just happened to have my TV on an hour ago and tuned in to cbs when the Evening News w/ Scott Pelle was coming on.

The opening summary of stories to come on included an announcement that the venerable reporter, Morley Safer, was retiring after 50+ years at cbs. The clip they chose was from the following interview he did with Gleason. In the tease they left in the Safer voice over where he refers to Gleason as "a 68 year old hustler."

I noticed that they were playing with Centennials and a blue circle cue ball.
So many times on TV shows and movies I see cheap balls...the equivalent of drug store golf balls.

...but not with The Great One....Jackie was a POOL PLAYER. :bow-down:

Thanx, KC

yep, agreed, Jackie was the real deal.

In this old 20/20 clip (this is part 2) Hugh Downs and Jackie get into the Hustler a little and even mention his "life long passion" for playing pool.

Plus we get a glimpse of his "play room" at his Florida home.

I'm in a twilight zone...I'm sitting in a StarBucks posting this.
I posted my original response here...and then the WIFI went down.

When it came back...I posted in the other thread.....

I wonder if his house in Inverness FL that you posted about a while back ever sold.

He was a national treasure.

You shoot a good stick...

I always felt that Gleason was very underrated as an actor (at least by the public) because he did a lot of screwball comedy. But to me, he was as fine an actor as there was. He often dominated the scenes he was in, even when playing a supporting role or not having a line to speak. His facial expressions held a wealth of emotion, clearly letting the observer know what he was thinking and feeling.

He had impeccable timing and could deliver a line with the perfect pace and emphasis, be it comedy or tragedy. And he was a great pool player. What more could you ask for?

So, it appears that the reason for Morley's quick retirement announcement last week was to do with his failing health. He died today.

RIP Mr. Safer. I remember as a teenager seeing your reports from Vietnam and I def enjoyed the reposting of your visit with Jackie Gleason.

Str8PoolMan...Actually no, he was not a "great" pool player. He could sometimes run 50 balls in straight pool. In the 50's & 60's, especially in places like NYC, that was akin to being a good banger. EVERYBODY ran 100 balls, and the top guys would play you 100 or no count (any run of less than 100 balls didn't count!). Word is that the BEST players would play you 200 or no count. Now that's scary good. :D He was, in every sense of the word, a great actor...and The Hustler was one of his better roles!

Paul Newman was hustled by Jackie....

Paul..."I beat him three straight games in pool for a buck each, and then we played for $200, and he beat me easy."

I guess you guys that don't approve of pool hustling will look at The Honeymooners a little differently now.
