I watched the World Summit of Pool today. The match between Corey and Mika was interesting because they actually used the microphones that are attached to their shirts. Usually, you never hear a peep out of a professional pool player, but in this match Mika was whining about the rolls Corey was getting. He even made direct comments to Corey about how he gets a good roll every time he kicks. I've never seen a player whine about rolls to another player before. Oh, and the chronic arm flailing is embarrassing to watch. :o

Have you ever been on ESPN? Then STFU you idiot!!!

No, but I'm good enough to be. My stroke is fluid and pure, not all cramped up like a bodybuilders.

The whole point of this thread, for the people smart enough to notice, is that the dialogue between the players added an extra element to the match. Hearing the players woof at each other is what televised pool needs. Not two robots running racks.

Mika isnt called the "iceman" for nothing ya know..... Im sure he just let it get to him, it happens.

Anyway, thats a pretty bold statement, saying that your good enough to be on ESPN. Do you have any major accomplishments that you could tell us about to prove your statement?

Anyone is qualified to pass judgement on the sportsmanship of any athlete, whether they play that sport well, poorly, or even not at all. The thread initiator is certainly permitted to offer the opinion that Mika's behavior doesn't reflect well on his sport. It is a reasonable observation. Still, that match sure was a Deuel luckfest, and anybody would have been as frustrated as Mika. But, as our thread initiator points out, Mika could have handled it better.

Anyone who missed the match may want to check out this thread, specifically about that match.

yea i never liked mika's game. he whines like a baby and always thinks he got some bad luck when he makes a bad shot also. like when he safed himself on the 5 or 6 behind the 9, it was badly hit ball not bad luck and he jus gave that face like he got a bad roll. i never seen a match on tv or tape that he won either so i never really got to respect his game that much either. he is a world champ so he cant play bad but maybe i jus catch him at the wrong times. lol

actually,,,mika is KNOWN for his whining conduct at rooms(at least one room, anyway) where he has played regularly.

Tons of top pros whine when they get frustrated enough. Two years ago at the UPA championship in LA (which Mika won), Ernesto Dominguez beat Tony Robles pretty good. Ernesto never left him a shot, playing great safeties and running out. Tony kept selling out whenever he kicked at a ball, and finally Tony started complaining, saying that he wasn't getting any rolls. Tony is known as a gentleman with a great attitude, and I agree that he is, but it just goes to show that any player can get frustrated to a point where they might act on their emotions. I've seen tons of Mika matches, and I have yet to see him complain about anything.

There was a match in taiwan? i think where he was playing Yang, apperantly he wanted to make a push out but the ref didn't hear it so it was called a foul. Yang ended winning the match and Mika refused to shake his hands. Found it really unsportsman like.

Then you haven't played much in the upper zone! Thems can be some whinin'__ers! The one's who whine as a result of an 'entitlement mentality' are the worst, IMO. THose balls couldn't give a poop about what you did last shot!!

Mika's the Iceman because he's from way way up North. Anybody who's watched him knows he gets on an emotional roller coaster at times. Bjorn Borg he ain't.

LOL... I AM A BODYBUILDER and I have a great stroke so I still don't know what you are trying to say. Good enough to be on ESPN? I highly doubt you are, unless it's one of those bloopes and blunders episodes.

Mika played badly in that match. He was *****ing about the rolls, but that's the way game goes sometimes. Corey played some great kicks to even hit the balls so he deserved some good fortune. It wasn't like Corey was missing shots and getting lucky safes.

The best line was when Corey said, "I can't get a roll", after Mika made a comment about the positions Corey was leaving him in after the kick shots.

ONe thing though that kind of sucked was the fact that Corey's seat and table were very close to the pool table. It made it so that Corey was forced to sit in a position that disturbed Mika on the break. The tourmament directors should have remedied that situation before the match began or at the latest, as soon as the first incident occurred.

I saw that and thought the same thing...They do have a commercial break here and there... they could have moved the chair or something...

Seemed like there was alot more room on the other side of the table than the side Cory was on.

My favorite line is after he kicked at the ball, hit it, and then made the nine and turned to the camera and said something like "I planned that the whole time"

Just goes to show that youy dont have to be a stoic emotionless let-it-go kinda guy to be World Champion. The competitive spirit and killer instinct count more in the end IMHO.

Full disclosure- I suffer from Flailing Arm Syndrome

Last Two,
Very interesting observation. I happened to be present at a conversation between 2 of the best players in history; one of them observed that there is a definite difference between a player who is a "champion" and players who have just won a championship. These guys reserve use of the word champion for players who play at an extremely high level, play with heart, and play with professional demeanor and sportsmanship. In their eyes to be a champion is to be in a very exclusive club (no whiners allowed I believe - someone who displayed the alleged behavior would probably be called a whiner "who plays like a champion" - after all you still have to acknowledge that level of playing skill, no one is going to say Earl doesn't play like a champion).

I have always thought that there is more to achieving "champion" status than just winning a tournament.
