Mosconi Excuses

...It is not always about who won this tournament or that tournament but who brings the best and most contribution to the team. That is why Phil Mickleson was a Captain pick for Presidents Cup. Go do your home work please before you comment from ignorance

Actually, it is exactly about this.

Mickelson regularly finds himself pair with one of golf's greats even when he's not having his best year. He contends for and wins titles every single year and finds himself in high pressure situations regularly.

In pool, unless you are one of the few that makes deep runs in tournaments, you don't even get to play against the stars of the game, let alone beat them. In American pool, only a few have signature wins against the stars of the game. That's what makes them attractive as Mosocni Cup team members. The delusional few who think that Archer was in the kind of form that he should have even been considered needn't look further than the whitewashing he took 11-2 at the US Open from Ralf Souquet. With so few competitive matches against the elite in 2015, nobody should have been surprised by either this or Appleton's convincing 8-5 win over Archer at the World Pool Masters. Because of poor performance in tournaments, Johnny is not getting to match up against the stars of Europe very often and when he does, he is, understandably, not up to the challenge.

Of late, the Mosconi Cup is lost year after year because Team USA fails to win singles matches, going 3-7 this year. The only thing a player needs to bring to the table is the ability to take down some big names in singles, and in America, the list of those who have done so in recent memory is a short one indeed. Thankfully, this year's team was quite capable of competing with the stars of Europe in singles, getting to the hill in at least five of the ten singles matches (two double hill losses on day four).

You're right, it's not about bonding, it's about playing well, but now we've got a young nucleus of improving players, I think there is reason for optimism. As long as we keep "going young," we'll win this pretty soon and the pedigree of young American players will keep growing. If we ever "go old" again, I'll probably stop watching the Mosconi.

Nice job by Coach Wilson this year putting the right pieces in place for the future.

Well, those Urpeen players may think they're cool, but if our USA guys had played better, the results would have been different.

For what it's worth since you brought up his name Archer did win against skylar and Bergman the only time they played each other in tournaments this year and if the Tornado tournament he won was a Mosconi points qualifier who knows . Three years ago in London he won all six of his matches 6 points not sure if that has ever happened before. He undoubtably ha the best Mosconi record of all times. ( just for the record)

As CJ Wiley had once mentioned, he should be Coaching again.

See, CJ could sell each player one of his Touch of Inside Dvds and then personally work with them.

And if they allowed girls on the team, Mary Alvino could play. Or maybe she could teach them how to do Trick Shots.

Bar table wins don't count and the ones that carried Mosconi points shouldn't have. FYI, in 2013, Johnny contributed zero points and was the worst ever coach of Team USA.

That said, I agree that it's only a few years ago that Johnny was elite, and nobody questions that he's an all-time great, one of the best ever. The evidence in front of us, however, says he nearly never beats the most elite players on the big tables anymore.

Even if Team USA were to consist of ten players, I wouldn't put Archer on it if I were choosing.

Here is my assessment of the situation. America will never win another Mosconi Cup. Simple reason is their one guy versus our five. Say what? Actually pretty simple. Watch Shane, Justin, Sky, Corey and Mike. Five different stances. Five different strokes. Five different guys. Now watch Team Europe. One stance. One stroke. One attitude. The Europeans may not win head to head for the cheese all the time but they sure learned their fundamentals! We need pool schools. Starting from children all the way to professional skill level. Only then will America have a chance. Of course, JMHO.

Speaking of the Europeans. I will NEVER listen to "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" again. If I never hear it or the name Karl Boyes again I'll be happy. My ears are still ringing from the level of support the Europeans had in Vegas. Of course the fact I was assigned a seat right behind the European team didn't help. I nearly drowned in the incredible amount of alcohol drank by their supporters. The guy from Liverpool who sat next to me nearly broke the floor stomping with each shot made or team win. Not to mention the sheer volume of his chanting.

Oh well, on to next year. Hope to be in England to visit Lotus. Perhaps the trip will coincide with the Mosconi Cup. You never know! Don't know if I can drink warm beer though  ;) .

Very good point...maybe the US men are only good in international individual events not team events. Divided we stand; United we fall.

The performance in 2013 from the players would've made any captain look bad.
I remember commenting back then that Johnny needed spares...which they've never
had on a Mosconi team.
Johnny needed to be able to bench Hatch and Morris.

...no spares = no teeth

agreed - assess, advance, attack.

be glad you weren't sitting between me & FatAlbert, cause your head would have split! his voice resonates clear through into the casino & gives those Brits a damn good run for their money. and i stomp my cowboy boots till i've got shin-splints, plus, we can whistle.

hate we all missed you this year. and BTW, you suck - now i've got that damn English version stuck in my head! ;)

If you have ever been to Europe you know how close the countries are that produce the current crop of Mosconi players. These guys have been competing against each other for years and years and have developed frienships. It is one of the main reasons that they come to the Mosconi Cup as a tight team rooting for each other as a team.

The comment about their similar fundamentals is right on.

Jay made a great insightful comment when he asked "Do you notice how the American outs need the great shot to win as they find themselves out of line. While the Europeans always seem to have easier lines and easier outs,?"

How do you achieve what the Europeans and now the Taiwanese and the Chinese have already attained which is solid fundamentals, proper patterns, lock up safety's..

The closer we get to rock solid fundamentals, stance, alignment and cue going always through straight and we stay down (Nels Feijen is phenomenal staying down),

Our Captain needs have them meet regularly and spend time playing and analyzng the defects of their game and improving upon their fundamentals that seem somewhat weak, We may stretch 3,000 miles but we should be able set up 6 major camps for the competetions and instructional in various areas so no one is unduly inconvenienced. Organized with Goals.
