Joey A, I like to do little social experiments with pool. And I know this is off topic (and the subject of a future thread I'm planning) but at work, I usually take in a bunch of sighs and so-what's when I talk about pool to my co-workers.
So as a small social experiment I started a conversation on how I beat the ghost in 8-ball on a 9-foot table in a race to 3, and it took three years of efforts and practice to get to that point. A bunch of blank stares and some ridicule that I was wasting my time on a pool table (to put it kindly).
Then, last weekend, I purchased a Rubik's cube and using on line tutorials, I was able to solve the cube in 4 min 16 seconds after three days, then on day 7, I solved the cube in 2 minutes 10 seconds. So today after work, I started a conversion about the Rubik's cube, and demonstrated a 2.5 minute solve (not that impressive when the world record is less than 5 seconds). The co-worker reaction was complete opposite of the pool conversation. I was met with nods of approval and compliments on the intellect and skill it takes to complete the puzzle. But it only took me seven days of 30 minute practice sessions.
More and more, I'm understanding the sheer disconnect the public/media has with the sport, and how powerful the social stigma attached to pool is.
