Missing out on life

Went to watch an amateur tournament today and only 13 showed up.

The guy running it told me he is losing interest in pool. Says he has to spend too much time at it to get good, and for what?

Now he feels that he is missing out on life.

I can't agree with him more.

If you guys are thinking about quitting pm me if you have any nice cues you have for sale.

Cheers,
Marcus

ive been running a tournament at a local pub for over 4 years now. it used to be every tuesday and thursday and we used to get 20-30 people every time, sadly the tournament is only held once a week now and its a struggle to get 8 players. i even started an annual tournament to try and get more people in the area interested, sadly i have not succeeded. as for missing out on life, i have made a lot of good friends playing pool and cant really think of anything else i would rather do with my time.

For every person that says that.....where is the commitment? (insert shake of head twice and a shrug to boot)I am also an amateur...will not really a rookie any longer but you have to take pool one step at a time. Its like chess you have to focus on every play you make. The person who says he spends too much time on pool? I laugh, well because I never look at the time when I am playing I have played for a 1/2 hr and felt content and maybe the next day i would play for 6 hrs and feel unfulfilled. you at all costs make room for "life" but keep everything well balanced.

The vultures sure did come out.

Oh he sure does, or did, enjoy pool, but he was thinking of his family. If he spends 60-70 hours on pool a week (at least - he does own a pool room/dance club) then he has no time to spend with his family, going out and seeing and enjoying the world.

He is also self employed in another field.

Really a busy person.

It is not pool that is the culprit, it is his being self-employed. A self-employed person generally puts in horrendous hours. My father owned and ran a wholesale meat business, basically I didn't have a father. The independence of being self-employed comes at a hefty price. You either are starving or working way too many hours.
I'll stick with regular employment and find a way to live with the jerks I may have to work for here and there.

We all miss out on life

We all miss out on life. Nobody can do everything that they want to do and when they are feeling blue they feel that they are missing out on other things they could be doing. That is true but then they would be missing out on what they are doing now were they doing something else.

Leonardo de Vinci mourned over his wasted life on his death bed!

The game is a hobby, a fun night out for 99% of us.

My interest has ranged from fervish to wanting nothing to do with the game, but that's it. Complaining has nothing to do with any of it.

For recreation of course.

Fact is ...

when a person isn't consumed with making their game better, they get tired of getting beat for 'fun'. How much fun is it to get beat all the time ... duh?
Even the slowest of players come to realize that? And their are a lot of negative type reinforcements in the world. To keep your enthusiasm up, you have to have goals in Pool, and work towards achieving them.

Having other interests, variety in life, keeps things more interesting, and makes you well rounded, and a more interesting person.

You are absolutly right. Being self employed is not a job, it is a lifestyle. It becomes your work, your family, and your hobby. People that have never done it really don’t understand the time and commitment it takes. What is worse is when your business is having financial trouble. The long hours are even more draining on you physically and mentally.
