First of all, I thought the rules were STUPID!! Rodney broke, dropped to balls and had to give up the table!!

However, here is my idea. Keep the three balls headsting thing, but no alternate break, WINNER has the option of breaking or giving it to his opponent.

What do you think??

I was there on Sunday and I could not believe that when at 2-1 Rodney favor, he broke sank a couple of balls and had to gave up the table. It wasn't like they were soft breaking. If they did not have that terrible rule, I truly believe it would have been the US holding up the cup and not Europe. It happend twice to Morris.
 
I think I was the first to call it stupid on here. But after watching all four days...I really like it. It made for lot better matches and more safeties than I've seen in 9-ball in a long time. Now if they will only get rid of the jump cues I think they have themselves a good game. Not as good as 14.1 or Carom mind you...but a lot better than they had. Johnnyt

It also happened twice to Archer in yesterday's match, both times resulting in a fairly easy run out for Drago.

yup!....dumbest rule I have ever seen!....in no game should you be penalized for making a great break....controling the cueball....making a ball, then give up the table?....stupid!

I'm no fan of the soft break.....but can't we just play 10 ball and forget all the "adjustments" to 9ball!

in an ideal world i think it should come down to the referee's discretion. if a player has hammered the rack yet unluckily for them two balls never went past the headstring then that shouldnt be a foul. the whole idea is to get players hitting the balls hard. if they do that then that's all that should matter.
 
There is an easy solution to this break rule situation, take away the 3 balls past the headstring but keep the break box. Simple solution or what?.
 
If you want the pros to hit the balls harder, put a radar gun and set a minimum mph.

Break in the box, 1 ball on the spot, 18 mph or harder.

The pattern of the balls is too random for the three above the headstring.

I still think the USA players deserved to turn over the table because they were cut breaking and really risking not getting balls uptable. Europe did not have many foul breaks. Archer foul broke almost every time and he has one of the most controlled power breaks, but he was not using it.
 
vice versa: keep 3 balls rule and take away break box. Unless soft break is possible again, did you note all the players trying to cut 1 into the side? And succeeding usually? 3 balls to pass the headstring are important to keep it strong enough.
