Moral Question about selling a cue

I did not want to start a donation thread though, while I know you guys (forum members) will be happy to send 10,20 to us for the trip that would be MORE than what I could sell that cue for at the end, it would feel a bit odd using the forums for that. Otherwise I would have just started a "help my son get to Nationals" thread. I mean who would ask to get help from strangers for a trip to VEGAS for gods sake LOL?? it's not like I'm trying to raise money for his medical bills. He is OK with not going this year if we can't, we already had some talks to the wife about this (well loud talks ), and he stepped in to say we should not be arguing about this, if he can't go this year, we'll plan for next year.

And I for what we need to go, it's just really money for the trip. He has a cue, we have pants, we have a suitcase, everything we'd need to legally go out in public hehe.

I lost my job less than a year ago. The hardest thing was just thinking of my kids and what might happen. In the previous few three years I had already lost a house and two cars and was only just barely making it in that job anyway, so I had been really worried a lot even before I lost my job. Things have taken off for me in my own business since then but it was damn scary at first. I understand how you feel.

Yes Joss is sold, just sent it out last week, it was my first real good cue that I used for 15 years. I don't think I actually told him that I sold it, I did not want to say "well son, I sold my prized first cue so you can go", that would just make him feel sad about it.

I know Lazar and Alex for a couple of years now. They are both great people, dedicated to the game and very stand up individuals. They won't accept a donation easily.
Maybe a sponsorship....? :wink: (we make a playing t-shirt with AZB Forum logo and a "fake" endorsement contract for Alex that will go with the donation)

I have a cue now, a very nice Ned Morris that I got from a friend in RI area years ago. That Joss was a sentimental thing I had, plus it was the best hitting Joss I ever hit with LOL. But I would rather have the trip with my son that keep a cue I have not played with in a couple of years. It was not too hard to let it go actually once I decided on it.

Since I was gong to sell the cue to fund the trip, we'll donate it to another Jr player, my son and I will talk it over and he can decide what to do with it, maybe donate it to the BEF to raffle or give away at the Nationals. There is also a fund raiser at our home room in Ayer, MA, we may donate it to a raffle there. I'll contact Steve Klapp and let him know also.

i am the first to admit i don't know my ass from a hole in the ground but, he gave the cue to your son to be able to advance his play. now he has. and to advance further by playing in nationals, the cue may have to be sold. i think the person who made the cue would be ok with that.
and, could you ask the cue maker. i don't keep up on who is still alive and producing or quiting like i used to:frown: but i would start there.

I'd love to have an AZBilliards logo for Alex to use! But it can't really be a shirt because the kids from The Billiards Cafe all go with a USAPL shirt to present a common and professional appearance. Any patches would be welcome though, if he ends up looking like a NASCAR car, so be it LOL.

I'd suggest you put up a list of anticipated expenses, along with a date that you would need to have the $ by...as you prob know, up to 2wk for $ from paypal to hit your account.

Thanks, will put that in the post as well. The Jr. Nationals is not until end of July, the dates are actually in the Jr Pool section on here. I think start is July 26th, so we'll be there on the 25th.

I've been looking for a cue for my son as well. He's not that good yet, but he's very interested, and the fact that a full size cue is way to big for him gets a bit frustrating I think.
The other problem being that he lives with his mother, so at most I could only take him to play once every other week....and we all know how hard it is to learn with that long between lessons/practice

I think it's great what you're doing for him though, a true sign of being a supportive parent. For that part alone, I'd be happy to donate a little something as well :thumbup:

Thanks! It takes a while to get any good at this game, I figure... 40 years? hehe

It took my son about 4 years to "get" the game and the shots and to see the table as a pool player would.

My son passed away at age 6. I had his cue in my locker. It was a one piece about 50" long and I kept it for about 3 months. Then one day I saw a young fellow about age 6 playing pool with his Dad and I took the cue and gave it to him and said "This cue is for you to keep. It's yours now." He smiled ear to ear.
Not once have I ever wished I kept it. I could almost hear my son saying "Go ahead Dad, give it to him."
When it comes right down to it, cues are just a piece of wood.

It seems to me that whoever gave you that cue wanted to see your son play and improve. This is just an extension of that. If he's not using it anymore, the cue can help him one last time by being sold to further his playing career.

That is nice of you, I couldn't do it though. I made my dad a cue, he played with it a couple of times and put it up because he was afraid of messing it up. Since he passed I have it and his old Mali put up in a case with his picture in it.

That's why I don't feel much loss about selling my Joss, happy son > Joss sitting in a case.

Nothing sadder than someone young passing away, there is an 8 yr old that died in the Boston bomb not too far from me, and a 6yr old boy that lived on our street and went to the same bus stop as my daughter died from complications from food poisoning.

I wouldn't think badly of you for doing this. Do what you got to do and don't sweat the complainers. I think it's cool that you are doing whatever you can to help your son realize his dreams. I wish I had someone that cared enough to do this for me when I was that age.

I wish I had some spare money to throw your way but I got 3 kids in college at the moment and they have decimated my savings account! I hope you find a permanent job soon and good luck to your son at nationals.

Thanks! I'll be sure to have updates when we're there and I've been posing some pics in different threads of our league and tournament outings as well.

His goal is to make the Mosconi Cup team to avenge the US for their loss this year, we watched it live.
