MOSCONI CUP 2023 AZB Watch Party / Master Thread

The MC is supposed to be fun and entertaining, seems like a lot of you want to be MISERABLE at every tournament. Stay home, turn off your TV or computer and smash your head against the wall, the MC ISN'T FOR YOU!

If every tournament had crowds like MC many more would watch and more importantly ATTEND THE EVENT.

The "GET OFF MY LAWN" crowd needs to go. Thousands of hours of 6 people in the crowd either sleeping or on their phones isn't getting the job done.
Completely agree...

If it weren't for Shaw and to a much lessor extent Filler, the Mosconi would be literal boredom come to flesh. Skylar has that level of entertainment within him. Unfortunately, he simply hasn't had reason to celebrate or play up the crowd to the same degree. Shane appears to be as awkward as Filler when it comes to engaging the crowd. Some aren't cut from that cloth.

The Mosconi isn't about professional pool. It's about two land masses separated by an ocean comparing there "twigs and berries", ....and the drama created by the players while doing so. The fact that it's all of Europe vs only the states, is a merely a Merican ego thing. Again though..., not about competitive pool.

Shaw and Filler acted like buffoons. No amount of pontificating will change that. Might be your thing, fine. Not mine. Exhibition or not, always show respect for your opponent. The Mosconi had great atmosphere and great crowds long before Filler and Shaw were around.

Nobody on the US side acted that way in 2017 or 2018. Heck nobody on the Euro side acts that way. Even they know those 2 are clowns.

Agreed

I get that, and have no problem. You drain the nine ball to win a point, go crazy. Lie in the floor and have a fit for all I care. Do that after sinking a purple damn 5 ball at 2-1 in a race to 5, and you look like an idiot.

I fully understand that it's not you cup of tea, and I won't try to convince you otherwise. Regardless though... it's that type of crowd engagement that separates the Mosconi from everything else. It's not about disrespecting your opponent. It's about encouraging the crowd to become apart of the event.

On the flip side... Take SVB's (and Gorst I believe) antics after beating Filler. That was a clear mocking of Filler. That seems to be glazed over but it's the only example I know of wherein an opposing player purposely mocked another. I'm not knocking SVB. Just pointing out the hypocrisy.

Shaw is a clown. It's a guess on my part but I'd wager Filler just wants to adored like Shaw is by the Euro fans. Notice how much more the crowd is active during Shaw's "performances" then any other...? He welcomes and encourages fan engagement. He just comes off like a jackass because he's willing to do so in magnitudes greater than any other player.

I think you're exaggerating a little bit but I understand your point. I personally think it's great that some players are willing to forgo the whole "silence while shooting" rule, and entice the crowd to build up a "oooohhhhhhhhh" has he pulls back to shoot. Again though. Different strokes...

Quickly looking at the 'world snooker rankings'... At the bottom of the heap of 2 handfuls is Ali Carter with a 2023 total of: $492k/usd.

To prove the point. Lets jump all the way down to #50 on that list, and we find Elliot Slessor. With a meager year of only: $126k/usd

I know "making a living" is a subjective opinion, but I'd be high on the hog if I pulled in $126k/usd
He has done well, just shows how competitive that tour is. I would say its more the guys ranked 64 and higher. Every two years i belive it is, when there tour card ends, and those who aren't in the top 64 have to go to, cue school. To try and get there place back. Only winning a few matches a year won't cut it.

MC is a MR-owned/produced made-4-BRITISH-tv exhibition. That's all it is and the likelihood of the US actually competing for it anytime soon is a train that's done left the station.
I think your spot on here, thats how it feels when im watching now. Its just an exhibition, if it had started somewhere else. I doubt it would be like this today. Its Only in the UK!! That football type atmosphere.

One thing i will say on the whole,Americans not wanting to travel. If any of you remember, when this all sarted mid to late 90s all of the top Europeans then, went to America, to get better. And get the experience. And eventually it worked.
Your ralf souquet, oliver ortmann, marcus chamat, steve knight and meny more, and the guys that followed that first group, appleton, thorsten hohmann, all laid the ground work for what followed, this is one of the reasons why, Europe has had such hold, on the game in recent times.

Saw on FB that now people are complaining that 20k for losing is too little for the players....lol.

Never thought I'd live to see the day that pool players would get paid 20k for playing like garbage and their fans would still complain about what they walked away with. epic...lol

I mean seriously. How awesome is the state of pool that people have the balls to scoff at $20k for 4 days of poorly performed work.

Is that before or after you include expenses for the year of travel and loss family time? As well as the international hassles of travel because Barry doesn't have government connections. Being on Barry's tour is not cheap. There will be losers and he doesn't budget for it.

As if its pool players fault for not all winning a top heavy prize, which he carrot dangled in front of Allison for decades.

it seems svb had told JJ he didn't want to play any singles until day three, and that he didn't want to play filler.. that partly explains the second day fedor triple lineup, but also asks the question whether JJ has any clout whatsoever when it comes to shane. seems like weak coaching to me

Agreed. Interesting to hear some of Shane's requests in this video. JJ has no clout over Shane; is too buddy-buddy with him. Pretty sure Johan had a more productive relationship in that sense.

SVB at the Mosconi Cup. Always interesting, usually disappointing, a tad fascinating & sad and unlike anything I've witnessed in team sports.

He's running out of time but hope he figures this event out in the coming years. It's the only remaining hurdle of sorts remaining in an otherwise stellar career.

... I was thinking more along the lines of someone like a Chris Reinhold type up- and- comer to, say, travel to Hanoi or the European open or the like. Must be a multiple thousand dollar trip, with a statistically small chance of cashing.
If it's other than in the US, I think a typical tournament is going to cost an American $1500 to $2500 to play in. There are various ways to cut expenses. The major American tournaments are about the same, though.

Lot's of hacking, no mention of the impressive win over Filler. Yeah I know, it was too late, but still impressive.

sure, but that was on the 3rd (or 4th?) day. before that he didn't want to play any singles and no matches against filler. this is according to BD's mike panozzo who was there and is a trustworthy journalist. besides, to heed those wishes isn't on shane, it's on JJ.
