Military pool players

I think it would just be cool if we could get all the active duty players to go to the next BCAPL event since they are not requiring you to be a league player to enter. We all could enter the Advanced division, or what would be even more fun, if we all could go to DCC. I have never been to the DCC, but that is one place I will definitely make it too one of these days.

Oh yeah, we do need to include the retired guys,,,,even though they probably cant keep up anymore, we still have to invite them....just joking and I am sure that you retired guys can still hit them real good, probably a lot better than us youngins...

We at the CSI/ BCAPL appreciate all the hard work and sacrefice our Armed Forces Member endure in order to defend our freedom and World wide peace!!!

And I don't know how many ACDU can get the time off during 2011 BCAPL National but we would love to kick some ideas around for a small get together or Armed Forces Mini Tourney ** If time permitting.

I don't know if all of you are familiar with BCAPL National schedule, but it is usually so jammed packed most people don't get to do half the things they wanted to do in Vegas.

Everyone's match times are different throughout the day, trying to catch up with new & old friends, and along with the hype of Vegas, people often loose track of time and days

I was actually stationed at the Miramar (Navy Air Station) at the time as lowly PSSN (PNSN) and that is where I was caught by the pool bug And - Yes, I watched the Military Challenge. I believe the Marine's name is Ray Roberts at the time stationed out of San Diego, I can't recall the name of base...

I wonder how he is doing lately

I have a tape of it somewhere, Im going to have to dig it up and watch it again just to try and figure out who all was there.

Ray was his name and he could really play. After the finals were all done Ray took a few of us down to College Billiards, wow, a little bit shady, but a really great place. I do wonder what ever happened to him,,,his Marine buddy could play pretty good too.

college billiards is a great room imo. i spent more time at on cue though

where'd you live while you were there? i was there for 3 years. they moved the mwr to the old chow hall/library. i hear it's real nice now. they had 5 new olhousen tables when i was on my way out

Mark did ton of remodeling to College but he sold it at 2004 and purchased the BCAPL, so if you come to the Nationals, you can chat with him

I was there from 95-98, very long time ago, haha. I can't remember but I lived in a L - shaped barrack. I'm pretty sure things haven't changed much though

I'm cheating, I'm not currently IN, but one of my favorite stories happened during advanced training in Ft. Meade. There was a pool table in the barracks, one of the games I played the opponent stated that I only won because "I was shooting at easy shots the whole time" and he had all these tough ones. Playing shape was not a word known in them there parts

Dagwoodz, I read with great interest your optimism for pool tournaments and activities to take place at military installations.

In 1994-1995, while serving as the Assistant League and Program Director at the BCA in Iowa City, Iowa, I developed a BCA/MWR Pool League scenario that was sent to Army MWR HQ. During the mid-80's I was a Recreation Assistant for MWR in Germany, and have been Tournament Director for US Army and Air Force Europe Pocket Billiard Championships. During my active duty in the Army I was a regular at the Recreation Center playing pool every day after work.

When I started at the BCA, I knew that this would be the best vehicle to promote the Military League System with the backing of a legitimate non-profit entity for the benefit of service members. Taking into consideration the lifestyle of soldiers, the deployments and irregular schedules, a program with great independence was developed. Knowing the regulations the military has, and the bureaucracy involved, I labored over a year with the handbook, scoresheets, qualification criteria, and options for tournaments and championships.

Needless to say, the plan was met with the usual non-committal by the foot dragging career professionals at MWR. Concerns over budget changes in MWR Policy and Personnel were given. I sent league material and said they could copy and distribute at will throughout the MWR system and let Community Center Managers have the players provide feedback after a trial run. BCA Business Members were at the ready to help support a prize fund in lieu of cash for participants.

The failure of this program was my biggest disappointment while serving at the Billiard Congress.

Today, all of the material for this program sits in a box. It hasn't seen the light of day for 15 years. Perhaps it is an idea that could be reintroduced. As a former Service Member, MWR Employee, and lifelong Pool Enthusiast, I surely hope so.

I am not military but a lot of my family is and was in various branches of the military, so we have a special that we do for all active military, police, fire and emt/parmedic. If they show their valid military (etc) id at the front counter they get free pool time! Of course wives, girlfriends, husbands, boyfriends and anyone non military that comes in with them has to pay table time, but it is the least we can do for those that protect our country right!!

That's 5698. it's the crappy one that almost never has hot water,lol. the only thing that's changed is they've gotten rid of the decent furniture and downgraded to real cheap furniture.

I know Ty Laha very well, a great player and Gambler, he lives in KY now with his wife and son, saw him at the DCC two years ago, played him some one pocket, broke even..I was getting 9-7, he still plays pretty sporty. I think he was at Dam neck during that time period. I have been going to Q-Masters in Norfolk and now in Va. Beach for 25+ years and before that Gibbs billiards on Witchduck road, Gibbs has been gone for a long time. Great area for pool, Q-masters now has over 70 tables, and the proprioter, founder and host of the US Open 9 Ball Championships, Barry Berhman is a close friend. He treats the military very well. Tuesday all military play free Active and retired. This is the best room on the east coast and possibly the country. Just sayin!! Stop in I'm sure you could get played!!

Greeting to one and all...present, past and retired military members.

I retired from active duty in June 04 (USAF) based out of the DC area. Picked up the game in the early 90's from a guy who was the Air Force Champ at one time (Russ Trudeau)...He would play me a buck a game or a beer a game. Needless to say the dollar bills and beers added up but I learned thanks to that guy.

I've played and won my share of base tournaments and the rules of having money as a prize has changed over the years to the point now that you cannot do it. So what we would do is collect money on the side (on the sly) and payout to first and second place. Usually five bucks a head...you didn't get rich but it made it more competitive. MWR usually supplied the trophies and plaques.

Always had a good time with the other services...good memories as well!

I was Air Force stationed in Germany. Got out in 91. While I was there the best players around that I knew off were Chin Chance and Ron Gisel. Anyone remember them? For tournaments there were a few Army events - I played in one 14.1 event that was sending the winner to a higher level - took third place in that one.

I was never into the military pool scene though. Luckily for me we had a nice Brunswick in the basement of the barracks that no one played on but me. That's where I ran my high run of 98 balls.

I would like to be counted in if a tourney could be put together for past & present military men and women.

I am a former 4th Infantry Division, Army man. Was fortunate to take part in and actually won the one and only military tourney I ever competed in. It was a brigade 8-ball tourney held at Wiesbaden Air Base in Germany, 1977. There didn't seem to be much red tape back then, however, I was playing, not involved in organizing the event.

Hoping some progress can be made on setting something up as I would sure enjoy getting together with and playing some talented military pool players. You know, the Army guys and gals....
