Mosconi Cup qualms

This is NOT going to be what you might have expected first off.

In my opinion, I think that Nick Van De Berg and Thomas Engert should be replaced on the European Mosconi Cup Team. They are okay, but JUST OKAY
for 9 ballers, and not what I would call a good 9 baller. I see some bad decisions on their part, and some 'goofed' execution too from them.

They might be name brands for European players, but I think they could draft better 9 ballers. Fabio Petroni might be a possible replacement.

What do you think?

You'd take Petroni over Engert? Engert is a decent 9-baller. He's won the world pool masters 3 times now. And, he's one of the most respected players in Germany. Nick van den Berg - I'll agree with you on him.

Here's my 5 for the Mosconi Cup Euro team - Souquet, Engert, Ortmann, Hohmann, Bustamante (he's lived in Germany for over 5 years - long enough to be considered a citizen). Hundal and Majid next in line.

Like Shawn Armstrong I can't understand the choice to take Petroni over Engert. Definitely Engert, is a level higher than Petroni! IMO Nick too, but he's younger and have less experience.

Shawn, Bustamante does'nt live anymore in Germany...

My team will be something like Feijen, Ortmann, Engert, Alcaide (or Majid) and Stepanov. I think it's nice to let a chance to the young players.

BTW, I really like to watch Dimitri Jungo playing at the mosconi cup. He was world 9 ball junior champion in 2000 and he's a great class player in all point of view. He's also the younger winner of an Eurotour event at the age of 17 in Russia (2000).

I didn't know he had moved. Thanks for the info.

I totally forgot about Feijen! Ooops.

My teams, if I had to pick today:

Europe - Souquet, Immonen, Engert, Ortmann, Hohmann, Feijen.
USA - Schmidt, SVB, Archer, Jones, Morris, Deuel.

Yes, I know - I left Strickland off.

About Europe, I think it's the best team we can have, But four Germans... it's a lot :D

And I want a format change, too. Play 9-ball, 10-ball and 14.1. You pick which players play what games.

Could you imagine the 14.1 game between Schmidt and Engert? 10-ball between Immonen and SVB? I think it would be a great format for the true pool fan.

Engert and Van De Berg are both STRONG players, and so is Fabio. You have to have Ralf and Thorsten on this team and Niels also. I like Oliver for his solid play and leadership. Add Mika and you have a super strong team.

I feel validated. Jay picked the same 6 as me. WooHoo................!

How about my American squad, Jay? Here's where I figure I will differ from most.

It's look like a dream team, but can the dream come true???

note : Mika can almost play for the US now ;)

I like your picks, except I might sub Mike Davis for Jeremy. Mike is very motivated these days and playing well every time out.

I also wouldn't want Earl on the team. He is like a cancer. Sorry if I offended any one or two or three of you.

It's too bad that the Mosconi Cup teams don't get voted on like the All Star teams for the NBA or MLB. Fans could log into a website and place their votes for the players they'd like to see represent which countries. Allow 4 of the 6 spots to be voted on, and the captain of the team gets to choose the last 2 members. This way, we'd get to see the players we really want to see play each other.

What about Gabe Owen, Jay?

I haven't seen much of him this past year. He made a lot of critical errors last year at the MC, so that's why I left him off.

Somehow I feel like I already have...........oops. Nothing against the rest of the Euro squad. If all of the strongest players in the US were from the same state, I'd send them. I want to see the two best TEAMS compete. No quotas in terms of all countries being rep'd. That's what the worlds are for.

I totally agree with you ! All that we want is good pool. Pool doesn't know boundaries. Personally, I never look at the nationality of a pool player but only his game, his caracter too. Mosconi cup is something special in pool, like the world cup of pool, but we've got to take it lightely without nationalism.
But I sure would be happy if my favorite team wins! JMO

With Strickland off the US team (if it happens), I don't know who I'd cheer for. I usually cheer for the Euros, but with guys like Schmidt, Morris and SVB (if he's chosen), I can't NOT like the US squad. With Earl out, it would definitely be the most "gentlemenly" contested Mosconi Cup.
