Mosconi Cup Playing Stats Through Day 3 for Team USA

The thing is that the USA has had a chance to win every single match. It isn't like Europe has played flawless, they have just made less mistakes, gotten a few more rolls and held it together better. The toughest match was Gray vs Schmidt (in terms of quality of play by the opponent) and the USA won that match.

Europe has obviously destroyed the USA in lagging and that doesn't help your chances in a race to 5, alternate break playing 9 ball on a table that makes balls so easily.

All other matches, the USA had big opportunities to take advantage and win.

Hopefully today it comes together.

I don't think Europe have "gotten a few more rolls" at all. And while they have been vastly superior in the lag, it hasn't really come into play much given the absence of hill/hill matches.

Appelton got a lock down hook twice when simply trying to make a good hit.

Bergman's two rails with the cue ball out of the corner and scratching in the side when making the 7 on Day 2. He played it that way cause of the new cloth and it still scratched.

Schmidt making the 9 and scratching in the side.

Europe has had at least 3 (maybe 4) where the object ball came to rest on the 9 ball, wiring it up. The USA has had one (John Schmidt).

Oh and Neils shit the 9 ball in and then proceeded to act like he just hit the winning home run in the world series.

Europe has 'missed' at least a half dozen balls that fell into the pocket. Corey 'missed' two that fell.

Europe has had one golden break (maybe 2?)

Watch the matches on YouTube if you didn't take it in the first time.

When you are playing a short race and losing the first game a majority of the time, it just adds to the pressure. Losing the lag is huge. Europe has been uncanny in how consistent they are with it. In Day 3, the USA actually lagged much better but Europe still won 4 out of 5.

Excellent point
Only 1 match Appleton & Gray v Van Boening & Deuel has gone hill hill and in that match SVB/ Corey won
So winning the lag has not made difference for Europe so saying that One of readons that Europe did better cos they won lag is inaccurate

Poor play from the US team is Europe getting rolls now? No wonder you think they are ahead.

Nope. He held his hand up to apologise and then celebrated winning the game with his team (who were understandably excited).

Only stats for how well or bad a single player is doing is just count the singles matches. Not fair to a player that had 3 B&R's vs his partner missing 5 balls, sratching on break, and making bonehead mistakes. Johnnyt

This is correct. He said in his interview he hit it hard hoping to get lucky. At least he admitted it.

Definitely Euro pool has grown by leaps and bounds since 90s
But this years Euro team us not their best - it is their B or C team

Which is why to compare last year's anomaly with a top tier USA team playing a top tier Europe team is not fair. If this tem faced last year's Europe team it would be far worse.

The quality of play by the Americans , except for Hall, is not acceptable for pro status. I watch a lot of pro pool and the mistakes and misses made are really inexcusable. With the game in their hands they just dog.

So what are today's predictions? I think it's over in 3 sets Europe wins 11-6 and we can put this dog to bed for another year. Will be more like a mercy killing.

... When you are playing a short race and losing the first game a majority of the time, it just adds to the pressure. Losing the lag is huge. ...

That's logical, but:

- EUR has won 12 out of 14 lags.

- EUR has won the first game 9 out of those 12 times they won the lag.

- EUR won the match only 4 times out of the 9 times they won the first game.

- USA has won the first game 5 times; they lost all 5 of those matches.

- In total, the team that has won the first game has lost 10 of 14 matches.

Interesting --- I'll still play you a race to 5, you give me 1 on the wire and then I'll let you break.

No thanks.

With small numbers, as in just 14 matches so far, counter-intuitive (and counter the probabilities) results are, of course, quite possible.
