Mosconi Cup qualms

With Strickland off the US team (if it happens), I don't know who I'd cheer for. I usually cheer for the Euros, but with guys like Schmidt, Morris and SVB (if he's chosen), I can't NOT like the US squad. With Earl out, it would definitely be the most "gentlemenly" contested Mosconi Cup.

Shawn, with these guys you don't have any choice !

Ortmann is my favourite player of all time, so if he's on the team, I have to choose the Euros. The guy sent me autographed pictures from Germany on his own dime, because I told him I was a big fan. How can you not like that?

Oliver is definitively a gentleman ! I met him in a tournament last year. He's a great champion and first of all a big man.

I think that Stevie's play in major tournaments over the past couple of years warants him as a Mosconi Cub team member. He placed high in the US Open, World Ten Ball, BCA, Viking Championship, IPT events, and Derby City Banks and Nine Ball. He also tortured all of the regional stops he made as he has the last several years. You also have to remember that all the champions have regarded Stevie as a legitamate world beater for over ten years now and most of them will not play him even. After his world bar table title in the mid nineties he went on the road exclusively and I would say made the most of anyone for almost a decade.

Per our conversation with Luke Riches at Matchroom Sport last month on Runout Radio, Rodney, Johnny and Earl are already on team USA. The other players are yet to be determined.

The only player who is set for Team Europe is Konstantin Stepanov from Russia. And he is not completely assured of his spot.

Matchroom uses the Eurotour rankings for invitations to these events and Stepanov is at the top of the rankings right now.

The US players who are already in were all invited last year to play again this year.

Mike

shawn some nice posts but how can you play both 9-ball and 10-ball?

they're both the same game essentially. 10-ball is just a tweaked version of 9-ball. and while i love 14.1 as much as the next az'er, i don't really think it'd suit the mosconi cup. although maybe seeing runs made by two players would be interesting... wouldnt work for the mosconi though!

Mike

He is just 30 points ahead on Jonni Fulcher, 40 on Feijen, 55 on Petroni at this time. From that I know Matchroom will invite the #1 after the next Eurotour who will take place next week. Then the name of the first selectionned player will be known.

Note: the winner will take 630 pts, 2nd 510, 3rds 420, 5th 350, 9th 300... The head of the ranking is very closed... suspens.

Take a look on http://www.eurotour.nu

I don't think you'll see Earl go away for a long time in this event since Matchroom loves him for their ratings. The English folk taunting our snarling monster :)

I would bet on Nick van den Berg or Thomas Engert against Fabio Petroni!!! In one-pocket Fabio is the better player, but in 9-ball, 8-ball and 14-1 I would bet against him.

My favourite team for Team Europe: (If 5-man team)

- Ralf Souquet (Finish high in EVERY tournament he joins)
- Niels Feijen (He's on a roll this year, DCC, ICOC, EC 9-ball, and a class player)
- Thorsten Hohmann (Recently World Champion in 9-ball and 14-1, European 9-ball Champion this year)
- Konstantin Stepanov (The best, smooth style there is. Perfect pool)

Last player I think I would choose Mika Immonen. There are MANY players that could do aswell as him, such as David Alcaide, Thomas Engert, Oliver Ortmann, Marcus Chamat, Tony Drago, Nick van den Berg +++, but I would like to give Mika a chance of revenge after his unfortunate miss last year....

Btw: since matchroom sport chooses the teams, and the show is broadcasted live on skysport it is guaranteed that there will be at least one player from Great Britain. I think they will choose Daryl Peach, Imran Majid or Tony Drago. Daryl has won an eurotour this year, but Tony Drago would have topped the Eurotour-ranking if he had played all events like the other top-players!

Isn't Tony Drago from Malta? Or has he moved to the UK?

I like your picks, except I might sub Mike Davis for Jeremy. Mike is very motivated these days and playing well every time out.

I also wouldn't want Earl on the team. He is like a cancer. Sorry if I offended any one or two or three of you.
lmao,he said hes like cancer! tell us how you really feel jay:)

Mosconi Cup

Yeah, Ortmann is always a pleasure to watch. His experience and style are fun to watch. Stephenov would be a good addition.

Nick is certainly replaceable on the team, I just don't think he is that strong.
It is hard for me on Engert because he is a player I admire a lot, but 9 ball is not his game, 14.1 is.

I do agree though, having a variety of games played for the Mosconi Cup would be better suited for the competition.

I hope that SVB makes it. And it would be fun to see a Jesse Bowman or Stevie Moore play for us.

About Nick, I can't agree. He's a strong 9 ball player. I'm not 100% sure but i think he was 2 years in a row (2005 & 2006) ranked #1 on Eurotour circuit. Someone can certainly confirm it?

For you information Engert has 3 european titles in straight pool... and 4 in 9 ball ! And what about his performances in Eurotours, wich are 9 ball events. IMO straight pool AND 9 ball are his games. He's one of my favorites player too.

my europe team would be:
niels, has been playing great this year
darren appleton or daryl peach have both been doing very well in tournament and darren is going to win a big european tournament soon!!!
ralf, can't leave him out of the team!!!
thomas/oliver, tough choice between them...
stephanov deserves it this year, like david did last year
1 spot left? fabio/tony/nick or david...

can't make my mind up.. too difficult!!

don't think nick was nr 1 for 2 full years in a row...
he's been on the top for a few times now but not for 2 full years....

I would say he was ranked #1 2 years in a row at the end of the year, not 2 full years. It's different. ;)
