I just booked my flight and hotel for the Mosconi Cup. I tried the package deal from Southwest Airlines this time -- I usually book separately. I decided to stay at the Mandalay Bay for convenience.

If I subtract the cost of the flights from the package, it looks like I'm going to pay under $100/night for the room including taxes and the "Resort Fee" swindle. I checked the Luxor -- which is attached but about a 10 minute longer walk -- and it comes out at $75/night all included.
 
I did the package deal for the Open in April at the Luxor. Like you said, ended up being a real good deal. Might make it an annual thing with the better half

The walk is indoors and not that bad at all, besides you pass several places to eat along the way. Can't really go wrong with either place.

I asked the booking agent about the listed price and she said they would love to list the actual cost of the rooms but the hotels won't let them. Booking.com does list the total price including all taxes and fees fairly early into the booking process -- when you are selecting the room type.
 
I booked at Mandalay and for 7 nights with flight from St. Louis it was $1004.00 (not including the sham fee!)

I wished I would have bought my event tickets sooner though, Im at the top of sec 3.

Bob, I'll be staying less than a mile away (walking distance) from the Mandalay Bay at the Desert Rose Resort, a private condominium complex that rents out complete fully equipped condos. They are time shares that are not being used at the time. There is no parking fee and there is no resort fee! I am staying in a one bedroom condo with full kitchen, bathroom, two large screen TV's and all the bedding, towels, pots and pans, kitchenware included. There is a very nice pool area near our room as well. I can walk to the Tropicana or MGM in a few minutes. Mandalay Bay is probably a 15 minute walk.

The price for me (as a Veteran) is less than I would be paying at any strip hotel, just over $100 per night. My wife and dog are joining me there. We are on the ground floor so we can just walk outside to a nice yard area for my dog to relieve herself. Of course they offer you a free meal to attend a luncheon where they are selling Time Shares but you are not required to attend. I've stayed here about half a dozen times and never went to one of them. See you soon, Jay

P.S. There is no casino on the property! Not even one slot machine. I love that. And believe it or not, there is a pool table in the lounge area.

MB is a much nicer property than Luxor hands down. It’s the right plan. Luxor isn’t that far out of the way, it’s just not as nice of a joint to stay in.

The Resort Fee scam is the absolute worst move Vegas has ever made, they abuse the people in the casino and now rob them when they stay at the joints.

I mite be in town for mcup, never know when I’ll pop up.

Worse is the move to charge for parking. Real thievery. Is Venetian still free? That was the last main holdout I knew of.

For the US Open last April I chose Jay's plan and stayed at what looked like an apartment complex that had been turned into a hotel about three miles out Tropicana. I saved enough on the room to pay for meals and a car.

The problem was parking at Mandalay Bay, which is $15/day with no in/out privileges. The nearest free parking seems to be the Tropicana, but it is a brisk 20-minute walk to the tournament venue even if you use the Luxor/MB shuttle thingie. I caved and paid for parking after a day on the cheap.

My problem is that I remember the days when you got all sorts of great deals in LAS. Now I just feel ripped off when I'm not careful. Hints: Don't go to the Luxor buffet. Do try the Irish pub between the Luxor and MB in the walkway.
 
If at all possible go buy some groceries for your room. They rip you off blind out there on food.

Ri Ra is the Irish pub, great people. Also one at Trop in atlantic city, they are like family.

Which brings up another beef I have with the LAS casino hotels. They have no refrigerators, microwaves or coffee makers in the rooms. They have no interest in letting you avoid the double-priced minimum-service Starbucks downstairs. I like a hot cup of something to start me in the morning and before bed at night, but convenience is not part of their agenda.

If anyone is looking for a great deal on a room, let me know. My best friend reserved a 1500 square foot, 2 bedroom suite. If someone is looking for a room, he would sell it for a real good price (normally 2800+ for the 5 days)....just to basically make it worth him going out there. Would have to be someone I know and trust, cause the room would be in his name.....he got it comped, cause of the 100’s of thousands he has lost out there. :(:eek:

That too! I just didn’t put it on the list. I think treasure island is still a free park as well.

And as Bob pointed out the rooms with no fridge & microwave(that’s by design), back in the day when eating in Vegas was almost free who needed that? Now it’s a billion $’s for food there. At mcup couple years ago a can of Pepsi was $6 at MB do was water(I went into the players room and took a couple bottles).

The prices they charge are abusive.

I still have income property and one biz in Vegas but I only go there 2-3 times a year. Sometimes I fly in and out the same day. Handle my biz and bounce.

Customer service is a lost art in Vegas. I would think that a smart operator will come along and buy one of the large strip hotels and do away with the resort fee and parking charge. They will also provide amenities in the rooms like frigs, microwaves etc. They could charge a comparable room rate and grab a lot of business from the other strip hotels.

You can still get all this in some of the downtown hotels. I stayed in the El Cortez last time there - no parking fee, minimal resort fee ($20), inexpensive room and frig & microwave in my room. Plus there is a lot to do and see downtown now and it's an easy walk to everything.
 
I'm there. Figure 25 for a taxi or 12 for Lyft.
Small coffees are uniformly $4, Starbucks or food court.

The tournament room is downstairs this year so take the escalator down just after the Starbucks. You can also take the escalator down from near the food court.
 
Just a heads up for any of you that might be a veteran. If you get the Mlife card at Mandalay Bay or any Mgm property you get free parking.
