There was a thread about this awhile back. I tried to find it and couldn't...probably just as well because I think it turned into a flame war anyway. At that time, I believe this was a rumor but it's now confirmed. For the whole story go to the following link (Pool & Billiard Magazine)

"8-BALL LEGENDS TO COMPETE IN TV CHALLENGE SHOWDOWN - New Pool Tour Launches with Biggest Prize Money Event Ever! PRESS RELEASE (Las Vegas, June 30th, 2005) "The International Pool Tour (IPT), a major new pool organization founded by tv personality and author Kevin Trudeau and sponsored by NaturalCures.com,, will launch with the richest, most high-profile tv event in the history of the sport—a blockbuster challenge match between 9-time World Champion Mike Sigel and 8-Time World Champion Loree Jon Jones. "Big Shots: The Battle of the 8Ball Legends" will take place on Saturday, August 20th, 2005 at a major casino/hotel in Las Vegas and will be broadcast on national television, and throughout the world, in earlySeptember. "It is the first time in the history of pool that a man and a woman will meet head-on in a final challenge or championship match. They will play a "Race to 9" with the best 2 out of 3 sets winning the match. The ultimate winner of the "Big Shots Battle" will be awarded $100,000 cash with the runner-up receiving $50,000, the biggest pay-day ever in the game of pool. ""The IPT is bringing back real pool," said tour founder Kevin Trudeau. "This is pool like it was in its glory days—when Fats and Mosconi were playing. All IPT events will be 8Ball not9-Ball; 8-Ball is the game that everyone knows and plays. The IPT also has real rules, which means that the best players, not the lucky ones, will rise to the top and win!" Both Sigel and Jones are considered true sultans of stroke and are amongst the most legendary players in the sport's long and colorful history.

(a little further down)

"Big Shots: Battle of the 8-Ball Legends" is the first of a number of high-profile IPT events which will be held throughout the year. All IPT events will abide by the followingrules: --All events will be 8-Ball -4 1/2 inch pockets -Slow nap cloths -No breaking from the side rails -Winners break -No shot clocks -No jump cues "The schedule of IPT competitions will culminate with the annual World 8-Ball Open Championship. This open tournament will offer an unprecedented $500,000 to the first place winner with over $3 million in guaranteed prize money. "The World 8-Ball Open Championship will be open to men and women of all ages with registration and a nominal registration fee. ""For the first time in history, pool players will be able to earn over 1 million dollars a year in prize money," said tour founder Trudeau. "We're going to see these great but anonymous pool hustlers emerge from the shadows simply because the money is so big. Thanks to the IPT, and events like the "Big Shots Battle," pool has become a real and legitimate sport."

Someone needs to tell him about the Tokyo 9-ball where Efren made $168,000 and change for first place.

Nevertheless this could really add some much needed publicity to the sport. I am not to sure about 8-ball, but if it is played on 9-foots I could deal with it no problem. Loving the fact there are no jump cues allowed, no shot clock, slow nap cloth is intriguing and a 180 from recent years. About time some rich guy finnaly stepped up and did what most of us have dreamed about. Kudos to him, I hope this works well for him and makes this sport explode. The kind of payoffs he is talking about in the championship type of things with $500,000 first place is the type of thing that will make Joe Public go "whoa, what the hell is this? Money in pool? Half a million? Jebus!"

Two words: Holy crap! Just one thing why is this called 8-ball legends when both Sigel and Lori Jon are probably both better known for their Straights and 9-ball skills (not to say they aren't both fantastic 8-ball players) Can't wait though. Just read the article. The quotes are ridiculous it almost sounds like a parody, but I guess it's the real deal. "I will show the world in this challenge why I'm the greatest player ever, living or otherwise" said Sigel. "I'm going to put on a pool show like nothing before in history. There isn't a player in the world who can beat me. Loree Jon may be the best female player ever but no one can beat me playing pool—especiallya woman." Damn Mike you are pretty awesome, but ease up a bit after all I didn't know you did anything but sell cues these days.

I love the idea but it sounds too good to be true. I mean the event is supposed to happen next month, tickets are for sale, and they don't know where it's going to take place yet? Please!

Anyone notice. The thing is sponsered by NaturalCures.com. It is going to feature Mike Sigel in its first major match. Mike Sigel was the trainer for Tom Cruise in the Color of Money. Tom Cruise has recently been blasting the psychiatric profession and drugs they proscribe claiming that vitamens and exercise is all that is needed to cure mental disease. This is in effect a NaturalCure such as Tom is mad about due to his love of Scientology. Could this be a way of Scientology throwing some money out there and using abit of stealth to advertise their stance? Could Mike Sigel be a scientologist himself? Enquiring minds want to know.... or do they?

They probably told him to hype it up so they could gain more interest from women.Even if the women dont watch or play pool. If a man talks all that trash women will watch just hoping the lady kicks the guys butt. I think they are just trying to get more interest from the ladies.

She has absolutely no shot. Mike just plays so good. It's funny that this sounds more like an exhibition match. Wouldn't you like to be one of the two that are picked to play though since you can do no worse than 50,000? Like all the things I have seen come and go (you all remember the 1 million dollar tournament) I really, really hope this works.

most men don't stand a shot against mike.......let alone loree. not sure how they went about deciding who would play who.

i'd rather see an archer vs a. fisher or something like that.

TAP, TAP, TAP
Honestly, the only group of people that know who they are now are those of us in the pool world. Joe Schmo sitting at home watching tv (whom we want to become a fan and thus spend money to sponsor pool in general) doesn't know who they are. On the flip side, Joe Schmo see's Johnny (or Corey, Rodney, etc) on tv and he's constantly seeing Allison and Corr. I think it would work much better if familiar faces were on the screen for something like this. JMHO

It's going to be three matches in all.
The first will be Loree, then Karen, then Allison.
Diamond is setting up a table in Orlando at the Orlando Billiard Center for Mike to practice on during the next month.
All matches will have the same format... $100K to winner and $50k to loser.

What I heard, from the horse's friend :)

whoa, I live like 20 miles from there.

Man it seems like they are missing out not having Janette too. Everybody knows her. Mabye she just didn't want to. I don't think it makes much difference about the guys though. I mean I doubt Joe Schmo knows any more about Rodney Morris or Corey Duel than he does about Mike Sigel considering the guys are hardly ever on TV...now if they got my man Earl it might be a different story.
