Finnish people are not very sociable and out-going and they trust only their closest friends. PR, marketing and public exposure are something Finns are not usually comfortable with. In this context it's not surprising that Mika is not always there for his fans in the most friendly manner. Too bad for Mika fans out there.

Lmao;) I'm very calm! I always speak my mind. I don't hide my feelings about anything or anyone!

Dennis may have had his problems, but he is classy as they come when it comes to the fans. He is a delight to watch, and the fans all seem to love him. Whether he's winning or losing, he can always muster up a smile for the railbirds. Maybe Mika should think about it, but he's a different person, so I really don't expect him to change. Losing is something some folks never learn to take in their stride.

Was at the Turning Stone for the final day and I was very excited to see Mika play live. Everything was great watching him get his arse handed to him by John Morra but the real trouble started after he lost. After some choice words to Morra he came back over to his chair to pack his cues. I asked him what type of cue he was using and he snaped at me..

"Where's my plastic case??"

I then realized that the girl I was with threw away a bunch of garbage that was in front of our chairs and not knowing it Mika's plastic case for his break cue. I apologize to him telling him that she didnt know any better and said to hold on and I will get it. I went to the trash can and saw that it was covered in crap so there was no way I was gonna dig for it. I then go to a cue vendor and explained what happened and he was nice enough to give me a plastic case free of charge.

I get back to the table and I again apologize to Mika handing him the case and guess what happens.... I get a smug look of how dare you and there was no thank you or its ok it was an accident comment. Nope!! Notta!!

Now don't get me wrong I know he was in a bad mood because of the Morra match but that doesnt mean you have to be a royal douche when all I tried to do was fix a situation that was an honest mistake. From what I remember the case looked mad beat up so it did look like trash. Why is a world class player carry around a break cue in a beat up plastic case anyway??? He just turned on his heel and left.

I don't know Mika and I do take into account that he was pissed off at Morra about the rack and losing but come on man.... Dont be a douchebag to people that had nothing to do with your state of affairs. Secretly I really wanted Shaw to put the screw to him and boy did he EVER!!!! 9-1 in 20 minutes was fricking epic!! Mika talking to himself and going buggy, throwing his cue and acting like a child was almost a pleasure to watch. Normally I dont wish ill upon others but be careful what you wish for... You just may get it ;)

Mika if you are reading this I want to apologize to you again for my friend throwing out your cheap ugly plastic case for your break cue. It was a mistake and I fixed it and you are welcome. I was upset for you and I made things right but you had to be ungrateful for it. I hope the next time we see each other you will take the time to apologize for your behavior. I doubt you will but prove me wrong... Prove me wrong.

WOW, i would never ever thought Mika is like that, Earl no question!.. i would not ask for an apology, you already exposed his attitude and behavior to the pool lovers, i personally will never ever look at him the same from now on! step on him and move on. Thank you for sharing. Oh by the way, other pros should take a note from this post, they better behave; thanks to AZB, and all the streams.

Maybe some of it has to do with:

"I'm gonna finish 3rd in a big tournament full of top pros and I'm not gonna make enough money to pay my bills this month."

No excuse, this sport doesn't pay very well. It really hasn't for almost a century. Mika made a decision to play pool. It's a great game but a challenge to earn a living. If a player doesn't like the earning potential, then do something else.

The issue with Mika acting unprofessional is that he is being sponsored. One of the avenues that a "pro" has to help pay the bills is sponsorship. Acting unprofessional can limit his opportunities with future sponsors. Just ask Earl.

Put aside your personal idiosyncrasies. It's a business for a pro. Treat it so.

What kind of cue, tip, shaft, or chalk asked of a pro that just lost a match must drive them crazy...it does me.

The 9 ball wasn't even in the ball box yet on the Shaw championship win, when someone asked what kind of cue he was using. Like that is going to help someone shoot like him. Johnnyt

Well, when a pro is asked that question by a fan or a budding pool player ANYTIME, even after a loss, he should thank his lucky stars AND the fact that he is probably being supported by a cue sponsor and that SOMEONE actually gives a F**K!

Professional Athletes and how "The Zone" effects socializing

Mika is probably the most competitive player I've seen. I had a chance to speak and take a photo with him at a tournament, and I found him to be friendly and cordial, if not a little quiet. I waited until after his match and was going to ask him to sign my case, but after a tough loss, it was pretty clear he was in no mood to talk to anyone. I just accepted it, and moved on because I know that's just the way he is.

It would be great if all professional players could all meet the standards of behaviour that we expect of them, but the reality is that many do not (true for most other sports and professions as well).

Please understand that the part of our mind that we use to compete is different than the hemisphere used to socialize and joke around. The very best players will go into a "zone" and sometimes it takes awhile to snap out of it. Shane is a good example.

From experience, when I'm in that zone, I can't even remember the last shot, let alone try to carry on a conversation with anyone. I've been accused of being anti-social at times, however, it's mainly because I'm so anchored to that "zone" that many times I couldn't talk if I tried. The TV producers urged me to change this when appearing on ESPN frequently and it was quite a challenge. I literally had to have a system to go from competing to socializing with the crowd.

Mika has often ignored me and if I didn't know better I'd think he didn't like me. This is not true and some of his closest friends have confirmed that he goes especially deep into the zone when he plays - even when he's just around a pool table.

I know it sounds crazy, but when I walk into a pool environment, my entire mental processes change and become more withdrawn......this is purely a subconscious behavior and very difficult to over-ride just by "trying," or thinking about it consciously.

Golfers, tennis players, and boxers are the same, don't be surprised if they can't talk for several minutes or several hours after a competition. Pool players are more accessible, so they seem different, and the truth is, they're not.

Mika is Mika. Lots of guys are no fun to be around after a loss. But....how the hell do you throw away a pool cue case? I know its just a protective sleeve but unless it belongs to you leave it be.

Mika has a well earned rep as a diva. On this one I can see why he was a little miffed though.

Everybody wants to win their respective match. I have no problem with competitiveness or even sultry behavior. Mika does take it to another level. Last year while I was playing him in the One Pocket Championships in Reno, our match was very close and he began to throw the object ball on to the floor repeatedly bouncing it while I was down on a shot. Not once mind you but on going for about 5 minutes when it was my shot. I asked him to stop please and he gave me a look like who was I to question his behavior. Okay so he stops then he proceeds to go to the next table and slam balls around while I was down on my shots again. Enough, I called the referee over to complain and Mika gave me another look like who was I to question his behavior. Anyway the referee stayed there the entire match and I did win it hill hill. Fortunately for me, I have been sharked for over 50 years of playing pool and I can handle it but nonetheless it is very crude behavior and in tournaments, referee's should know a-forehand about problem players and take the appropriate action early on so as to keep the game in its proper decorum.

Mika is fine if there are cameras around.
Turn off the cameras and he turns on that child that he is.
Temper tantrums and all.
Sometimes even acts manic depressive.

And yes, he VERY clearly has an accent.

Congrats on the win. Has to be quite a feather in your cap. :D

Congratulations!

I need lessons from you.
