MOSCONI CUP 2023 AZB Watch Party / Master Thread

lots of words but none of them are "efren reyes cup"

This might upset some people, but a Europe vs Asia match does not generate anywhere near the same level of revenue.

America is the richest major country in the world and Matchroom need them. Asia has lots of poor countries, which means ticket revenue and TV rights are worth peanuts.

wasn't a dig on USA. both events can exist

With Asia's population advantage and pool's popularity there among young people, I'm not sure I agree with this. It might be closer than you think.

There was absolutely no reason for Gorst to scratch there...He basically had the whole table to play with, but chose to go towards that pocket?

Yay they won the first game! The forced chest bump has got me in tears

To anyone who thinks the mismatch isn't getting worse.

Remind me of the last time the USA didn't win even one singles match?

Ruiz stubs his toe on playing simple position. Advantage USA. Game one a gift to us.

Game 1 - Gorst/Woodward v Shaw/FSR

Gorst breaks dry but doesn't leave a look at the 1. Shaw pushes, tying up the 3 behind the 9 which will likely lead to a future safety battle. USA gives it back to them.

Shaw plays a weak safe leaving a long rail cut on the 1, but there are two problem spots on the table.

Woodward drills the cut perfectly, leaving a long 2-8 combination. They elect to play safe, but Gorst SCRATCHES IT IN THE BOTTOM CORNER! UGH!

FSR takes an extension then makes the 2 and breaks up the 3-9 perfectly. Shaw makes the 3 and gets perfect on the 4, they should be out from here. Oops! FSR dogs the leave on the 5, snookering Shaw behind the 8. Shaw jumps well but misses it, leaving it perfect for the Americans.

Woodward drills the 4 and leaves perfect for the 6. They should be out. Gorst leaves Woodward with too much angle on the 7, and he makes a nice attempt but leaves Gorst very thin on the 8. Gorst hearts it, leaving a long straight shot on the hanging 9. Woodward seals it with pace.

Score 1-0 USA

Game 2

Shaw breaks and the 1 drops in the side. They have a long 45 deg cut on the 2 down the long rail. There are two clusters elsewhere on the table, so expect a safe here or the next shot. FSR plays a good safe.

Gorst calls an extension then makes an incredible long jump shot on the 2 with his playing cue! The 3 nicks the 7 and misses, but they leave it tough luckily. Shaw has a look at a cross-side bank.

Shaw attempts the long bank to the top corner, barely missing it but it was a 2-way shot on the 9, which misses as well. Woodward miscues a jump with his playing cue and barely misses the hanging 3, but he gets a great roll leaving only a kick.

FSR steps up and kicks the 3 cross-corner to perfection. Shaw has to kick at the 4 - it will go cross-side, but he plays it safe but doesn't get there.

Woodward backcuts the long 4 perfectly, and leaves Gorst nice on the 5. They should be out from here. Woodward nearly rolls too far on the 7, but it stops 4" away and perfect. Woodward needs to power-draw the 8 (don't miscue!), which he does, and Gorst drops the easy 9.

Score 2-0 USA (first time they've led by 2 racks in any match this week!)

Barry Hearn said Mosconi Cup in 5 years will be played in an arena that holds 20,000.

Sounds like the Mosconi Cup is going nowhere.

Barry has said Americans need to travel on the tour. He said too many Americans are happy to stay in the USA.
I think it isn't so much that they are happy to play in the USA, they just don't think they can make money traveling to Europe.

Took three days but it looks like they finally figured out how the table is breaking.

From the "don't count your chickens until they hatch" department.
Americans in the crowd get a "USA' chant going only to have them dog the 3 ball on a cut shot into the corner pocket.

Game 3

Woodward breaks, and the 1 drops in the side. They have a tough back-cut on the 2 with natural shape on the 3. Gorst makes it, running the CB off the 5 but gets good on the 3. Woodward dogs the 3 with a big overcut, leaving a tough but makeable cut.

Shaw nails the 3 but leaves a delicate cut in the side on the 4. FSR makes it and they should be out, connect-the-dots from here. They do it.

Score is 2-1 USA. Shaw dances with the crowd during the break.
